AP:

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

Clinton, her party's front-runner in the 2008 race, made the suggestion during a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus.

what she's really saying is let's have even more illegals flock here to to drop their anchor babies. She's a fucking idiot. Her own tongue is slowing cutting her throat.

I think that would be a great investment. But, instead of all that, why not use tax dollars to pay for public university education to all who qualify based on academic criteria?

If we want to compete golbally, we should go beyond taxpayer paid education till high school.

Shit, why not have the government take over all the businesses and ration food and assign jobs to everyone?

Because that wouldn't be in the best interest of our country. An adequately educated workforce would be.

Do you realize that public high school education is paid by taxpayers, and that was done for for a reason?

And that really helped our country compete with others in the early part of the twentieth century.

We are now lagging behind.

I agree with HumeSkeptic if we want our children to go to collge we have to provide them free college to everyone who has the desire and the ability to succeed in college. This $5,000 bond is a joke.

I think Senator Biden has a plan that would accomplish that with about $18 billion a year. Even if it takes twice that much, compare that to about $12 billion per MONTH being spent in Iraq.

Disclaimer: I'm not a Biden fan.

It does nothing to help the kids who are trying to pay for school now.

Bush's hair brain idea was to privatize social security. Hillary's hair brain idea is to privatize education funding. Same stupid idea pandering to the financial firms on Wall Street.

It's no wonder I think that Hillary is the same as Bush.

Just what we need... A financial incentive for the illegal immigrants, welfare recipients, and the destitute to procreate... Like welfare wasn't enough! Despite stupid ideas like this, I'm still a democrat... But it's becoming more challenging each day...

I agree! She's starting to sound like Hugo Chavez who bribed the poor for votes in his country, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and even the U.S.!

She's also using Hugo's tactics for banning photos of Chelsea and Jihad movies that would expose the Clinton legacy.

When she becomes President, all dissent will be banned!

But there will some who will chant "LONG LIVE HILLARY! HILLARY PRESIDENT FOR LIFE!"

Or, simply a financial incentive for anyone here to breed like frickin' rabbits. There are enough damned people on this planet. We don't need extra incentives to (re)produce more of them.

Hillary, shut the eff UP!

Not true, no, this is not welfare since it can only be used for investment and will be sitting on a bank and not producing inflation this is similar to tax breaks for the rich but for the poor it will generate more taxes in the future when more people get college degrees.

No it would not be welfare, because we would have to pay for the rich kid's education as well as the poor kid's education. We would pay now and wait 18 years.....no 22 years before we see anything out of it. This is a bad investment.

Pay now wait 22 years and maybe you'll get something out of it. Really lame idea.

Help the kids in college now, and lower the federal deficit so that the kids have good jobs when they graduate, become Republicans and cheat on their taxes.

I don't like the idea either but if provisions can be made whereby no one can withdraw the money from a bank but the assigned person/baby than there shouldn't be any problem with a family memnber/parent from touching it so in that case, any talk about welfare recipients mooching off the government and having babies just to get their hands on the money is just a fear tactic.

If every child born in the United States does get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government it is just more welfare! Clinton is pandering to the freeloaders by promoting greed under socialism.

Taxpayers would be forced to financialy support this horrible welfare program.

If this program ever sees reality then more Mexicans will be crossing the border to create more illegal "anchor babies" and futher leech of the US taxpayers.

It is interesting that when the money is invested on the future of the poor you feel sorry for the taxpayer but when a trillion is wasted destroying a small nation is good investments. It is only one month of IRAQ war do not be so cheap.

THIS IS NOT WELFARE, IS INVESTMENT ON EDUCATION in the hands of individuals a great idea worth considering

Gee, Too bad it wasn't Senator Osama Obama's idea. He could get Oprah to underwrite it. 5 grand a pop (assuming they know whom that might be) would just be chump change to her.

As an economics student, I would have to say that despite some of the comments on here, this really is an idea worthy of exploration. The savings rate in the US is beyond too low, which is a big problem. This should be considered as a way to increase the savings rate...which will lower interest rates...it will also have the benefit of giving people "more control of their own money" when they reach adulthood...and might teach them how to save better. Republicans that support social security privatization should not so easily dismiss this given their rhetoric on that issue as a way for people to have more control over their money. Please, try to be impartial about the source of this idea...just cause Hillary proposed it (not really, cause it is already being done in other countries), DOES NOT MEAN IT IS A BAD IDEA! Hillary has had a few good ideas. (P.S.-I do not support social security privatization for the reason that it would destroy the social safety net that our elders deserve when they retire regardless of their wealth.)

Comrade Student,

How much would a $5000 be worth when it is cashed in?

Does it accrue interest and how much?

What about adjusting for inflation?

What will $5000 be worth 18 years from now?

Tuition in the 70's was $300 per semester. What's it now? You may think that $300 wasn't very much in today's terms but back then, it was alot.

What's the guarantee that the money will be used for higher education, down payment on a house (?), or to buy a trip to Aruba?

When I was a child, we had savings bonds which were purchased for us and gathered interest. Mine helped to pay for my education. If Bush hadn't run us into massive debt, this would have been an excellent idea. However, until the leaders get it right and we bring some corporations, manufacturing, products and jobs back to this country, we would be hard pressed to do this. The other thing is that this does not specify "legal", which means that this would provide just one more incentive to illegals to sneak into our country to have their anchor baby. It is, however, an idea worth tweaking!

When I was a child, we had savings bonds which were purchased for us and gathered interest.

Would it PAIN you to know that those were WAR BONDS?

On May 1, 1941, the first Series E U.S. Savings Bond was sold to President Franklin D. Roosevelt by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau. On January 3, 1946, the last proceeds from the Victory Bond campaign were deposited to the Treasury. The War Finance Committees, in charge of the loan drives, sold a total of $185.7 billion of securities. This incredible mass selling achievement (for helping to finance the war) has not been matched, before or since. By the end of World War II, over 85 million Americans had invested in War Bonds, a number unmatched by any other country.

Us Budget spending is close to 3 trillion dollars ie 3000 billion dollars 20 billion dollars = 20/3000 = 1/150 = 0.0066

It will be invested every year. I do not know what you are arguing about.

Never heard a peep out of any of these bloggers about the $140 billion, (that's after the $40 billion, that's after the -what?- $70 billion) that Bush requested AND IS GOING TO GET to continue his destructive policies toward Iraqis before he takes on the Iranians ad infinitum. Yet mention $5,000 for a new American life and from under the rocks crawl the hordes of welfare mom haters with all the math to back up their "humanism". How about a math check on $600 billion-and-counting for war? -- how far is that going to set us back especially since we're borrowing from our richest nemisis to pay for it? Americans like to brag about how "good" they are but ask them to do one humanistic thing for the good of mankind and -- alright, forget mankind -- do it for the good of Americans, and watch the hue and cry!
F'ing pathetic!

The stupid war is not the story in this article.

Any form of welfare (even corperate white collar or for the military establishment) is not acceptable.

The "stupid war" impacts everything we do, think or plan or hope for in the foreseeable future, some say for generations to come. Sorry to break the news to you.

Your last statement is your opinion and nothing more - nowhere is it engraved in stone. Where does the Constitution state that capitalism is the law of the land? Doesn’t it in fact say something about the federal government among other things providing for the “general welfare”? Hillary appears to be living up to the words and spirit of the Constitution and thinking much further into the future than you are about the destiny of our children.

Every forward and enlightened country on the planet has some form of "welfare", including this one. Universal health care is on the way in, which I’m sure will distress you greatly but you better deal with it.

Why? Post capitalist societies should and will make use of capital mechanism to increase productivity and social cooperation in a free market environment. It seems that some people only reject capitalism when benefits the masses.

A better idea would be to offer $5,000 to any woman who waits until she is 21 to have a child.
