The Senate is facing a crucial Iraq war vote this week on legislation that requires that U.S. soldiers have as much downtime at home as they spend in Iraq. (Read more details.) A consequence of the legislation, analysts say, is that the current troop levels in Iraq would have to be decreased.

Below, Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), speaks about the legislation and reaches out for support:

Just today, GOP Sen. John Warner, one of the most important swing votes, claimed that he is reconsidering his support for Webb's amendment. Greg Sargent reports:

Just when it looked as if Senator Jim Webb's troop readiness bill might pick up enough GOP support to reach the magic number of 60 filibuster-proof votes, we're now getting word that Senator John Warner is reconsidering his backing for it and may vote against it.

So reports the Wall Street Journal in a subscription only article. In a bit of a cruel joke, here's the reason Warner is giving for not backing a measure that would give exhausted troops more rest:

...in an interview Tuesday, the senator said he is "reconsidering his position" in light of the administration's willingness to move closer to him on expediting some reduction in U.S. troop levels this year in Iraq. "It took a lot of convincing to make the first units come home before Christmas," Mr. Warner said. "There is a lot of importance in that."

Ok....time to bring our troops home. Make them stand in line. Beginning from the Bagdad airport through Iraq,Iran, to Afghanistan and if the line is still to long up to Turkmenistan and farther up to Utzpekistan. Let them stand in line while they board the airplanes home. You will save yourself a lot of money, because not many will board the planes. Congratulation.

Democrats Backing Down On Iraq -- For Now

The Democrats have signaled retreat once again on their push to abandon Iraq, deciding that they have to wait until next summer to regain momentum on timelines for withdrawal. Instead, they will focus on creating obstacles for the Pentagon in its efforts to maintain necessary troop levels, although that effort appears to be failing as well:

Unable to garner enough Republican support, Senate Democratic leaders said yesterday that they are abandoning a bipartisan effort to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq by next spring.
Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said that Democrats had been willing to make the troop withdrawal a "goal" in order to attract GOP support, but it never materialized. Instead, Reid will again push for a firm deadline, this time June 2008, along with a stronger effort at cutting off war funding. ...

I can understand the Repubs ability to not understand the concept of co-EQUAL, since they don't believe in equality of any sort, but have they no pride... ferchrissake they're complete toadies. Like lemmings they'd follow George off a cliff if he told them to. They make me think of the little toddlers you see sometimes being taken out for walks at daycare; each one follows the other and they're all attached to a rope so none of them gets out of place.

Why should the Democracts take an up or down vote on Iraq when they can get so much more PR mileage by pretending to support the troops.

And so, now we find out that the guy "sent over from central casting," (I believe that's how all the MSM gassbags characterized Warner when he announced he was retiring) is nothing more than another lyin' ass sack of shit who votes himself payraises while he sends other peoples' kids off to die in an obscene war.

How typical.

Why don't the Republicans support our troops?

Senator Webb needs to speak out more forcibly on Iraq. He lends a very authoritative voice to the debate.

All this thrashing around is total bullshit.

We must withdraw ALL of our people out of the Middle East and immediately.

There is no actual military reason for them to be on the ground there whatsoever.

These people want to control their own natural resources. Simple as that.

This obsolete 1947 foreign policy is the product of old white-haired men with aging disease and some lame fantasy of greed and control.

Iraq has fallen. Time to go.

Yes, the troops definitely deserve more time home. Bush can send in more Blackwater mercenaries to dodge the bullets. Since Blackwater's founder is such a good Christian, and since this is an oil war against Islam, making Blackwater fight it would be the Christian thing to do.

Yes, let the wealthy Christian mercenaries fight this war. Bring the kids home and give them a college education and whatever else needed to start a decent life.

Never trust Republican Lawmakers they all keep lying to the American public. Senator John Warner is no different. No matter what he says to the public, he will always support his Republican President George Bush. John Warner care less for our brave men and women, he will sacriface their precious lives. It is amazing these guys do not see what they are doing to the Iraqis and do not see what they are doing to our young men and women in Iraq. Their lives have no value. Do not hesitate to kill innocent people in Iraq. John Warner will write a book after getting out of the Senate, then will tell the truth and nothing but the truth. John Warner is a hypocrit number one.
