When Bush Sr made the ridiculous claim that he, former head of the CIA, had no knowledge of Iran/Contra, Rather was the only one to ask him hard questions. As a result, Rather was denied any interviews with the Bush dynasty. Think they were holding a grudge? And then somehow, in a story full of undisputed facts about Bush's waste of his expensive pilot's training becuase he went AWOL on his scheduled physical, *someone* slips in some forged documents, and minutes after the show airs conservative bloggers have all somehow noticed the subtle proof of forgery. So the fact that Bush bailed on his cushy child-of-privilege military service is totally forgotten, and Rather's career is destroyed. The saddest thing is not one "journalist" thought it was worth it to find out where those forged documents came from. So I'm hoping this lawsuit will finally answer that question, and one of Karl Rove's lackies will confess to how it was done.
When you're caught manufacturing the news instead of reporting it in an attempt to change the results of an upcoming election, you've lost all credibility.
PuffPost.
MY eyes are becoming open to the lack of ethical behavior associated with the movement from "news for the people, by the people", to profit motivated, politcally onesided, corperate conglomerates willing to sacrifice clear, unemotional, honest reporting of news for the benefit and profit of the organization. It seems Dan Rather became complacent after 44 years on the job. He thought he was valued and important to the network. That kind of service and loyalty once was rewarded. Our youth think these values passe; willing to push, pull, politic i.e. do whatever is necessary, to "win" the good jobs, or take them from those beleived to have outlasted their usefulness. Dan was a ratings maker; loved and respected by most viewers, the golden boy of CBS Nightly News. Then he was sacrificed when the corperate interest deemed it necessary. Like others we have seen over the past few years: no sacred cows. All must be willing to be sacrificed in the name of the "greater good". I love the way CBS insenuates they were forced into airing a story that they thought would not hold up. Don't they have lawyers? Don't they have Standards people? I'm sure they must! Evidently Dan wasn't such a big shot that he could walk away unscathed from this story, though CBS seems to have.
My desire is that all wrong-doing in this instance be exposed. I would like to inform any who think I don't know and understand the bottom line that: I AM NOT AS DUMB AS YOU THINK. Many think to hide ananomously within a corperate structure. In the end you will "out" yourself. Think of the many rich examples in recent history of people who have been exposed and asked to answer for their actions and decisions. Just as Dan has had to, so will you. Just as Dan was sacrificed, so can you be. Some people can look in your eye smile, be there when you get married and have babies, etc. and turn on you , all in the name of profit.
How hard will Sumner Redstone and the neocons push to completely destroy Rather?
Unfortunately "Hal Boedeker the TV Guy" from the Orlando Sentinel thinks this is all sour grapes.
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_tv_tvblog/2007/09/dan-rather-defe.html
You read me right. THE Hal Boedeker.
Hal's website even has his picture in a small TV surrounded by five point stars, so you know he's not jerking you around about the "TV Guy" claim.
Maybe Dan Rather should slink off quietly into the night. It's one thing to fight the Bush cabal and the titans and CBS. But does Dan really want to mess with Hal Boedeker the TV Guy?
How many where figure 30 is also 50?
Just those who wear watches!
These are state agents 20/20 pillarists ,how else could Media make Mafias ? End up with Murdoch kind of bureaucrats. Press fights bureaucrats ,it doesnt pamper them.
I fought on press side to get them our of the BluepresS hegemony. Mainstream or Glamour there the kind of communication cut that chap, Daheane's neck in jail.
Im happy that high executive fellow bring his case to public for jury!
GO DAN!!!!
Maybe the truth about Bush's phonied up service record will come to light, even if it is too late to prevent him from becoming president.
Let's hear more and more from this man. Why isn't this being said .....oops I forgot. The government doesn't want us to hear anything contrary to their lies.......
Go Dan! Please post here, or Huffpo let's have more of this kind of reporting. Kinda getting fluffy....nowdays.
FWIW, Dan's a major Grateful Dead fan, as well
Yes! Of course the "Corporate Media" has been currying up to this administration for the past 7 years! That same media worked mightily to help this "thug" get elected and has brought our country to the state of fascism we are in today! We all know that, but it has taken Dan Rather to bring it out in the open, to SPEAK THOSE DIRTY WORDS, in a large enough "Main Street Media" forum, for all the world to see and hear! I say GOOD FOR HIM! GO DAN GO! Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your bravery. Thank you for your wisdom. Thank you for your intelligence. Thank you for your many years of decent, REAL professional journalism, so that when it is not available to us, we can tell the difference by its absence! And CBS "defends their hiring of Couric?" What absolute fools! Only "thieves" and/or "fools" would help bring our country down as they have. Hopefully, they will all be punished for what they have done!
I'd say its been going on since the Clinton Administration, probably correlating with the extermination '96 Telecomm Act and facilitated by the extermination of the Fairness Doctrine.
I recall the Clinton Impeachment proceedings being covered as though they were completely legitimate. The words and speeches spoken by republicans at the time were swallowed and presented to the public by the as though they were completely void of partisanship. Impeachment was presented as 'only the obvious course of action.'
This wasn't exclusive to just this event either. Everything (California's Prop 187, Welfare reform, Health care, the Battle of Mogadishu, etc.) was framed in a Republican point of view. Although I never noticed it until the impeachment proceedings.
I predict that, once then next Democrat is made President, the media will perform just as it did in the 90's and history will repeat itself. Voters will flock to the republicans as they did in '94 and '00, unless something is done about our media. Why do you think Bush is trying to drag the war out until the end of his term? Once it becomes the Democrats' problem, all it takes is some Republican obstructionism and media bias to wash their hands of a mess they created.
I love Dan Rather, he is one of the last true journalist left in this nation. Go for it Dan!
Dan Rather is right.
He is leading on this crucial issue.
Thanks huffpo for giving this story some play.
How about getting Rather to post here?
We need leaders like Dan to talk about corporate control of our news media.
This would be a good time for journalists from all across the nation who have been censored, intimidated, coerced, and rewarded to force them to lie spin ignore and short change America on the truth, to step up and talk.
So many crimes of Bush are allowed to pass because the people are ignorant of the truth.
Our corrupt corporate news is a big reason why this is so.
Less Glenn Beck, more Dan Rather.
Less Bill O'Reilly, more Phil Donahue.
Less Wolf Blitzer, more Aaron Brown.
Rather is trying to lead on this issue, we should all support him any way we can.
Peace.
Can you name ONE person in corporate media who would actually have the nerve to stand for a principle? I can't. The days of Woodward and Bernstein are LONG over. The Fairness Doctrine is history. So now the corporate media says to us the viewers, we can do and say anything we damn well please. If you like it, f**k off. The ONLY thing that will work is a sustained boycott/mass tuneout that cuts into their ad revenue. THEN and ONLY THEN will they listen.
HERE IT IS FOLKS,HERE IS THE QUESTION THAT HAS NEVER,EVER BEEN ANSWERED,WHO IN AMERICA,WHO CAN PROVE BUSH SERVED HIS MILITARY TERM,I WANT JUST ONE FRIGGIN PERSON TO SHOW US,THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THAT BUSH SERVED,THAT HE WAS NOT A.W.O.L.CAN SOMEBODY FIND THAT DOCUMENT,THAT PERSON,CAN THEY.what a miserable sickening,REVOLTING,CRYING SHAME,WE HAVE A LYING,SPYING,TORTURING,MURDERER PRESIDENT WHO STOLE TWO ELECTIONS ILLEGALLY,STARTED A ILLEGAL WAR,AND WE CAN'T EVEN PROVE HIS MILITARY SERVICE WAS LEGIT,WAS HE OR WASN'T HE A.W.O.L,OR WAS HE JUST OUT CAMPAIGNING,THE LITTLE S**T WAS AWOL,AND WE ALL KNOW IT,SUE EM DAN,AND DON'T STOP,HISTORY WILL PROVE YOU RIGHT,AND THE SON OF A BUSH THE MURDERER HE IS.
