A Taliban suicide bomber wearing an Afghan army uniform set off a huge explosion Saturday while trying to board a military bus in the capital, killing 30 people, most of them soldiers, officials said. Hours later, the Afghan president offered to meet personally with the Taliban leader for peace talks and give the militants a position in government.

Strengthening a call for negotiations he has made with increasing frequency the last several weeks, President Hamid Karzai said he was willing to meet with Taliban leader Mullah Omar and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a former prime minister and factional warlord leader.

For the primitives among us.
One can condemning, justly, Bush admin. for Iraq disaster AT SAME TIME as supporting the necessary invasion of Afghanistan.

The biggest problem in Afghanistan is mismanagement by omission: NOT killing enough people.

I think that one and and all Al Qaeda members a must be exterminated and their financial and logistical supporters at least jailed.

Iraq is a different story. We just have to get out of there in an intelligent manner.

Hint:US leaving Viet Nam; UK leaving Palestine or Napoleon leaving Russia in 1813 are NOT good models for withdrawal.

Afghanistan has never been conquered. The Busholini Regime has the hubris to believe that they can change that history. For a real education on this subject, two books are excellent: "Imperial Hubris" & "See No Evil". A local library should have them both.

Let's be honest and instead of "taliban" lets call them what they are: zealous religious conservatives - like the base of the Republican party.

Thanks to the ever inept Bu$hCo, the taliban is alive and thriving.

Thanks, Georgie, you have done a heckuva job.

The DEA is making too much money on the "war on drugs" in Afghanistan to care about our soldiers or the Afghan people. Always follow the money. I have a sister in Afghanistan. She is not a big fan of the Taliban... And we would have made more progress in general if we weren't side tracked by Bush/Cheney's big oil adventure in Iraq.

I've read on another site that Karzai has made a deal with the Taliban and agreed to let the Taliban participate in the government. He's signed his own death warrant, not that I care, but just think of all the lives lost in this Bush/Carlyle Group fiasco and how it was all for naught. We will be back at Square One.

Surrender Monkey Karzai might as well say that he has lost the war because we invaded Iraq.

Then we can blame it all on Bush and Cheney BEFORE they can PASS IT ON to the next admin.

America should have paid more attention
to history.

We are now busy learning lessons the English
and the Soviet Union learned long ago.

There is no "there" in Afghanistan.
You can't fight the air.

You can't land on a fraction.........

Get us the hell out.
That wine steward we put in charge is about
to go wide-stance
with the Taliban,
a tacit admission of our utter
failure.
Game over.
Harvest poppies.
Me love you long time.

But back in 2002 our President said that Taliban were out of business. This headline must be a mistake.

-----------------------

Bush: "Working with a fine coalition, our military went to Afghanistan, destroyed the training camps of Al Qaida, and put the Taliban out of business forever." [11/24/03]

Bush: "Because of American soldiers and our brave allies and friends, who have fought beside them, the Taliban is out of business." [3/15/02]

Bush: "Our first objective in the first theater against the war against terror has been achieved: The Taliban are out of business." [2/4/02]

Bush: "Now thanks to the United States and our fine allies, Afghanistan is no longer a haven for terror, the Taliban is history, and the Afghan people are free." [8/14/03]

Bush: "Today, Afghanistan is a world away from the nightmare of the Taliban." [7/12/04]

Skeptic, we can always count on you to celebrate any American setbacks and Terrorist gains. You're lucky that your such a small potatoe that no one records all the blather you spew. It would come back to haunt you too.

So what's worse? A person who kill himself and thirty others for self governance or a man who kills hundreds of thousands and displaces millions for oil?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:18 AM on 09/29/2007

Who killed hundreds of thousands, and where exactly do you get your numbers from?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:43 PM on 09/29/2007

Bush did. There are several well documented estimates by state-of-the art techniques. Look'em up. One was published in Lancet- a highly prestigious Medical Journal. That study put the total around 600,000. A more recent study claims that the number is over a million.

Of course, these are estimates, but that's always the case in wars and large natural disasters. You can't count each dead.

The estimate of Iraqi dead from the American invasion of Iraq is between 75,000 to 600,000 people. Thanks to good old American fascism for oil.

OK miscalculate,
so explain how you compare 4 years of warfare to ONE terror act. Get some brains than come back to argue to your intellectual superiors.

Self Governance?

The Taliban are not out for self governance. They are trying to keep the population in control so that they can live in some sort of 12th century Muslim theocracy. The version of society they are willing to kill for is complete with stonings for adultry, illiterate women and no real contact with the outside world.

If that's your idea of utopia you should be packing your bags right now.

ceasenake,

I never used the word "utopia" and that was never my question. Who made you "king" to tell others how to live?

So what is the difference between "12th century Muslim theocracy" killing 30 innocent people and "21th century fascism" killing 100's of thousands for oil?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:02 PM on 09/29/2007

Sorry, but only a sexist/misogynist could defend the Taliban's actions as "self-governance". Maybe you could come up with some equally creative description for the motives of the KKK, for example.

Easily the most idiotic statement of the day.
trying to comparing a few hours casualty total by Taliban to 7-15 year total of possible casualties all over the world by all parties combined.
What a mental midget...
