Associated Press:

Munich's mayor joyously hammered a tap into Oktoberfest's first barrel of beer, opening the annual drinking spree Saturday with the traditional cry of "It's tapped!"

Thousands of visitors crowded into the sprawling Theresienwiese festival grounds as Mayor Christian Ude launched the 174th Oktoberfest and passed the first beer to Bavarian Governor Edmund Stoiber. A 12-gun salute signaled that it was time to start serving the public.

And Munich has nice weather too - could not be
any better now. By the way, most people at the
Oktoberfest are foreigners or people from far away. So there goes your drunk statement!
Geez, I guess you still claim America is Number One in the world......

HOW does this self-acclaimed status, "Number One," benefit the average American? A transient claim on being the most polluting nation on earth? A nation clearly in the second tier in terms of health care statistics? A/the leader in the number of obese adults.....and children? The nation that gave the world....Wal-marts and McDonalds? A nation that accumulated in seven short years the greatest, national debt in the history of the world? A nation with the most people in prison--outside of China?

How is this status a benefit?

Yes! The Germans clearly care ABOUT THEIR OWN PEOPLE, and it shows BIG TIME!

Go compare Germany with what was once the USA! Then try to feel ANY pride in a country that can elect a corrupt and incompetent warmongering imbecile like Geoge Bush to the F*CKING HIGHEST OFFICE IN THE LAND!!!!?!#@

DON'T look for America here anymore! She has moved to Germany.

Many citizens of the U.S. agree with you, Dora, but how does a country, i.e., the U.S., overcome decades of self-righteousness, parochiality, group-think, disregard for community/the natural environment, anti-intellectualism, fettishist concern/fear of sexuality, and tribal materialism masquerading as religiosity?

A guiding philosophy for the U.S.: solipsism!

Remember back in the late 50s when USSR's Sputnik made Americans sh*t their pants, and a very short period of pseudo PROintellectualism flourished -- the '21' Quiz Show, Fulton Sheen, ...

This lasted only a very short time (Charles van Doren turned out to be a typical American CROOK), and then the country's dumbing down orgasm with Elvis and Marilyn Monroe revived and has gone Bush-league unabated since.

Where have you gone Adlai Stevenson? This Sahara on the Beaux Arts really doesn't give a shit! You say we're now only a mass consumer center with barely enough brains to wipe our own a**? Well, we don't care! We've got the BOMB!

If you don't think Germany has a problem with immigration, you don't know much about Germany.

Sure, Germany solved these problems generations ago. They got to where they are now after their country was destroyed (their fault, of course) millions of their people were killed (after they murdered tens of millions of others, of course) and then endured almost five decades of being split in two, one half of which had to endure a brutal communist occupation and totalitarian regime all the while being the front line of the Cold War.
