Calling the ouster of Dan Rather from CBS News in 2006 a "travesty," newsman Ted Koppel said today that he hopes the $70 million suit filed by Mr. Rather against CBS and Viacom will bring Mr. Rather "relief from his [emotional] pain."

Mr. Koppel said he "hurt" for Mr. Rather, whom he characterized as a friend. Addressing the "60 Minutes" report about President George Bush's National Guard service that preceded Mr. Rather's departure from CBS, Mr. Koppel said the story was "much more correct than incorrect." Mr. Koppel said that those responsible for the incorrect parts of the report deserved to be chastised and punished.

It is a "travesty" that "Dan Rather was squeezed out" with such little class from CBS News, Mr. Koppel said today at a forum at Fordham University in New York City that was put on by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Burning records is not a new way to dispose of things the military wants to forget ever happened.

I have a friend whose father was part of one of the first ground patrols to enter one of the bombed areas of Japan after a nuke was dropped. His and the records of those who served with him mysteriously "burned" in a fire at the storage facility they were housed in. I believe the military did this to cover evidence that he and his unit may have been exposed to cancer-causing radiation. He did get prostate and bone cancer in his 50s or 60s.

Also, there was a famous fire in St. Louis MO which destroyed service records for many WW II vets.

Convenient if you want to get out of paying veteran benefits.

I saw an excellent site shortly after the story hit the news that dealt with the typewriter used during Bush's time in the Air National Guard supposedly not being used then and, therefore, impossible to have produced the records Rather had in his possession.

The article refuted that statement by actually naming the typewriter used by that very unit Bush belonged to and showing the font it produced which matched exactly what Dan Rather had.

naturally, that site disappeared faster than you can say DRUG-USING DRUNKEN DESERTER!

Probably the IBM "Executive" typewriter. A few days back someone linked the IBM archive which showed IBM developed proportional spacing as early as 1942.

OTOH, Occam's Razor?

Here the animated gif of the CBS document superimposed over the same document typed in Microsoft Word.

The documents that were used in the Rather report have Rove's fingerprints all over them.

These document are word for word and format for format identical to the real documents. They were recreated on a modern computer, and copied multiple times to look authentic.

These real fakes, faked out CBS, and they ran with the story in a fever pitch. It was a big risk by Rove, but it sure paid off big time.

Bush's checkered history in the National Guard was thrown off the table. and Rather got canned.

It would only have been necessary to fake ONE document and then plant an "exposure" story in the right-wing blogosphere. And it looks suspiciously as though that's just what someone (Rove?) did.

It's also possible that it's the "recreated on a modern computer" part of the story that's false. There WERE typewriters that did superscript. There WERE typewriters that could use a Times-like font. There WERE typewriters that used proportional spacing. There WERE typewriters that did all three. And they WEREN'T extremely rare or extremely expensive.

Call it "unlikely", if you like, that GWBush's National Guard unit would have had such a machine. But don't call it impossible - because it ISN'T.

Since I used an IBM Executive typewriter way way back in 1965, which had proportional spacing and whose typeface resembled Bookman or Times New Roman, can someone please cite or link where the "questioned documents" may be viewed??????

Also, the theory Rover planted "fake copies of real documents" calls to mind the controversey about the Woodstock typewriter in the Alger Hiss case.

There were also problems with kerning and superscript that was beyond the abilities of typewriters. Plus the forgery of LTC Killian's name was very sloppy.

After the lessons learned from the Vietnam war, the MIC bought up
the MSM and this is an example of their intent. Fascist treason!

Early in 2009, we need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine for the
same reason it was instituted after WW2, to fight corporate fascism!

CBS News has become the journalistic equivalent
of the Bush Administration,in that it is under the control of incompetent neocon hucksters.

i hope Dan Rather not only gets his 70 mil,but I also hope CBS is forced to make a public apology and to admit it set the man up.

Regardless of the lawsuit, Dan rather was the only one that saw the evil objectives of the Bush administration. I admire his courage and I wish to see him back where he was.

Regarding CBS ABC, NBC etc, etc, they became trash, just trash.

Post by Johnbo on TV Week:

Mr. Koppel said the story was "much more correct than incorrect."

Um, what part of the story was "incorrect"?

FACT: Bush got into the TANG using family connections jumping ahead of thousands of other applicants. His test scores - the lowest possible to qualify as a pilot - and DUI offenses that would have disqualified him were overlooked.

FACT: Bush didn't complete his obligation to the TANG. He failed to take his annual physical even after being directed to do so by his commanding officer and was consequently removed from flight status - an evevt that would have warranted disiplinary actions for someone less politically connected. His attendance record at the guard unit that he transfered to was spotty and poorly documented but, at any rate, he ceased flying - the skill that the TANG had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars developing.

FACT: Bush was able to leave the TANG and go to graduate school before his time obligation was complete.

FACT: Karen Hughes oversaw a cleansing of Bush's guard records when Bush was govenor of Texas.

The only question regarding the 60 Minutes report - which Rather was only partially involved in producing - was the possibllity that the documents might be forged. People directly involved in the unit at the time testified to the accuracy of the events the documents reveal. Curiously, the Thornburg report never ruled that the documents were forged. While chastising the CBS crew for rushing the story to deadline and not adequately vetting the documements, the commission, with an unlimited amount of time, couldn't state that the documents were forged. Go figure!!

Give the right-wing spin machine and the compliant MSM for keeping the spotlight on Rather and CBS while missing the real story - a war time president who had used a guard unit to avoided the Viet Nam war and then failed to even complete his service.

Men of integrity? We haven't had those in the news for many years. What we have are news readers. Some are pompous, some pretty boys and others are whiners, but they're all readers. And they all report it with a slant, one way or another. Dan, you went from pompous to whiner. Take your bruised, overblown ego and fade away like your dignity.

Back in the 90's, all the nut jobs on the Right swore up and down that President Clinton was murdering people in Mena, Arkansas and had a hand in the death of Vince Foster. Trouble is, for them, was that there was no evidence to prove those wild assertions.

Ten years later, we have all the nut jobs on the Left swearing that President Bush skipped out on his TANG duty. Trouble is, all the documents provided by Rather turned out to be provenly, patently false.

Now, journalists can have all the opinions they want. But the lack of credible documents would seem to refute, rather than prove, their theses.

Does everyone realize how really silly "fake but accurate" sounds? One would expect more of journalists. And to this day, we have no empirical evidence proving up these wild accusations - either against President Clinton or President Bush.

Actually it was the Alabama Air Guard that Bush was supposedly AWOL from. This issue was not new when it came up in the 2004 campaign. It came up when Bush ran for governor in 1994 and again for president in 2000. For some reason, Democrats pinned their hopes on this recycled story to defeat Bush in 2004. But any affect that it might have had was negated by the forged documents.

Rather has a long history of acrimony with the Bush family beginning in 1988 with a flare up with George HW Bush where Bush turned the tables on Rather after he asked a question about Iran-Contra by saying that it was no more fair to judge Bush's career by that then it was to judge Rather's by the time he stormed off the set when his newscast was delayed by US Open tennis coverage.

Rather just wanted it too badly and cut corners.

I think Colonel Killian had died by the time this came out again in 2004 but his son and daughter stated that he had never had anything but praise for Bush.

Correction Will7.
The documentation regarding President Bush's National Guard service were not "proven to be false." They were "not authenticated," which is not the same thing.
Furthermore, when the bruhaha about the so-called phoney documentation hit the news, the entire matter of President Bush's military service, or lack of it, disappeared like magic.

Far from "proving" that the documents in question were false, or forged, or phoney, the story simply died. Real journalists would not have let that happen.
Journalists fearful of pursuing the truth about a period of President Bush's life that was relevant, especially when he had started to dig himself into a hole and remains there, wimped out and sucked up, to retain their access to the White House.
Karl Rove's dirty little pudgy fingerprints were all over this charade.
Give him credit, if that's the term, for realizing his potential as a slimy conniver, beginning as a young man and reaching it's full flowering with his idol, George W. Bush.
Dan Rather was simply one more victim of the vilest administration in my memory, including that of Richard M Nixon.

Actually, they were proven categorically false in the blogosphere. Rather than calling Mary Mapes and Dan Rather the patented liars that they were, the CBS report just said that the reports were "not authenticated".

And, again, this is like OJ's hunt for the real killer. Don't you know that if these documents had any chance of being real, Gunga Dan would have moved heaven and earth by now to prove it?

Perhaps you have some new information on the documents that were:

Printed from Microsoft software

Obtained from Bill Burkett, a deranged Texan with a white-hot hatred for George Bush.

Purportedly signed by Colonel Killian, who categorically stated they were false.

Purportedly strong-armed by a military man who, unfortunately for Gunga Dan, had retired eighteen months before all of this happened.

And why do you think Mary Mapes was co-ordinating this report with the John Kerry Campaign consultant Joe Lockhart?

And what new evidence do you have to prove the authenticity?

Please see wikipedia for the name of all the typographers, with no political ax to grind, who say these documents are patent forgeries.

Um... bingo?

Sadly, you could post this a million times, and still, tonight when you turn on the radio or TV, someone will still be saying, "... documents LATER PROVEN TO BE FORGERIES...".

This will, of course, is what they will be saying on what they call "the news" (and nobody, I assure you, will lose his or her job for getting this "news" egregiously wrong).

Bear in mind that Karl Rove is fully cognizant that, by and large, Amurkuns "don't do nuance" :-)

Documents are easy to 'question.' Charactoer is easy to assassinate. This is the method of w's desultory political 'career.'

Fact is, w hid behind his daddy to get into the Guard but then failed to complete his 'service.' Hughes and Gonzoles made their 'careers' by hiding w's DUI's and miltary failures.

Spin this: w is now the worst president in US history.

The shiftless eldest son of GHWB got passes all his life and was bailed out by his daddy's friends for numerous misadventures and failures. All Dumbya's drinking, cocaine use, AWOL and bankruptcies were covered up and the MIC owned MSM went obediently along.

Does anyone know how much his dad had to donate to Harvard for Dumbya's MBA? I imagine he earned it himself, just like he did every other thing that was given to him. GWB was the worst prepared and personally corrupt of any man to sit in the Oval office, worst ever!!
