Sotheby's To Sell Van Gogh's Last Masterpiece

One of Vincent van Gogh's final landscapes, "The Fields," will be auctioned in New York in November, a British newspaper reported Saturday.

The painting will go display at Sotheby's auction house in London on Oct. 7 and will be sold in New York a month later with an estimated price of $34 million, The Independent reported.

Officials at Sotheby's in London were not immediately available to confirm the report on Saturday.

chamalcan, the art business is not what it was in Van Gogh's day. There is so much money chasing so few good (let alone great) artists that multi-millionaires have to beg for permission to buy a painting by the hottest new face in town. I suppose it's always possible that there's some unappreciated genius out there, but it's unlikely.

What it is worth, and its potential worth, is far more important than the work itself, to an investor. Good ol' Vinny, from worthless to(nearly)priceless. Who knew?

$34 million sounds a little low to me, considering the number of paintings that have sold for $100 million plus recently. There's apparently no shortage of billionaires itching to own name-brand art works. But none of them along the line know what any of it is worth...

How ironic that at the time of his life, no one brought his work and thought he was a kook.

When Vincent was in the hospital he created alot of work that got stored in the attic of the hospital and later after he was dead and gone the guards started to use his paintings as target practice. Theo's wife went around and tried to get Vincents paintings and why she didn't get these is a mistery. She is the main reason his work is still with us today.
