Joni Mitchell is back after nine years, and she's on the attack. In the title track to her new album, "Shine," Mitchell takes a nice swipe at the Catholic Church by name.

"Shine on the Catholic Church/And the prisons that it owns," she sings. "Shine on all the Churches/that love less and less."

Mitchell was never one to mince words, but in her triumphant return on Starbucks' Hear Records, she doesn't give an inch. In "Shine," she continues: "Shine on lousy leadership/Licensed to kill/Shine on dying soldiers/In patriotic pain/Shine on mass destruction/In some God's name!"

The many comments on this blog have created an endless circular argment. This shows what sophists can do if left to their own devices.

This has way too many comments.

Hell,I'll bet half of you either didn't know who Joni Mitchell is or didn't know she was still alive.

PS. I do admire the work of some grass roots Catholic organizations, like the Catholic Workers Movement.

WOW! 415 comments, and the article's not even a day old.

Won't clog up this blog, just a few points:

1)Catholic Church is major rotten structurally, not just a "few bad apples".

2) Latest crap - trying to pressure Amnesty Interational to drop its pro-abortion position for rape victims in war zones.

3) Its patently absurd for a cabal of men who have zero experience of everyday domestic, family life to pontificate on how said life should be led eg. contraceptive, divorce.

Have always loved Joni's critical take on issues of the day. Thank God she's back! I'll be getting her CD, even though it's via Starbucks...sigh

The question before the human race is, whether the God of nature shall govern the world by his own laws, or whether priests and kings shall rule it by fictitious miracles?

I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

The greatest tragedy in mankind's entire history my be the hijacking of morality by religion. However valuable - even necessary - that may have been in enforcing good behavior on primitive peoples, their association is now counterproductive. Yet at the very moment when they should be decoupled, sanctimonious nitwits are calling for a return to morals based on superstition.

For my own part I would as soon be descended from that heroic little monkey, who braved his dreaded enemy in order to save the life of his keeper; or from that old baboon, who, descending from the mountains, carried away in triumph his young comrade from a crowd of astonished dogs -- as from a savage who delights to torture his enemies, offers up bloody sacrifices, practices infanticide without remorse, treats his wives like slaves, knows no decency, and is haunted by the grossest superstitions.
