I Like ItI Don’t Like It

As Congress considers a series of bills that would drastically alter the course of the Iraq war, one prominent Republican senator will be focusing his efforts on condemning a newspaper advertisement.

The Huffington Post has learned that Sen. John Cornyn, R-TX, will introduce a sense of the Senate resolution Thursday criticizing MoveOn.org's recent advertisement in the New York Times. The ad called into question the credibility of Lt. General David Petraeus, suggesting the pseudonym "Betray Us."

Cornyn's amendment proclaims that the general "deserves the full support of the Senate." The MoveOn advertisement, Cornyn's legislation states, not only "impugns the honor and integrity of General Petraeus," but "all the members of the United State Armed forces."

Perhaps in hopes of gaining support for his amendment, Cornyn's measure would also "reaffirm support for all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces."

Cornyn's bill comes on the heels of a GOP filibuster of an amendment, put forth by Sen. Jim Webb, D-VA, requiring that troops be given the same amount of time at home as they spend deployed abroad. A call to Cornyn's office to determine whether a vote against his measure would be regarded as a vote against the troops went unanswered.

Read the text of the amendment here.

Instead of playing right into the Republican's hand, by either rejecting or endorsing the resolution, the Democrats should simply add an amendment that condemns John Boehner (R-Ohio) for saying the killing of American soldiers is "trivial." Those Republicans will run like scalded dogs.

I got it! The debate on this disgusting resolution should go like this:
A Repug rants
A Dem reads the 1st Admendment word for word (nothing else)
Then another repug rants
Then next dem again reads word for word the first amendment - and so on.
We can watch the repugs rant and flop around like fish on a boat deck, while the dems smile and keep repeating the 1st amendment. It would be great.

You can't fight with someone that wont argue. We have the constitution on our side

It just depressing that Junior John Cornyn is 'representing' Texas. My thoughts at Stop Cornyn...

I am amazed at the paltry amount of self-awareness the Republicans have.

Isn't it just like the Republicans to want a resolution denouncing free speech? Why not? They've successfully eliminated Habeas Corpus, the Geneva Conventions, and our right to privacy, so I have no doubt they'll get their way with the MoveOne Resolution.

It seems MoveOn really hit a sore spot with the right. At least MoveOn has the spine to call them out... unlike the Democrats.

I'll bet Move On folks are staying up at night wringing their hands over this forthcoming censure of the most grievous kind from this patriotic Senator.

Sorry, Senator Durbin tried that logic today on the floor of the Senate and rightly got bitch-slapped for it. Here is the problem with his/your argument.

First - one posit is made in the middle of a hard-nosed political campaign for President. The other is made against a career military officer with no political aspirations.

Second - the Swift Boat claims were made by Medal of Honor winners and every one of Senator Kerry's commanding officers. Seems they would know the man. The MoveOn.org people have no such chops to make their claims.

Third - all of Senator Kerry's assertions could/would be proven if he would authorize the release of all his military records. He pulled a con job a couple of years ago by signing a release of his military records, but only certain ones.

Let's all call on Senator Kerry to authorize release of all of his military records so he can restore his good name.

I'm not going to spend time debunking your position except to say that there is ample evidence to suggest that Lt. General David Petraeus actually does have political ambitions. It is just not much reported in the mainstream US press.

B.S. How about Max Cleland? I don't buy the crap that because you are a General you are untouchable. Particularly a General. If you don't know how to play politics you never get past Captain, so there goes your argument. To bad Durbin couldn't react in time to make the argument if what you say is true.

One more thing, republicans didn't care much about terminating a few military careers and discrediting a few Generals if they didn't go along and parrot the republican talking points.

Senator Kerry's name needs no restoration--thanks. Can't say the same for the Swiftboaters, their supporters, and the look-the-other-way Chickenhawk Party who are responsible for one of the slimiest, low-down smear campaigns in political memory.

The fact is John Kerry was awarded medals while the Swiftboater's chickenhawk candidate was home hiding in Daddy's pampers, and they denigrated wartime honors during wartime--at the very time Americans were being decorated while being sent into harm's way, they had to witness one of their own get baselessly smeared for it by people like you.

Your sense that John Kerry needs to "prove assertions"--while being uninterested in the Swiftboaters proving any of their initial ones beyond "they should know the man"--is a joke.

All the Dems should stand up and read in unison the Constitution, with emphasis on the Free Speech Amendment to Cornryn and then laugh out loud. Once again the hypocritical Repugs miss the point. They can slam anyone they want, but if they get the same treatment they are all atwitter--sign of a whimpy coward. They let our military die in an illegal war, empty our treasury, profit from war, shred our Constitution, but can't handle the truth. The light of truth is too bright and they have to recoil---sounds like vampires. Happy that MoveOn is getting so much great publicity---they are hitting the Repug. nerve---right on. According to Lakoff, MoveOn is framing the issue perfectly.
