AP:

The Senate narrowly rejected legislation on Wednesday that would have given military detainees the right to protest their detention in federal court.

The 56-43 vote fell four shy of the 60 votes needed to cut off debate on the bill, co-sponsored by Sens. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., and Arlen Specter, R-Pa. It was a blow for human rights groups that say a current ban on habeas corpus petitions could lead to the indefinite detention of individuals wrongfully suspected of terrorism.

President Bush and conservative Republicans counter that the ban, enacted last year, was necessary to stem the tide of legal protests flooding civilian courts.

Your headline is wrong. There was no filibuster, only the threat of a filibuster.

Why don't the Democrats force the Republicans to actually filibuster, instead of caving in to the mere threat of a filibuster? Those SOBs are so old they wouldn't last a day and a half without giving it up. WHY SENATOR REID WHY WHY WHY! People are dying needlessly while you guys dither and fret. Make them actually filibuster and we'll see who blinks first...

It's the job of the Pres to defend the constitution - look it up - it's in the oath of office. The goon in office now hasn't defended it - he's trashed it. Anyone who can remember their high school civics class knows that.

If we can't honor and defend our constitution and defeat the terrorists - AT THE SAME TIME - then the bad guys have already won. The people in power have no clue about what it really means to be an American.

That's so tired. Nothing changed after 9/11. It just gave the right an excuse to use while they took advantage; and it gave the left an excuse to use while they gave up.

Hmmn. So 43 Republicans opposed to Habeus Corpus can kill it off in the Senate because "The 56-43 vote fell four shy of the 60 votes needed to cut off debate on the bill"?

So how many Senators opposed to the Iraq war would it take to kill off the Iraq war, by doing the same to any bill needed to fund it?

41. Not the 60 needed to shut off debate. Not the 67 or 68 needed to override a veto. 41, as willing to stand and be counted as against the war as these Republicans were willing to stand and be counted as against Habeus Corpus.

Hey, Harry--should be a piece of cake.

Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:

- 29 have been accused of spousal abuse
- 7 have been arrested for fraud
- 19 have been accused of writing bad checks
- 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
- 3 have done time for assault
- 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
- 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
- 8 have been arrested for shoplifting
- 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
- 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year

Can you guess which organization this is?

Give up yet?

It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.

Sanjong, how do you know this. This came to you in an email didn't it? We all got the same one. So now you are gaining information from some email someone sends around? If it is that easy give me your email address and I will send you lots of information!
Yep lots of crooks in congress. Far more republicans than democrats these days. This email is actually quite old so the numbers are probably off. That means you are spreading misinformation. Does it make you feel good to mislead people? Try actually thinking and delete all non personal email.

republicans are behaving in a short-sighted manner.

what slime!

just wait until one them needs the right of habeus corpus.

it's amazing to me that these fools think that their desire to refuse habeus corpus to prisoners in gitmo will not eventually extend to all citizens of this country.

oh, i know it all begins with citizens identified as non-combatant enemies. it won't be long after that that anyone who opposes this illegal occupation of iraq (or future invasions or illegal 'wars') will be classified as an enemy non-combatant. then it will be anyone who dissents at all...

huge detention centers filled with dissenters but no charges filed against any of them.

it could happen.

So you would take the route of cowards and destroy America in order to defend it. America is its Constitution and laws. You would destroy them. You would do what the terrorists want. You clearly think laws and values are the folly of others and want the USA to run and hide and become something other than what the founding fathers intended. You're saying following the law we cannot defeat the terrorists, We must become the enemy to defeat them. No thanks.

The tide of legal protests... wow... incredible how we, as a nation have regressed to the irrational demands of an out of control freak.

There will be plenty of civilian court AND international court flooding along with legal protests flooding once his dictatorship is over.

Wake me up from this nightmare... Please?
