I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Senate Democratic leaders will send a letter "early next week to Mark P. Mays, CEO of Clear Channel Communications, calling on him to publicly repudiate Rush Limbaugh's characterization of troops who speak out against the Iraq war as "phony soldiers."

Read the full letter below the fold. ThinkProgress has more.

Mr. Mark P. Mays

CEO, Clear Channel Communications Inc.

200 East Basse Road

San Antonio, TX 78209

Dear Mr. Mays,

Story continues below

At the time we sign this letter, 3,801 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq, and another 27,936 have been wounded. 160,000 others awoke this morning on foreign sand, far from home, to face the danger and uncertainty of another day at war.

Although Americans of goodwill debate the merits of this war, we can all agree that those who serve with such great courage deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. That is why Rush Limbaugh's recent characterization of troops who oppose the war as "phony soldiers" is such an outrage.

Our troops are fighting and dying to bring to others the freedoms that many take for granted. It is unconscionable that Mr. Limbaugh would criticize them for exercising the fundamentally American right to free speech. Mr. Limbaugh has made outrageous remarks before, but this affront to our soldiers is beyond the pale.

The military, like any community within the United States, includes members both for and against the war. Senior generals, such as General John Batiste and Paul Eaton, have come out against the war while others have publicly supported it. A December 2006 poll conducted by the Military Times found just 35 percent of service members approved of President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq, compared to 42 percent who disapproved. From this figure alone, it is clear that Mr. Limbaugh's insult is directed at thousands of American service members.

Active and retired members of our armed forces have a unique perspective on the war and offer a valuable contribution to our national debate. In August, seven soldiers wrote an op-ed expressing their concern with the current strategy in Iraq. Tragically, since then, two of those seven soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq.

Thousands of active troops and veterans were subjected to Mr. Limbaugh's unpatriotic and indefensible comments on your broadcast. We trust you will agree that not a single one of our sons, daughters, neighbors and friends serving overseas is a "phony soldier." We call on you to publicly repudiate these comments that call into question their service and sacrifice and to ask Mr. Limbaugh to apologize for his comments.

Limburger has once again shown his arrogance and lack of intelligence. I have to give him one thing... he is at least smarter than Bush. I know it's a small victory. Ok, it's a very very small victory. But Bush, at least, got an education beyone high school and I am sure the tutors that did all his work got educated.
Did Limburger serve in our military? The answer is no. He was of the proper age during the Vietnam war and was a college dropout. Why did he not serve as either a draftee or enlistee?
I think it would be a forgiveable offense of a few men in uniform were to slap that smirk off his face and make him squeel like a pig. Is that wrong of me to say?

Agreeing wth anything Mr. Limbaugh says is impossible. Yet he has a right to free speech, just as I have the right to turn him off when I hear his voice, but while I don't listen, others have a right to be turkeys along with him. Free speech is accorded to Americans.

I think the most appropriate response would be to have Limbaugh removed from Armed Forces Radio. People serving overseas don't need to listen to him insulting them like this.

RushSlimeball insults the honor and dignity of every person who ever served, thereby handing the Dems the Head of the Neocon-Hydra on a platter. Am I to understand that the best our Dem (dim?) leaders can come up with is this tepid, muzzled "letter" (yep, that's right, "letter") to a person no one ever heard of who happens to be the CEO of a company no one ever heard of? This would have been a good time for a full frontal assault demanding a condemnation from every right winged nutcake supporter in the country. Starting with everyone who ever called us less than totally patriotic. Bill Maher was right, the Dem leaders are "a bunch of pussies!"
I hope my beloved Moveon.org will be our voice on this one, too.

"RushSlimeball insults the honor and dignity of every person who ever served"

Wrong Wrong Wrong LJ! It should read: RushSlimeball insults the honor and dignity of every person who ever BREATHED. This man is the biggest pig on the planet, and I am not talking about his size. I'm talking about what comes out of his mouth. He and Anne Coulter would make a perfect pair. They should get together. First Rush needs a vasectomy though. If they reproduced we may meet the anti-christ. He has insulted and attempted to diminish nearly every person he has spoken about. If the wingnuts had to work in an office with this person in the real world and he wasn't know as a so called celebrity, most of them would have beat the hell out of him by now.

Even better, boycott Limbaugh's advertisers.

Call up Ruth's Cris Steakhouse and ask them if it's true about them supporting hoof'n'mouth disease?

Wheras any official condemnation by Congress of any organization opposed to the Iraq war or any other policy advocated by our President is not only justified but to be actively encouraged, any time spent by Congress to criticize a known champion of Freedom is not only wasted, but an insult to our troops as well.

The only true way to honor the troops is to fully obey the words of Freedom as spoken by our beloved President and Patriots like Rush Limbaugh. Everything Rush says is in honor of Freedom and America. Therefore anything said against either Rush our the President is against Freedom and America.

All dissenters need to shut up and do as they are told. Rush will tell you what to do and our President will tell you how much you're going to like it.
