When Ashley Wood was crowned Miss South Carolina in 2004, she thought her title came not only with a tiara and a shot at Miss America, but also a $20,000 state scholarship and $5,000 national pageant scholarship.

This fall, Ms. Wood entered the Wharton School, the business-studies arm of the University of Pennsylvania. But she has yet to receive any of that scholarship money, having been locked in a dispute with the Miss South Carolina pageant for more than two years.

This sounds like what my son went through trying to collect his early-signing bonus --AFTER serving in Iraq. It took a Congressional Inquiry to get the army off its dime.

I thought this was just a ploy for all the kids
enlisting and being killed in Iraq.My mistake.
Get an education and risk being killed in Iraq?
So how many kids without the chance of a
scholarship could refuse that offer?

Whizkid.
Bavaria has somehing to do with this story?
Dummkopf!

Wake up call!! America has gone past the time a woman's professional success is based on her looks! Go out and become a porn star- or else try to succeed on ability!

well, actually, modern day Miss America contestants are typically highly educated and really accomplished, like the Wharton student profiled in the article. More often than not, they really do the pageant for the scholarship money and to list the credential on their resumes and grad school applications, should they win at the national or state level. A lot of people confuse the Miss Universe organization with Miss America, but Miss America is a lot more proactive. Unlike Miss USA, Miss America lobbies Congress and brings attention to social issues of her own choosing, like the most recent Miss America who was involved in the child porn sting opperation or the Miss America from Kentucy who's platform was homeless veterans. Miss USA/Universe is more superficial, and the prizes awarded have more to do with modeling, the entertainment industry, and making appearances at Donald Trump's golf courses, not university scholarships. Plus I don't think the USA/Universe contestants choose their own social platforms and charities during their reign. They speak and appear on behalf of the charities that the pageant organization has selected for them. Miss USA/Universe has a T&A feel, but Miss America is, by far, the most respectable and prestigeous pageant crown.

...and thus tolls the final bells on an institution which should have died thirty years ago. And now a moment of silence.

It's good to know Jon-Benet Ramsey didn't die for nothing.

You mean to tell me that beauty pageants exploit women? Who'd a thunk?

Maybe she should call on another well-known Queen in South Carolina for a resolution.
