Conservative French President Sarkozy Probed Over Shady Apartment Deal
AP:
French prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into whether President Nicolas Sarkozy received a substantial discount when he purchased an apartment in a rich suburb of Paris when he was mayor in 1997, judicial officials said Wednesday.
During Sarkozy's presidential campaign in February, the weekly Le Canard Enchaine newspaper reported that Sarkozy and his wife, Cecilia, bought a six-bedroom duplex in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1997 at a hefty discount, and a developer did remodeling work for free.
The newspaper said the Sarkozys saved at least $416,000 on the apartment.
