Romney To Attack Gay Marriage In Radio Ad

First Posted: 03/28/08 03:45 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 01:15 PM ET

AP:

GOP contender Mitt Romney is launching a radio ad today touting his opposition to gay marriage.

Romney, who has been hit by conservatives for being soft on gay issues in the past, says he is the only major GOP candidate backing a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

"Not all Republican candidates agree, but defending marriage is the right thing to do," Romney says in the 60-second spot, targeting Iowa's evangelical Christians and meant to set him apart from Fred Thompson, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani in the Iowa caucus race.

Typical Mittler.

Uses gays to step up and then steps on them.

"Mr. Romney’s standing among conservatives is being hurt by a letter he sent to the Log Cabin Club of Massachusetts saying that he would be a stronger advocate for gay rights than Senator Edward M. Kennedy, his opponent in a Senate race, in a position that stands in contrast to his current role as a champion of a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

“We must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern,†Mr. Romney wrote in a detailed plea for the support of the club, a gay Republican organization.

The circulation of the letter by gay rights groups in recent weeks has set off a storm of outrage among social conservatives, and by Friday was looming as a serious complication to Mr. Romney’s hopes.

Aides to Mr. Romney, who did not dispute the letter’s legitimacy, said that the governor’s opinions on gay issues had not changed."

"Romney's '94 remarks on same-sex marriage could haunt him
By Scott Helman, Globe Staff | December 8, 2006

Comments Governor Mitt Romney made during his 1994 Senate bid, in which he said the gay and lesbian community "needs more support from the Republican Party," resurfaced yesterday, posing a potential hurdle as he appeals to conservatives for a probable presidential campaign.
republished excerpts from an August 1994 interview the paper did with Romney during his campaign against Senator Edward M. Kennedy. In the interview, Romney said it should be up to states to decide whether to allow same-sex marriage and he criticized Republican "extremists" who imposed their positions on the party.

"People of integrity don't force their beliefs on others, they make sure that others can live by different beliefs they may have," Romney is quoted as saying."

Romney certainly has the right to be against gay marriage, and so he shouldn't marry a man. Otherwise it's none of his damn business. If he wants a theocracy he should live in Iran. Now he wants to integrate hate into our Constitution? Haven't the Republicans done enough to destroy it? How long is America going to allow this crap? Enough already with the Anti-Christ Christian right!

Pandering to the whacked out social conservative religious wing nuts of the GOP--again. The irony of it all is that these snake handlers want no part of Romney because of his Mormonism.

If Romney is the GOP's standard bearer, polling shows he even loses Alabama to Clinton! Alabama!

Romney might have had some interest as a national candidate because he was the Governor of Massachusetts. But this begging and pleading to the worst element of the GOP makes him look pathetic and like a total loser. The revival tent Republicans will never support him.

Kerry may have been labeled a flip-flopper in the 2004 campaign, but ROMNEY has turned it into an ART FORM.

Doesn't he realize if he DOES become the nominee, the DEMS (I HOPE) will be able to make a Compilation of Romney's Greatest Flip-Flops.

It will be hilarious - and ALL true.

He was for gay marriage before he was against it - LMAO

Good for him. There is nothing honorable about gay marriage. There is nothing respectable about deviant perverted psychologically impaired behavior.

No matter how much the perverts want acceptance they will never get it, nor will they get civil rights protection via affirmative action.

Why does the Democratic Party go out of its way to pander to any undesirables? Who is next to include in the over expansive “umbrella Child Molesters maybe?

Wig: "Pander to undesirables?" What medieval cave did you emerge from? That is just more of the right's hate-filled, sheepish bigotry. Your flock are the psychologically perverted deviants. Sorry about your upbringing. You lost out.

Willard Romney is a poozer. What are the odds -- odds being what they are, and Republicans being what they are -- that at least one of his five sons is a deeply closeted homosexual?
