Today's Idaho Statesman reveals that Idaho Senator Larry Craig has missed 50 votes in the senate as he battles to rescind his guilty plea to a charge of disorderly conduct in a Minneapolis airport restroom.
Sen. Craig, when he announced his intent to resign, acknowledged that Idaho needs and deserves a senator who can give 100% of his attention to representing the people of Idaho in Congress.
A senate vote yesterday illustrates that the issue of the senator's tenure must be resolved quickly, as his absence from the senate floor yesterday may have cost the pro-life community an important victory.
According to Idaho Chooses Life, the senate yesterday defeated an amendment to the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) proposed by Sen. Wayne Allard, an amendment that would have required that the CHIP program continue to cover preborn children. Democrats are determined to remove that provision from the legislation.
The vote was 50-49, meaning that if Sen. Craig had been present, the vote would instead have been a tie, putting the tie-breaker in the hands of Vice-President Cheney who certainly would have voted for life.
