Dan Rather, whose career at CBS News ground to an inglorious end 15 months ago over his role in an unsubstantiated report questioning President Bush's Vietnam-era National Guard service, filed a $70 million lawsuit this afternoon against the network, its corporate parent and three of his former superiors.

Mr. Rather, 75, asserts that the network violated his contract by giving him insufficient airtime on "60 Minutes" after forcing him to step down as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" in March 2005. He also contends that the network committed fraud by commissioning a "biased" and incomplete investigation of the flawed Guard broadcast and, in the process, "seriously damaged his reputation." As plaintiffs, the suit names CBS and its chief executive, Leslie Moonves; Viacom and its chief executive, Sumner Redstone; and Andrew Heyward, the former president of CBS News.

"Mission Accomplished"

I now fade back into obscurity (at my undisclosed located).

I quickly tire of the bleat of the sheep. -
"Prove he's a deserter, with FACTS!" - facts that would only be available IF bush would release his service record, which he hasn't done, and we all know why.

Faked uranium documents from Niger used to get us into a war - O.K.

Possibly faked documents used to criticise the president - Horror!

The president is a deserter - yawn.

Rather didn't "vet" his story properly - Horror!

I wish I were religious, so that I could say "God help us", and mean it.

And the country circles the bowl (like NASCAR).

CBS & Dan Rather were either too lazy, to stupid or too paritisan to vett the story properly. (I beleive the latter). Therefore are no longer (if ever) a credible news source.
Whine on Danny boy ....

And the fact that the story was not properly "vetted" makes the fact that bush was, and is, a deserter, less important because.....?

Because there are no facts. Why did not any of the fabled lib investigators come up with it? Answer , same reason Al Gore never ever won a single recount per every legit news organization .

Oh well Exeye (I'm just getting ahead of the curve, here), PROVE he was a deserter! Huh? How about that?

O.K., I will. He can't PROVE he served honorably. He can't PROVE he served when he was supposed to and where he was supposed to. Since I am a vet, and know, and have known A LOT of other vets, I feel quite comfortable in reporting that NOT ONE other vet has had that problem, that I know of. Files have been misplaced, records lost, but ultimately, they are found, duplicates replace the lost files, but only if the veteran involved WANTS them to be. Apparently, our deserter-in-chief, doesn't WANT his sterling service record found, or I think it would have been by now, considering he's the president and all. I mean, if someone trying to get disability, cause he's broke and injured due to his/her service, can do it, then why can't a sitting president?

Only one answer I can think of.

And (because of people like you) the country circles the bowl.

nosuchperson posted an excellent link to the IBM archive. Consulting p. 1 of that archive, IBM stays it developed proportional spacing and the so called Executive typewriter in the 1940's. Also claims that proportionally spaced type is easier to read.

I'm not sure of that, but I am sure that letters with serifs are easier to read, the eye can distinguish characters more easily.

My bet is the Col Blimp or whoever it was who was covering for Bush did have and IBM Executive typewriter. Higher ups in organizations tended to have them & use them as status symbols.

Secretaries who had to use them tended to type relatively slowly so as to avoid typos which were very difficult to correct.

He should sue the SOBs. He was Roved. You know - the bit where he is given a document which is shown to be a forgery but contains the truth. A document prepared by unknown Rove agents. The media does exactly as Rove predicts by ignoring the truth of the statements in the document and focusing instead on the document itself as being a forgery. The statements in the document Rather used were absolutely true. Bush was AWOL. But the media lapdogs ignored that and went after Rather in order to pander to the White House. Well I say I hope Rather collects ever dime he is asking for.

PROVE Rove was involved. AND if HE was it only PROVES that CBS / Rather was SO hungry to destroy the President they went ahead and used a forged document either knowingly or if unkowingly.
If unkwoningly they VIOLATED a reporters basic rule of independanly verifying information.

Prove Rove was involved? According to this administration, you can't even prove Rove EXISTS.

And, in spite of your well-balanced opinion about the reason for the report, perhaps, just perhaps, Rather was attempting to get back to reporting some REAL news, instead of parroting the talking points issued by the Grey House.

You may be too young to remember, but newscasters USED to run stories critical of politicians all the time. It's true! They really did! AND they criticised BOTH sides. Honest! Of course, that was before questioning "the powers that be" led to a charge of being a traitorous, terrorist loving, anti-American Liberal, who wanted America to lose and our troops to die.

Thank goodness that this administration has stopped us from having to hear inconvenient facts, or the truth, since that would just muddle up all that brainwashing they had to work so hard to implement. And thank goodness we are STILL led by our deserter commander-in-chief, cause we don't want none of that "military expertise" mucking up our fearless leaders plans for free oil, er..I mean a free world.

And the country circles the bowl.

SUBPOENA BUSH'S UNEDITED, UNEXPURGATED, UNDOCTORED MILITARY SERVICE RECORD. CBS should hae done this when the matter came to the fore. That they shitcanned rather before looking into the matter thoroughly reeks of interference by a 3rd party (bushco perhaps) I'm not saying Dan Rather might not have a liberal bias, but even that looks tame compared to an entire network built on spewing GOP dogma. A very enlightening thread... all the wingnut trollies obsessed, to the point of flop-sweat, with that single controversial document, the money angle -- the usual array of talking points -- furiously nibbling around the edges of the issue like frantic rodents, bleating "libruls" the whole way...

But not one -- not a SINGLE fucking one -- has posted so much as a shred of documentation REFUTING the underlying truth of the original Rather report.

... which helps to explain why, as the criminal Iraq debacle falls like a house of cards, this dwindling crust of morons continues to cheer the occupation in tight formation, their soiled matching leotards torn from the effort of jumping up and down and waving their stubby little arms.

The rest of us know that, as in most of his vapid history, Junior got through this one like he had an EZ-Pass riveted to his ass.

Can't wait for the discovery phase... all those irrefutable facts out there, clamoring to be lined up and displayed in evidence, well beyond the reach of Georgie's spinmeisters and a lazy, stenographic press -- at long last.

You know, if you continue to insist on seeing the overall picture, instead of cherry-picking the points you want, and then building a media blitz around that, you're never going to get rid of that "Liberal Poster" tag.

As an Imus fan, I am enjoying this thoroughly. I want CBS to fail. The story behind this is payback to Moonves by Rather. Karma's a bitch and all Moonves' skeletens are going to come out in court..if this ever sees a court room. Moonves dumped Dan to bring in Couric which was really smart. He fired Don Imus and basically ruined CBS Radio. Moonves has a massive ego and it's time to deflate it.

There never was a "Liberal Media". Reporting facts does not, in spite of what the White House says, make you a "Liberal"

The MSM is dead, they just haven't held the funeral yet.

Reports are just NOW coming out, done BY the MSM that they were, indeed biased in their reporting in 2000 and 2004, repeating the repub lies, and never questioning the repubs on anything.

This occurred, in part, because these men could see the "Murdochization" of the news media, and knew that to maintain their careers, they must needs ditch the "Liberal" tag, even if it meant ignoring the truth in favor of 10 second "sound bytes" that the repubs were better at producing, since no thought or depth was required for same.

Also, in part, it occurred because news divisions were turned from "loss leaders" meant to be a public service, into "for profit" shows, subject to the same ratings pressures as Seinfeld or South Park. Thus we see 24-hour coverage of OJ (again), instead of in-depth reporting on the real news.

The "substance" of the Rather report was NEVER questioned. They "threw the baby out with the bathwater", in another attempt to avoid being labeled "Liberal".

Well, congratulations MSM, you got, and kept elected a deserter as commander-in-chief, and we, indeed "got the government we deserved".

My hope is more will get thier news from various sources, including the internet, and stop relying on ONE source for thier information. But of course, that requires time and effort, and we can't expect citizens to do thier duty and stay informed, form thier OWN opinions, and vote intelligently, can we?

(Posting from an undisclosed location, yet still have MY service records)

Spot on!

All the BS about how the story came to light
while ignoring the information contained
in the story.

It amazes me the focus is on Dan Rather
and not the Commander in Chief's
phoney service record.

But it will be America that suffers in
the end, not the media.

America is being destroyed by the lies
people have chosen to believe.

And the greatest weapon the GOP has right now
is the wide-spread belief in something
called the "liberal media" which
has NEVER existed.

The fact that the NYTimes comes up right away
as an example of "liberal" just illustrates
how absurd the contention is.

Judy Miller anyone?

I've also been wondering who it was that got fired for repeating the "Gore said he invented the internet" lie, that has been PROVEN false. And who has been fired for talking about the "Swiftboat" accusations as if they were true, when they had been PROVEN false.

MY thoughts about the "forged" documents in the Rather report are that, possibly, someone of true heart, copied these documents on a modern machine, just to preserve them for posterity, before the originals were shredded, pulped, burned, and the ashes scattered to the four winds.

If I "forge" a copy of my own birth certificate, yet keep all the data the same, does the fact that the document is not an original void the details of my birth? Hope not, cause there are some who would give that one a try.

And where is Bush's DD214? I needed mine to prove my veteran status. Also service records are not just kept at the base where you, allegedly, served, but in D.C., where fortunate floods, and convenient fires have yet to destroy ONLY the records of prominent politicians.

From Dan Rather to Puff-Piece Katie Couric will give you some idea of how dumb the CBS-Clown-Execs are. Rather is, and has been, one of the best and smartest MSM journalist/anchors this nation has ever had, and he was manuevered out of his position by the Bush-lickers who now dominate Corporate TV. Good for Dan! I wish him every success and I hope CBS has to pay through their piggy little noses--and pay, and pay, and PAY!
