AFP:

Pope Benedict XVI refused to meet US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in August, saying he was on holiday, an Italian newspaper reported Wednesday.

Rice "made it known to the Vatican that she absolutely had to meet the pope" to boost her diplomatic "credit" ahead of a trip to the Middle East, the Corriere della Sera daily reported without citing its sources.

She was hoping to meet the pontiff at his summer residence of Castel Gandolfo at the beginning of August, it said.

"'The pope is on holiday' was the official response," the paper said.

During the Eighties, Ronald Regan took a strange risk ,he was kind of a brave man with wild western attire and loud humor . Ronald Reagan gave US White House support to a few factions of Islamic Extremists to fight off USSR from Pakistani/Afgan borders ,and the enlistments took into the natural course, that today ,must be making them very defiant and fearful of USA's new attitude, that itself has challenged Islamic Extremists! How do you turn your guns around all of a sudden ,and especially when The Leaders of Region are non conversant with US White House that has started fighting Islamic Extremists in almost allover the region of interest? {narcotic]

The Pope is aware she wanted only a photo op to promote the facade that w's wh has respect and friends.

w's wh has no friends...except those they are buying and those who are buying them.

(With what did Darth Cheney offer or threaten the GOP senators who filibustered the Webb bill yesterday?)

Has anyone elese noticed that whenever any 2 sides in the Middle East plan to hold peace talks with no mention of Rice or the US; Condi jumps a plane and inserts herself and the US into the talks and then shorly thereafter the talks shut down with no agreement in sight.

She is the Anti-diplomat, flying around the world in her Prada shoes, stopping peace wherever she finds it!

Secretary Rice is truly the Whore of Baghdad.

The Pope won't meet with her because she would not assure Christians in Iraq would have safety and a functional place in the Iraqi "democracy." There are many Christian Iraqi, btw.

The BBC ran this story a few days ago.

MSM was entirely mute and this occurred in late August.

Researcher—Stanford's faculty and students don't want her back. Maybe the administration doers--and the Stanford administration is so in bed with the Military Industrial Complex and Big Oil that they may foist the Bagdad Whore on Stanford's minions.

THIS is what elistist schools like Stanford and Yale breed: non-humnas who steal, cheat, lie and murder people in the name of Corporate Profit.

The Pope is losing ground in the ME due to Bush policies. Many Christian Iraqis are blaming the Pope for not helping enough to stop the genocide taking place. Iraqi christians have been refused refugee status in many European countries; however, Syria, with a larger christian community than that of Iraq, has accepted them with open arms. Of course there are political reasons as many Iraqi christians sooner or later will return to Iraq with a greater view and compromise with its neighbor to the left.

A contradiction and a blow to the Pope. Being an Arab open the door to Syria; however, being a christian closes the door to Europe.
No wonder the Pope is enraged with Bush.

I'd avoid her too. She looks too much like a moccasin.
But, for this once, looks are revealing. She is like one.

It's refreshing to hear one religious leader advocating conflict resolution and peace.

If the Pope had any sense he would not want to meet someone who was instrumental in starting a war, that has resulted in the deaths of thousands and thousands of Iraqi's. If the Pope makes a stand against abortion, he should also make a stand against an unnecessary war.
What a duo they would make...the Pope in his Prada's, and Rice in her expensive Blahniks.

You are not going to see any positive coverage of the Pope in msm. I have to call out Huffpo on this one - they left out some info from BBC piece -

"There are at least two reasons why Pope Benedict may have decided peremptorily against a private meeting with Ms Rice.

First, it was Ms Rice who just before the outbreak of the Iraq war in March 2003 made it clear to a special papal envoy sent from Rome, Cardinal Pio Laghi, that the Bush administration was not interested in the views of the late Pope on the immorality of launching its planned military offensive.

Secondly, the US has responded in a manner considered unacceptable at the Vatican to the protection of the rights of Iraqi Christians under the new Iraqi constitution.

The Bush administration has told the Vatican that as coalition forces have not succeeded in securing the whole territory of Iraq, they are unable to protect non-Muslims."

And we have this
BBC 4/8/07:Pope decries 'slaughter' in Iraq

Pope Benedict XVI has lamented that "nothing positive comes from Iraq", in his Easter message in St Peter's Square at the Vatican.

In a live televised address, the pontiff said Iraq was being "torn apart by continual slaughter".

Pope Benedict also voiced worry over continuing violence and human suffering in parts of Asia and Africa.
