Presidential hopeful and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is claiming that he deliberately sat out a vote mounted by Senate Republicans to condemn the group MoveOn.org. Obama said that he was taking the high road by staying out of the GOP-driven fray over the group's "General Betray Us?" advertisement.

"The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not on criticizing newspaper advertisements," the senator said in a statement e-mailed to the Huffington Post. "This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. ... By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics."

Obama and Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) both missed the vote on a resolution sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) to condemn MoveOn for its advertisement last week that criticized Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of US forces in Iraq. The ad has been the focus of Republican attacks on Democrats in Congress for the past week.

The measure passed on a 72-25 vote. Obama had earlier voted in favor of an alternative motion sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) that criticized actions that question the honor of armed services members generally, and highlighted partisan attacks against former senator Max Cleland and Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), both Vietnam veterans. The Boxer measure failed to advance.

The Huffington Post is still awaiting a reply from Biden's office on how he would have voted on the measure if he had attended the vote.

Obama's main rival on the campaign trail, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), voted against the Cornyn measure. Her vote drew fire from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor accused Clinton in a statement of siding "with the libelous left wing of her party."

Romney said, "The idea that she would be a credible commander-in-chief of our armed forces requires the willing suspension of disbelief."

Another Democratic presidential hopeful, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), also voted against the Cornyn measure, but he seemed to share some of Obama's sentiment.

"It is a sad day in the Senate when we spend hours debating an ad while our young people are dying in Iraq," Dodd said. "Now that the Senate has twice voted on this ad, it is time to move on and vote to end the war."

MoveOn may eventually thank Congress for the vote condeming the Petraeus ad.

I had never donated to MoveOn, however since the Senate vote I dropped a check in the mail to them last night. I wonder how many donations to MoveOn the Senate generated by their resolution?

MoveOn, keep on busting GOP balls! KICK ASS!

The resolution is without meaning. The vote is without meaning. The vote was a waste of time.
The ad was not a "personal attack". It was a professional analysis.

I can't get over the fact, not one Democratic Senator stood up to investigate massive voter fraud in 2000. Fraud that denied the right of 76,000 of the most loyal (95% dem voters for nearly 40 years). I guess they sold us out along time ago.

We don't need anymore "moderate right leaning" Dems. Either you are a liberal and proud to say you are, or get the fuck out of the party. I think all of the so-called new dems voted for this and yes for the wiretapping bill. We have to get rid of these people.

I think Obama was right not to showup for a freaking bill, the dems should not let out of committee in the first place! Maybe by not showing up he was telling the dems how spineless of them, to let a worthless peice of crap bill, come to the floor. The shit bill was not worth voting on! You just don't vote for shit!!!!

Yup, I think Moveon has made itself radioactive material when it comes to politicians. Their Betray-us ad, PRE his testimony was probably a little to much. I understand why they did it, and I know that they read and heard the reports that his report was going to be 'edited' by the white house before he read it, but they should have waited until after he actually read it. Now they've positioned themselves as professional village idiots.
Which is a shame because they have, or had , a lot of support, backing and influence. But now, every candidate and people who arent hard core democrats that never question anything done in the name of the democratic party and stamp on anyone who questions what they say { like those at democracyunderground.com ]. Its going to take a little but of smoothing over before I think Move on Org will be back in fair standing with most of those who want to support democrats.

Congress may have an 11% approval rating among individual U. S. citizens, but if their largest corporate campaign contributors were given truth serum and told to vote, the approval rate would easily exceed 90%.

Members of Congress (with very few exceptions) are no longer concerned with the views of those who directly vote for them (although this can be manipulated), but rather satisfying those who bankroll them at present, and who, "if they behave", will offer them extremely lucrative positions as K Street lobbyists once they leave public office.

According to Benito Mussolini, fascism is essentially the marriage of government and the corporation (aka corporatism).

Are we there yet?

Who wuda thought that a clever play on words by MoveOn could tweak the reactionaires so much? Is this the first time that the Senate has condemned First Amendment-protected free speech? Probably not, I'd be willing to bet.

What a bunch of hootersville comedians. For krissake, they filibustered the equal leave for time in Iraq, and also defeated the resolution to reinstate the Writ of Habeaus Corpus...

Then, these clowns, put on a dog and pony show about an ad that told it like it is. What the fuck do they think they're proving with this "sense of the senate" shit? If the senate had any goddam sense we wouldn't be in the shit we're in now.

Recall everybody who voted for this idiotic crap, no matter what party.

Good for Obama. He's spot on in calling this exactly what it is. People are dying in Iraq, Afghanistan. And, in er rooms all across this country (due to not having insurance which is no fault of their own). Meanwhile, this grab for money and power in 2008 keeps right on going. Call it what it is. It's a massive f**k you from both parties to the voters.

Obama just proved to us he is a coward.

The Republicans are dimwits for drafting this meaningless piffle of a resolution. But at least they were brave enough to do it and vote for it.

The Democrats who voted for it knew they would suffer the wrath of the organization. But at least they were brave enough to vote for it.

The Democrats who voted against it knew they would suffer the wrath of the wingnuts and the media. But at least they were brave enough to vote against it.

Hasn't Obama avoided a number of tricky votes lately?

This vote wasn't tricky it was stupid and beneath the gravitas of our highest deliberative political body. It was evidence of what American politics has sunk to by the past Republican majority and to which the current Democratic majority can't seem to resurrect.

A year from now, looking back, when we are down to one-on-one,it will be votes like this that will piggy-back on major positions she has/is/will be putting forth with the overall effect the American people will respond by electing her President.

Isn't this the same U.S. Senate which, along with the House, registers an 11% approval rating among the public?

The same U.S. Senate utterly incapable of passing meaningful legislation or blocking unconstitutional, counterproductive legislation?

I'm with Obama on this one: an empty vote on a topic unworthy of attention.

Shame on the Senate for their condemnation of the Moveon.org ad. This body should be defending free speech not condemning it. In particular, I'm very disappointed in the 20+ Senate Democrats that went along with the Republicans. In fact, disappointment is an understatement. I'm pissed. If I decide to contribute to the political process, I'll give it to Moveon.org before I'll give it to any Democrats. In fact, a third party candidate for President seems very appealing right now. At least you know where the Republicans stand (up to no good). The Democrats speak a good game but full of crap.

The guy did not even open his mouth and they were already calling him a traitor. Just as MoveOn has a right to run the the other side has a right to condem it. None stopptheir
right to publish it.

OR IS IT THAT FREE SPEECH GOES ONE WAY IN YOUR MIND.

That's what's interesting about all of this. The Dems, among others, insisted on setting the benchmarks regarding the surge and demanded that Petraeus come to congress in September to give a full report. Then, instead of giving the guy a chance they jumped on him and labeled him a patsy before he arrived.
