MoveOn Vote: Clinton a "No," Obama a No-Show

Presidential hopeful and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is claiming that he deliberately sat out a vote mounted by Senate Republicans to condemn the group MoveOn.org. Obama said that he was taking the high road by staying out of the GOP-driven fray over the group's "General Betray Us?" advertisement.

"The focus of the United States Senate should be on ending this war, not on criticizing newspaper advertisements," the senator said in a statement e-mailed to the Huffington Post. "This amendment was a stunt designed only to score cheap political points while what we should be doing is focusing on the deadly serious challenge we face in Iraq. ... By not casting a vote, I registered my protest against this empty politics."

Obama and Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE) both missed the vote on a resolution sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) to condemn MoveOn for its advertisement last week that criticized Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of US forces in Iraq. The ad has been the focus of Republican attacks on Democrats in Congress for the past week.

The measure passed on a 72-25 vote. Obama had earlier voted in favor of an alternative motion sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) that criticized actions that question the honor of armed services members generally, and highlighted partisan attacks against former senator Max Cleland and Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), both Vietnam veterans. The Boxer measure failed to advance.

The Huffington Post is still awaiting a reply from Biden's office on how he would have voted on the measure if he had attended the vote.

Obama's main rival on the campaign trail, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), voted against the Cornyn measure. Her vote drew fire from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor accused Clinton in a statement of siding "with the libelous left wing of her party."

Romney said, "The idea that she would be a credible commander-in-chief of our armed forces requires the willing suspension of disbelief."

Another Democratic presidential hopeful, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT), also voted against the Cornyn measure, but he seemed to share some of Obama's sentiment.

"It is a sad day in the Senate when we spend hours debating an ad while our young people are dying in Iraq," Dodd said. "Now that the Senate has twice voted on this ad, it is time to move on and vote to end the war."

The title for this was completely mis-leading. Obama was not a "no show" he made a decision not to participate in this farce. I think it speaks volumes that he stood up after the Republicans were cowards yesterday and let Bush off the hook by not supporting the Webb legislation. I'm pleased to know Biden took the same principled stance.

Not participating was playing it safe and trying to placate both sides. It took real guts to vote against this thing.

If Clinton had "sat out" the vote and Obama voted "no" I'll bet Huffpo would be singing his praises in three-inch type.

How can you say that? HuffPo has been completely leaningtoward Hillary and casting Obama in a negative light. Just read the headline.

And these aren't subtle nuances easy to miss.

This ad was silly in it's turn on the word sound of Petraus to betray us. But the facts were spot on.

I just wish they had phrased their add in a more powerful way......so that they did not play into the hand of Rove, GOP think tankers and the media who are whipping this thing into a wild fire, while the murderous Blackwater is getting a pass.

Arianna--

And why isn't this story on the front page of HuffPo??????????

When are you going to dump this smooth talker?

Obama is all style, no substance.

It takes REAL backbone to do what Obama did and to say, basically, "No, I'm not going to vote in this completely bogus thing." It didn't deserve his time, nor anyone else's time. Why --WHY is the senate spending its time discussing such things? Whatever happened to free speech? There is nothing here to vote ON! So they voted in favor of a resolution to what-- CONDEMN MoveOn.org for exercising their freedom of speech? So what? That amounts to nothing, and a senator should not be wasting his time in the senate on NOTHING!! He or she should be voting on things that really matter for the American people and not this stupid fluff.

"It takes REAL backbone to do what Obama did and to say, basically, "No, I'm not going to vote in this completely bogus thing."

It takes a lot more backbone to vote against it.

I was an early Obama supporter and even made contributions to his campaign. I am totally disgusted by his wimp out.

If you had taken your time to read, you would know that most applaud Obama for treating the resolution like a fart that it is.

Why would any Democrat vote for such an obvious political ploy demanding support for the war? Bush used a general for purely political purposes and expects everyone to go along. and so many Democrats did. I've come to expect Republicans to put party over country and truth.

Clinton had more guts than Obama.
She went on record and voted "NO".
He didn't bother to vote (register his disapproval by not voting????) and so he did nothing to stop this undemocratic piece of garbage from passing.

And we also learn that he DID have time to vote FOR a bill that was sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) that "criticized actions that question the honor of armed services members generally..."
So Obama took the easy way out. He voted for Boxer's idiotic and anti-civil libertarian bill that would chill freedom of speech - and did not vote against a bill offered by Republicans that did the same thing.

Good for Hillary Clinton on this one.

All of you people are fucking idiots. Im sorry, but you are. Why the FUCK was the Senate of the United States voting to codemn Moveon.org. We are in a lie of a war. I dont give a fuck if Obama voted yea, nay, or who gives a fuck...his vote seems to be the last. We've got a racist DA and Judge in Louisiana putting a young black boy in jail for years for having a fight. And the Democrats let this come to a vote? You people are all fucking idiots.

Captain, it is clear you have some axe to grind against Obama. The only thing Clinton did in the "No" vote was to legitimize a piece of nonsense resolution.

Clinton voted for the war just so she would look though and she knows the left is mad at her.

The least she could do was to pander a little.

Landrieu is Joe Lieberman with more hair, and
let's not forget Landrieu went on CNN Live,
during Katrina and "Thanked George Bush for all
his help and leadership." It took Anderson
Cooper to tell her, No, you are not telling the
truth here." That statement from him, make his
career, let's hope Landrieu's statement and her
vote to once again support BUSH will be the end
of her career and her time in the Senate.

What a bunch of pricks. Their president preside over the worst presidency this country has experienced and we're spending trillions of dollars on a needless war and we're killing our kids for nothing. And they vote to condemn MoveOn.

Fucking morons, especially the democrats who voted for it.

Thank you Sen Obama for making a point that is obvious to everyone ~ the Senate should be using it's time and energy finding common ground on the multitude of problems facing this country ~ problems that effect the lives of all Americans.

His vote was particularly refreshing after reading how Senator Warner did a last minute about face on legislation to support our troops by mandating adequate time between tours of duty in Iraq. What information did the Pentagon give him that held such sway....that justified voting against a bill he co-sponsored...that justified pulling the rug out from under Senator Webb and to do so in such cowardly manner.

It's time for the Republicans ever get serious and fulfill their obligation to this country by paying attention to the people's business ~ the state of our democracy and future of our country.

Its way past time to stop the terrible waste of time and resources!

Its way past time to honor the trust they were given when elected to the Senate.

Its way past time for the Senate to fulfill it's original intent ~ to be a deliberative body!
