On the edge of a cobbled path that runs along a canal in the heart of Amsterdam, a pretty woman lit her cigarette, struck a pose and smiled at the tourists pouring past. Dressed in white lingerie, her bleached blonde hair bathed in red light, the prostitute beckoned men towards her and the unmade bed behind.

'They say we give Amsterdam a bad reputation,' she said, pushing her window open slightly. 'Rubbish. This is the only reputation we have.'

I was in Amersterdam this summer. The Red Light District is one of the

most attractive areas in the entire city. If the city officals want

to "clean up" Amsterdam, all they need is soap and

water. The city is filty, disgusting - just plain dirty.

The canal house boats are, no longer the once pretty

homes with flowers but instead, rotting ugly sores.

This is my fourth visit to Amsterdam and the city

ranks at the top for FILTH, not obscenity.

More multinational developers with other plans for prime property. This is not about sex or drugs - it's about big property money. If we did the same, with prostitution and marijuana only - we could balance the deficit and cut violent crime. Who's against that? The prison guard union for one, they love making space for prostitutes and druggies while they let gang bangers, armed robbers, and child molesters out on parole...

Too bad, they're going to have to lay off some sex trade workers.

With the current rate of exchange they might have trouble renting out the merchandice.

Nah!

Prostitution is a facile--if imperfect--means to distribute harder drugs. The "john" brings in heroin et al. A transaction follows, and the 'prostitute' is then in position to offer all or part of the fruit of her labours.....

ELSE(more likely): The real estate is just too valuable for that zoning...?

The classified pages of some of the newspapers in holland offer the real diversity and fun to an extent that goes way beyond what the ladies on the canals of Amsterdam offer.

Prostitution may be the world's oldest profession, and laws prohibiting prostitution may well be the oldest example of government regulation. In a free society, however, all such laws are inappropriate because they violate the basic rights and liberties of the individuals involved. Religious-based arguments asserting the immorality of prostitution should be given no legal credence.
The only argument that should be recognized today is the effects of prostitution on crime, do you believe that prostitution would increase or decrease crime?.....
