I Like ItI Don’t Like It

As Congress considers a series of bills that would drastically alter the course of the Iraq war, one prominent Republican senator will be focusing his efforts on condemning a newspaper advertisement.

The Huffington Post has learned that Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX, will introduce a sense of the Senate resolution Thursday criticizing MoveOn.org's recent advertisement in the New York Times. The ad called into question the credibility of Lt. General David Petraeus, suggesting the pseudonym "Betray Us."

Cornyn's amendment proclaims that the general "deserves the full support of the Senate." The MoveOn advertisement, Cornyn's legislation states, not only "impugns the honor and integrity of General Petraeus," but "all the members of the United State Armed forces."

Perhaps in hopes of gaining support for his amendment, Cornyn's measure would also "reaffirm support for all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces."

Cornyn's bill comes on the heels of a GOP filibuster of an amendment, put forth by Sen. Jim Webb, D-VA, requiring that troops be given the same amount of time at home as they spend deployed abroad. A call to Cornyn's office to determine whether a vote against his measure would be regarded as a vote against the troops went unanswered.

Read the text of the amendment here.

Has freedom of speech been revoked and I missed it?

Between this, the kid being tased at Univ of Fl and Rev. Lennox Yearwood being tackled by the Capitol Police outside the Patraeus hearings for wanting to enter wearing a pin saying "I love the Iraqi People", I am beginning to wonder.

BTW, what is it those Republican politicians drink (smoke?) to make them so wacky?

The only appropriate response is to send more money to MoveOn - after sending mail to this Bush-lickin' Senator from Texas.

A nice thing with MoveOn is that one can contribute to specific campaigns they have. One doesn't have to agree with everything they do. Just fund them for the issues that you do agree with.

Kill the messenger! Quick!

MoveOn speaks for a majority of Americans.

Shining integrity of our congress, oozes from the cloak room, both parties. This war (all war) is wrong, the general is a lackey were is the argument. Those who feel the war is right must feel the general is telling the truth and support him no matter what, lemmings over the cliffs.

It makes sense that the Senator is from Texas, kind of like the good old boys, coming to the rescue, without the sheets covering their heads.

The day it becomes inappropriate to criticize our military leaders, it would be all over. America would have entered full fledged fascism.

And there is no requirement that free speech be polite. In fact, it is more often impolite and unpopular speech that is effective and requires more protection.

MoveOn should be encouraged and rewarded for what they did. I am hopeful that they would continue to provide the much needed leadership against fascists.

Dems should introduce a resolution criticizing Coulter, Limbaugh, etc., quoting some of their worst statements.

OR they should introduce a resolution conedemning governmental infringements, or even threats, that could have a chilling effect on the First Amendment.

good points, so what is good for the goose is not good for the chicken hawk, or should it be the other way around? Bush has said he does not care what the polls say, Congress should be protecting our rights, but we get pablem, pandering and more status quo.

Coulter isn't worth it. She makes a fool of herself every time she opens her mouth. Best to let her hang herself with her own rope.

MoveOn is a real threat to the GOP because they speak the truth and represent the majority of Americans. This latest behavior by the GOP confirms it.

We still have first amendment rights and our freedom of speech. I guess the repugs forgot that. My second problem with all this is, that we have men and woman dieing each day over in Iraq and all the repugs want to talk about is this damn ad. Why don't the repugs start talking about something more important

I have been thinking about this since last night and I just don't understand.

Are republicans members of a god like troop. Are they supposed to be America's royal, ruling class.

Every time some one tells the truth about one of them, if it is negative, the other republicans go ape. (Pun intended)

But they call the democrats such names as traitors, commies, treasonist and even demoncrats. They post lies about real heroes. And they fine that OK. Again I suppose there are two different rules in this country one for the republicans and one against the democrats.

Why doesn't Senator Cornhole just cut to the chase and introduce legislation that would repeal the First Amendment? It's clear at this point that the Republicans have nothing. Nothing!

The same Republican hypocrites have continuously screwed the troops, and after yesterday's vote against Webb's amendment, continue to do so.

Dumber 'n' Dirt Cornyn stricks again. It's pretty amazing how the NeoCons pick out a person (Petraeus) and make him appear as dumb as they are. Petraeus can speak for himself idiot John. What I want to know is "Why does Blackwater have to protect this smart, supposely fighting machine General"?? Hell, he should be able to protect himself, or at least our troops should be given that cushy job instead of Blackwater. Wonder if Petraeus doesn't trust our troops....what's up with that Senator Cornyn??

Wonder why Sen. Cornyn does not call out Admiral William Fallon, Petraeus's superior, for calling Petreaus a sycophant during their first meeting in Baghdad. Then Fallon went on to say he considered Petraeus to be "an ass-kissing little chickenshit" and added, I hate people like that. Just wondering.
