Defense Sec Gates: "I Don't Know" If Iraq War Was Right Thing To Do

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

ABC News:

It's been an article of faith for the Bush administration that the invasion of Iraq was the right thing to do.

However, the man now in charge of running that war said he is not sure.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates' stunningly candid answer came in an interview with New York Times columnist David Brooks.

Mostly we hear the press from their airconditioned offices or public that watch these things on Tv..Think about the pressures of a Military dictator and a World Criminal. The things will be righted ..

I think of US Russian relations like schoolboys think,,we made friends in classroom ,now we must make friends in playing field too before i allow you to use my bat . .

Priceless irony... the Secretary of Defense, admitting the obvious to Brooks, himself an ass-covering, smarmy, recovering cheerleader for the invasion.

You couldn't cut the hypocrisy with a jackhammer.

All the more reason to stay. Somehow logic and sense have escaped from this administration's hot air balloon.

Gates doesn't know if it was "right", Betrayus can't say it's made us "safer".

Hey, dumb-fucks, let me make it perfectly clear to you so-called experts and leaders in charge - it's been a complete cluster-fuck from beginning to now and the biggest failure and national disgrace this country has ever been involved in. Your continued support of this folly makes you war criminals and traitors of the highest degree no matter how much lip-stick you put on this pig.

My only prayer is that somehow and someday before I die I see all of you hanging from ropes and leaving you there till your bones fall to the ground for us to spit on.

I hope Gates is looking for new employment, because he's not going to be working for the White House much longer!

We believe no more in Bonaparte's fighting merely for the liberties of the seas, than in Great Britain's fighting for the liberties of mankind. The object is the same, to draw to themselves the power, the wealth, and the resources of other nations.

...Thomas Jefferson

Updated for our time two hundred plus years later:

We believe no more in Bush/Cheney's fighting merely for the liberties of Iraq, Afghanistan or Iran, than in Great Britain's fighting for the liberties of mankind. The object is the same, to draw to themselves the power, the wealth and the resources of other nations.

Jefferson, above all others, would hate the treason of the corporate fascists!

Lincoln, the First Republican would be standing next in line against the GOP!

Ike, the last honest Republican would be shaking his head, having warned US.

How can a 3 time college drop-out acidhead loser like myself be sooo right, and these Administration toads be sooo wrong?
The Republican Party is just the right wing of the single-party system we have to own up to as the fact of the matter. As long as AIPAC baits their detractors with cries of "Anti-Semite", and continues equating Israel/USA as a some sort of single democratic entity, and isn't sent packing from K Street and the halls of Congress, we are going to hear such mealy-mouthed opinions for a long, long, time. Zionism is a creepshow. Bright Israel-firsters playing the "Jesus come back soon" card to the dipshit fundies no person can be elected to the nation's highest office without. The plurality of hypocritical rural chicken-fuckers is the swing vote in national politics. Actually, i have no regrets about dropping out of the game. It's fucking rigged for the oil-garchs and mil/ind complex anyway....Satanists, if only by moral/ethical default. I miss my country. Where'd it go? Israel! Wake up already.

Here's a little FYI. It's "jewphobe" now, not "anti-semite". Semites include Arabs.

The trolls introduced this change yesterday.

Gates is just being diplomatic. He knows that this was a huge
neocon blunder and is doing his best to pull Dumbya's bacon
out of the fire, just like many of his dad's buddies have before.
11:29 AM on 09/20/2007
It's just more "Oh, gee, I'm sorry". Lovely.

If he really cared, his lack of support for the troops wouldn't be so glaring.

When it is all over the oil will return to the world markets no matter who controlls Iraq. That will not be profit making for the men who put Gates where he is.
These people are not loyal to the United States. They are pawns of international contractors. He is a bag of crap.
10:35 AM on 09/20/2007
Perhaps if he lost a child or had a brain dead one to nurse, even a just crippled one that could sit in a chair and drool perhaps eventually learn to feed itself, he would devleop some clarity.
Is oil and money that important?
What about the disgrace they have brought to the USA internationally?
It has been proven that the entire adventure was based upon LIES.
He is too wealthy to worry about paying in any way for the war, so that wouldn't matter to him or his.

Cheney's are even better? Especially now that al Sadr controls Baghdad. "The insurgency is in it's final throes."
