UK Paper: Israelis Seized Nuke Material In Syrian Raid

The Sunday Times (U.K.):

Israeli commandos seized nuclear material of North Korean origin during a daring raid on a secret military site in Syria before Israel bombed it this month, according to informed sources in Washington and Jerusalem.

The attack was launched with American approval on September 6 after Washington was shown evidence the material was nuclear related, the well-placed sources say.

Israel Scrambled Jets Toward Syria

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israel dispatched several fighter jets toward its border with Syria after a Syrian aircraft disappeared from Israeli air force radar screens, Israeli military officials said Sunday, reflecting the state of heightened tensions between the two sides over a reported Israeli air strike in Syria earlier this month.

The Israeli jets, which did not enter Syrian airspace, returned to their bases minutes later when it became clear the Syrian airplane had crashed. The incident took place on Saturday, which was Yom Kippur, the holiest Jewish holiday, when Israel's air force does not send any fighter craft into the air unless absolutely necessary.

The day also marked, according to the Jewish calendar, the 34th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1973 Mideast war, when the armies of Syria and Egypt launched a sneak attack on Israel on the holiday.

The Israeli army did not comment on Saturday's incident. The officials who spoke to The Associated Press did so on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss classified military information with the media.

On Thursday, Israeli fighter jets were dispatched to the northern Golan Heights, along the border with Syria, when "suspicious activity" was reported in the area, the military officials said. Later it was discovered that the objects were migrating birds, the officials said.

Great numbers of migrating birds can look like drones on air force radar screens, the officials said.

Iran, Israel Clash at IAEA Conference

VIENNA, Austria (AP) - Israel accused Iran of lying Friday while Tehran challenged the international community to send U.N. inspectors to probe its arch-rival's nuclear capabilities, in a rare and unusually bitter direct confrontation.

U.N. officials at a 148-nation meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency said they had no memory of the two hostile nations ever engaging each other directly at previous meetings and said that development - and the unusually harsh tone of their statements - in part reflected Middle East tensions.

The exchange came after Iran's chief delegate Ail Asghar Soltanieh - like Arab delegates before him - said that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had acknowledged last year that his country possessed nuclear weapons - something Olmert says he never did.

Soltanieh also criticized "the continuous silence of the U.S. ... vis-a-vis the atrocities, aggression, bloodshed and violations of over 30 resolutions of the United Nations."

That, he said, is "shameful and (a) dark point in the history of the United Nations, and the IAEA and the modern century at large."

In turn, Israeli delegate Israel Michaeli, alluding to claims that Olmert acknowledged Israel's nuclear weapons, said some previous speakers "continued to lie."

"Those who call for the elimination of Israel have no moral standing when they criticize Israeli policies aimed at defending Israel's very existence," Michaeli said.

Soltanieh then challenged the IAEA to send its inspectors into Israel "to verify who is telling the truth."

I will say this - If the Israelis's attack Sria or Iran as well as they mercilessly attacked the unarmed U.S. military ship U.S.S. Liberty as they did in 1967, they should be pretty successful. Funny, no congressional investigation of this atrocious attack on a so-called ally, no apologies by the Israelis, and the crew 40 years later has to sue the Israeli Govt to gain reparations.
