It started for us when the city of San Francisco passed an ordinance this year banning nonbiodegradable plastic grocery bags. It goes into effect in supermarkets in November. Then we learned that Americans go through 100 billion plastic grocery and shopping bags annually. It was time to do our part by switching to reusable totes.

If you are looking for a great canvas grocery tote check out HERO BAGS. Hero Bags have a flat bottom, gusseted sides, velcro top, heavy duty canvas - great bags! www.herobags.com from San Francisco, home of the banned plastic bag.

Here is a site that has some of the coolest looking bags I've seen. www.getskn.com I bought some and love them. People are always asking me where I got them so once again, the company is SKN and the website is http://www.getskn.com An added note: in addition to the quality bags they sell, their site says that every order placed provides an automatic donation to plant a tree - you can't beat that.

At my local Albertson's they have ten bags for 10 bucks. They work great and they are even green. We just keep forgetting them half the time and that drives me nuts.

I guess if I was really filthy rich I'd just buy ten every time I shop. Of course if I was filthy rich, I'd have someone else shopping?

But we like our cheapo bags and they don't even have a logo on them....oh the horror of it all.

Why nylon? I love my Barnes & Noble canvas bag, (purchased years ago) to carry groceries. I've also saved the free canvas bags that are provided at workshops or by non-profits. They house my groceries (and many other things) beautifully, and they're washable. Does anyone know where I can find hemp garbage bags?

hello, you can buy a bulk lot of canvas tote bags for $15. Do we really need ugly expensive designer bags?

Haven't you thought of using canvas or cloth tote bags? I use them all the time when I shop at the grocery store--the checkout baggers know me very well, and just put my purchases in my canvas and cloth totes; plus when I buy an item that is bagged, I'll use the bag to collect trash throughout the house, then I use 1 large 30 gallon bag for all the trash of the week.

Simple problem--simple solution--simple way to save money and Save the Environment!
