Associated Press:

The Senate blocked legislation Wednesday that would have regulated the amount of time troops spent in combat, a blow for Democrats struggling to challenge President Bush's Iraq policies.

The 56-44 vote was four votes short of reaching the 60 needed to cut off debate. It was the second time in as many months that the bill, sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., was sidetracked. In July, a similar measure fell four votes short of advancing.

According to the news on the radio, "the Democrats failed to pass legislation to help the troops." And we're talking regular radio, not some right-wing station.

Huh? That is twisted.

We read this in The Politico today

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) traveled to New York on Monday and huddled with leaders of the anti-Iraq-war movement, his latest effort to reassure this increasingly restive group that Democrats are doing everything they can to end the war. . . . Impatience rising, some activists are urging that Democrats who are not aggressive enough in confronting Bush on Iraq themselves be challenged with primary opponents or third-party candidacies in 2008. “People are feeling like we invested all this time and money in changing the political equation and where has it led us?” said former congressman Tom Andrews, leader of Win Without War. . . . Andrews, antiwar activist Tom Hayden, Code Pink’s Dana Balicki, and Leslie Cagan, director of United for Peace and Justice, a coalition of antiwar groups, said there is open talk of third-party challenges from the Left . . .

This morning we read from the Associated Press:

After weeks of suggesting Democrats would temper their approach to Iraq legislation in a bid to attract more Republicans, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid declared abruptly Tuesday that he had no plans to do so. The Democratic leader said he will call for a vote this month on several antiwar proposals, including one by Senator Carl Levin that would insist President Bush end U.S. combat next summer. The proposals would be mandatory and not leave Bush wiggle room, said Reid, D-Nev. “There (are) no goals. It’s all definite time lines,” he told reporters of the planned legislation. . . . Democrats are in a box on the Iraq war debate, lacking the votes to pass legislation ordering troops home, but tied to a support base that wants nothing less

When MoveOn.org says jump, the Democratic Party asks, “How high?” There should be, and eventually there will be, a political price to pay for this ugly alliance.

Thanks POWERLINE

Everyone knows it's not like fighting in a real war. There's lots of down time squatting in the nicest houses in the neighborhood. The ones where they throw the legal residents out on their ass. Then walk around acting all cocky and stupid. Handing out a few dollars here. Intimidating unarmed civilians there.

This isn't a war it's an occupation with some sporadic querilla resistance. These guys can stay over there forever as far as I'm concerned. They enlisted. No one twisted their arms. And most of them love it. It takes a certain type to want to kill others for glory. They'll be fine.

These guys don't really even understand their just their to act as targets for "terrorists" so the government can justify the fake "war".

Wow you sound just like john kerry. And weren't you just berating me on how I "don't even fucking care about the troops!"

I believe it was kerry who called our troops terrorist for going in to houses in the dark of night and terrorizing women and childern.

Of course my fave is murtha. Calling the Haditha Marines cold blooded killers before any facts came out. Real nice to speak so ill of the troops you supposedly support. Of course now that the charges are being thrown out he is silent with no appologies coming any time soon.

You, andyboy, are the one who doesn't make any kind of sense and are full of lies (or would that be dailykos/moveon.org talking points.)

So our troops are dying in Iraq to bring the blessings of democracy to th region, eh? At what point did democracy become 'minority rule' in THIS country? This is a damned outrage.

Can't get our troops out of Iraq....can't even get them adequate rest time at home...Bush needs them there because there ARE no replacement troops available. It's almost like Bush and the Republicans are holding our military hostage in order to enact their oil-grab policy in Iraq, isn't it?? And we can't do a thing to help our military.

"Get us our oil--and we'll let them go!"

Repukes have officially painted themselves in a corner. They can never again claim about caring about the troops.

I think you're totally wrong - they care enough about them to have them killed in a fiasco begun by their party and continued by their party. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for the Republican Party...or something like that.

So when are the Democrats going to stand up to the Republics and force them to filibuster these bills. Their acquiescence to the Republics is getting embarrassing. If the Republics want to filibuster a bill, they should be forced to stand there and read the phone book forever. This will show the world how the Republics are obstructing the will of the nation.

These Republic Senators seem to think that Bush and Betrayus gave them cover. Too bad they haven't read the recent polls that show that they changed the minds of no one. The public still wants our troops brought home by a very large majority. Oh well, these Republics will pay in the voting booth in 2008.

I don't get it. The democrats are putting illegal alien amnesty into other bills to try to sneak them in through a back door but they can't do the same thing with Iraq war bills.
