I Like ItI Don’t Like It

After convention speeches by the two Pats - Robertson and Buchanan - in 1992 helped elect Bill Clinton, organizers of the GOP's quadrennial gatherings effortlessly replaced Holy Roller hellfire with Happy Days hip hop.

In theory, political parties, whose function is to win first and govern later, are constantly evolving and adapting to changing demographics, issues and culture shifts.

But in practice in 2007, the Republican Party is diving for bottom. George Bush, the party's presidential candidates, and Republicans in Congress have set about destroying virtually everything they built.

They are defying all theories of rational self-interest, with behavior comparable to that of the Mets, that have in just 18 games thrown away a seemingly insurmountable advantage. Or, in the world of poker, behavior comparable to Mike "Full Tilt" Matusow, who has blown millions in stunning displays of ineptitude.

In fact, it is hard to find a match for the GOP's hodge-podge of manic stupidity: (Read more below)

The Supreme Court nomination of Harriett Miers; the mangling of New Orleans; the perseverating support of Rumsfeld and Gonzales; the insulation of Tom DeLay from ethics inquiries; the shunning of a presidential debate at Morgan State, a historically black college; the meticulous cultivation of corruption on Capitol Hill; the derisive treatment of such appointees as Paul O'Neil and Christine Todd Whitman turning them into attention-getting critics of the administration.

Nothing however, better exemplifies the compulsive irrationality that has taken over the Republican Party than its handling of the Hispanic electorate.

Latino voters, as Bush demonstrated in 2004, are by no means locked into the Democratic fold. On top of that, Republican strategists have been pounding for a decade the theme that Hispanics are crucial to the GOP future.

Ken Mehlman, who ran both Bush's 2004 campaign and the RNC, declared in a July 2006 speech (one of many on the subject) that as party chair,

"I know...that a Republican Party that does not reach out to Hispanics cannot win ... and a Republican Party that does not reach out to Hispanics does not deserve to win."

Similarly, Ed Gillespie, who ran the RNC before Mehlman, and who is now counselor to the president, laid it on the line in an April 2006 Wall Street Journal op-ed:

Story continues below
advertisement

"The Republican Party cannot become an anti-immigration party. Our majority already rests too heavily on white voters, given that current demographic voting percentages will not allow us to hold our majority in the future. Between 2000 and 2004, President Bush increased his support in the Hispanic community by nine percentage points. Had he not, John Kerry would be president today.... Anti-immigration rhetoric is a political siren song, and Republicans must resist its lure by lashing ourselves to our party's twin masts of freedom and growth -- or our majority will crash on the shoals."

House and Senate Republicans have not only led the charge in killing immigration reform legislation, however, but their rhetoric has served to legitimize explicitly anti-immigrant and anti-Hispanic calls to action in city councils, on numerous web sites, on talk radio, and in public discourse generally.

Before the massive May 1, 2006, "A Day Without Immigrants" protests, Iowa Representative Steve King (R) declared:

"What would that May 1st look like without illegal immigration? There would be no one to smuggle across our southern border the heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamines that plague the United States, reducing the U.S. supply of meth that day by 80%. The lives of 12 U.S. citizens would be saved who otherwise die a violent death at the hands of murderous illegal aliens each day. Another 13 Americans would survive who are otherwise killed each day by uninsured drunk driving illegals. Our hospital emergency rooms would not be flooded with everything from gunshot wounds, to anchor babies, to imported diseases to hangnails, giving American citizens the day off from standing in line behind illegals. Eight American children would not suffer the horror as a victim of a sex crime."

King's rhetoric undoubtedly appeals to many of his constituents - he gets re-elected by large margins - but some might suspect that the Iowa congressman is a Democratic plant. King's remarks, needless to say, are extensively covered in Spanish language media.

Conservative radio talk show host Neal Boortz does him one better.

"When we yank out the welcome mat, and they all start going back to Mexico, as a going away gift let's all give them a box of nuclear waste.... Tell 'em it'll heat tortillas."

Add to this the behavior of the current crop of Republican presidential candidates, all of whom know the importance of Latino voters in the general election.

In 2000 -- the last contested fight for the GOP nomination -- it would have been inconceivable that the candidates would have turned down a debate on Univision, the largest Spanish language television network in the country.

This year, with the exception of John McCain, they did.

Along similar lines, as recently as March 2006, Romney backed legislation that would have put millions of illegal immigrants on a "path to citizenship." Giuliani, in turn, was an outspoken supporter of immigrants, legal and illegal. Now, both of them have become unabashed critics of immigration reform, and treat as radioactive talk focused on immigrants' rights.

Of course, there could be a more subtle strategy at work here.

Perhaps Republican kingpins consider the best possible long-term strategy letting Democrats take over responsibility for the extraordinary mess Bush will leave behind. The next president will have to deal with Iraq, Iran with the bomb, biological and chemical threats, $8.98 trillion in national debt, global warming, rising gas prices, a Mideast on fire, overstretched troops, a legion of returning wounded soldiers, a country unprepared for its aging population, North Korea's supply of nuclear technology to Syria, a steadily eroding dollar, a surging China, and an exponential increase in the number of those who wish America ill.

Is this why the party plagued by weak allegiance on the part of female voters has three frontrunners for the nomination with a combined total of seven marriages and three trophy wives? And the fourth top candidate a Mormon at a time of anti-Mormon caricature (Under the Banner of Heaven, Big Love) facing major hurdles with the party's evangelical base?

There is a precedent for this. The last time the Republican Party was this stupid was in 1972 with Watergate. In the 1974 elections the Democrats triumphed in Congress, and in 1976 Jimmy Carter won the White House.

Success was, however, short lived: Interest rates, inflation, and joblessness skyrocketed; Iran took hostage 66 Americans at the U.S. embassy in Teheran; and the 1980 election produced the most conservative presidency in decades, kicking off 24 years of Republican ascendancy.

I hope the GOP is committing suicide if it means there political power is severely reduced. Their assault on the checks and balances of our form of government and our American way of life is unforgivable.

However, I suspect the party elders would not agree with your premise. Their base can be relied upon and will turn out for them in elections. The GOP base may occasionally and severely criticize their party leaders but would rather die than vote for a so-called Liberal.

Also you do not mention how effective Bush/Cheney have been in enabling/installing like-minded, powerful people in corporations, in the military, in the media, in the government bureaucracy and on the Supreme Court.

I believe they are doing exactly what they set out to do, not realizing the consequences to their own sorry skins.....

They want fiefdoms
They want to 'drown the government in the bathtub'
They want gated communities around their oh, so white mega-church facilities (Uber StripMallUSA)
They want private schooling for the spawn.
They want private places to gather on their own
They want white is right
They want might is right

That about sums it up.

Zieg Hell.

The immigration issue shouldn't be a "let's get ourselves elected with the newly arrived Mexicans" issue. It is an epochal issue that the majority of Americans including our scientists, environmentalists, Black Americans and Hispanic Americans are deeply concerned about as it relates to OVERPOPULATION and the destructive effects on the environment, institutions, and infrastructure. Find me one hundred black citizens who don't want the borders under control. Ninety-three percent of blacks who voted, voted Democrat. Talk about a treacherous, rotten political party. Every survey since the late sixties reflects that the majority of Americans want the borders closed and today the vast majority do. Mexico has the highest fertility rate in the Western World. A recent study by our Nobel Laureates reflects that the carrying capacity of our environment is already overwhelmed - during a period of radical topographcial and weather change. What about the physical health and long term security of our posterity? You think that the Clinton's or the Bush's give a shit about that? That immigration has become so politicized is a disgrace. No other people in the Western World would allow themselves to be so abused by their politicians and the moronic political extremes such as exist in the United States. It is rapidly beginning to be understood by a minority in the U.S. and a majority abroad that, essentially, nothing can deflect or contain the violent and suicidal idiocy of American political and economic culture.

As someone who has studied demography, I think I am qualified to say that you are full of shit. Demographers, by and large, are not concerned about overpopulation anymore... as a matter of fact most of the developing world (the developed world already did) is going though a huge fertility decline. Countries in Europe and around the world are actually paying women to have children.

Most policy makers and demographers think that the United States has a "healthy" population growth rate. This is only because immigration and immigrants and their "high fertility rate" compensates for the sub-replacement fertility rates of Anglo women.

And by "high," I mean the average Mexican woman (in Mexico), now has (less than) three kids during her lifetime. (TFR =2.75)

Oh... and Mexico doesn't have the highest fertility rates either in our hemisphere... Mexico's TFR is lower than Panama, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay, Bolivia, Haiti, and Venezuela...

So stop hiding your racist views behind science. I would rather deal with another SP Huntington than someone trying to hijack the environmentalist movement because they are afraid they will need to learn Spanish.

Too bad you weren't around for the Eugenics movement.

Worried about overpopulation? Cut out your own ovaries! That would help me sleep better at night.

Well written, but not a shred of real evidence to back up your claims. What do you mean by "close the borders?" Sounds like a nice bumper sticker, but what does that mean? Have you no brain, have you failed your education courses, have you lost your mind? As long as there is a viable reason to get into this country, like perhaps a better life, a better market for the drugs we in the USA love to consume, then there will always be a way to get inside the country. By tunnel, by walking, by boat, by whatever means is required to do what one needs to do. The fence is just a stupid waste of money. Deal with the root causes and you may have a 1/2 chance of success. Otherwise, it;s all pissing in the wind. As for the GOP and it's current politicians and policies. HA!!!!!!!!!! How long can a party survive when the only constituiants are from Mississippi, Georgia, Tenn, Alabama, Louisiana, and the other "Southern" states. Looking pretty white and redneck to me.

Thinking Americans who identified with being conservatives, have been leaving the GOP in droves and re-registering as Independents and will not vote for a neocon.

Real Christians are equally disgusted with the charlatans and hypocrites who dominate the once grand Old Party and will not vote for another image driven, religious phony.

Only those delusionally driven by fear and loathing or a blinding prejudice for an (R), will be voting for the next GOP offering and that will only win five states at best.

Hillary should stay in the Senate and run against Reid. Obama needs to season his views, trust his heart, fight the MIC and promote a populist revolution as Edward's VP.

They were in the same place in 1974.

Unless they distance themselves from the Bush years definitively by supporting another Watergate type impeachment then they go down the drain with Bush and the neocons.

Either way works for me.

It is truly amazing that in the fear of loss of PROFITS, the mainstream press and the corporations have thorougly convinced the public that the dreaded SOCIALISM is is a nightmare waiting to happen.

Most peole don't even know what they talk about when they parrot the term as some dreaded communist plot to take over the country.

The Republicans and corporations have been amazingly effective at convincing the public that ANY program that we as a country do through our government is BAD. So we have allowed the gutting of our regulatory agencies and are turning very cost effective programs like Medicare over to the private sector to "harvest" profits at the governments expense.

Any country that has turned against it's own government cannot last. As the government crumbles from within from neglect and rampant cronism, the bridges will fall, the airlines will stop funtioning and people will die from lack of health care and bad drugs approved by a corporate controled FDA.

The plundering is well underway.

The people of this nation need to be weaned from the tit of society. The plundering is CAUSED by government intervention. Those who blame free enterprise are the cause of what they blame free enterprise for. As the government becomes bigger things get worse!!!! Why can't you see that? It's nothing to do with republican/democrat. They are both just as bad. Bush was no better than Clinton, in many ways he was worse.

You really nailed it.
We the people of America have through our own lazyness have allowed the big money/corporate cabal to take over and ruin our government and now they will ruin everything else they come in contact with, why? GREED GREED GREED! We need to clean out our government, get rid of the big money government. Even if we have to take up armes go to Washington and kill all the politicians to do it.
wasn't it jefferson that said the fruit of democracy needs to be fertilized with the blood of patriots once in a while?

I'd be more incline to say that poor urban black areas are from the effect of self segregation.

If you are referring to the HBC debate, I don't understand why it is necessary. If one is black, and has a question for the president that is relevant on a federal scale, they can ask it while standing next to a white person.

You were correct, self help is the way. The problem is that you are worrying about everyone else in your community. All you can do to help is help yourself. Take face of your family and let others worry about theirs. If you are climbing the proverbial ladder, you can't take the others with you.

God, what a sick view of the world. That's right Doug, survival of the fitest right. I wonder how many people you have screwed and walked over to to where you are.

And we wonder what is wrong with America.

Oh, I just can't imagine why blacks would want to move out of their neighborhoods to good schools and nice homes in the burbs. I mean I am sure they are all rich enough to do it right Doug? They just don't want to. I mean whte people would just welcome them with open arms right Doug.

What a racist jerk!

This is very similiar to the accounts in Tuchman's excellent book "The March of Folly" wherein she describes what she calls "acts of folly"--the British overplaying their hand with the colonies, US escalation in Vietnam, the corruption of the Renaissance Church--all examples of governments taking what is clearly a dangerous and ultimately destructive course when other courses are plainly available.

Why would the Republicans take this course? Well they have painted themselves into a corner--all they have left (with some, not all Republican voters) is the "real Americans" card--you know, no immigrants, no homosexuals, no liberals, no intelligensia, no Hollywood types. Oy, perhaps less a suicide than euthansia.

What amazed me in the long list of GOP problems in this article, the Iraq War was not mentioned and received only a passing word as one of many "messes" the next President faces. The Republicans had TOTAL CONTROL of this country for many years, and they screwed it up BIGTIME. The Iraq War is the culmination of their ideological bungling and disrespect for America's vital interests and her role in the world. The Republicans deserve to be turned out in droves, taking their bankrupt policies with them.

Blaming the folk who flee poverty from the South, for the drug problem is willfully ignorant. Lou Dobbs keeps pointing out all the drugs that get imported but does he ever cite the clear evidence that GHWB and Bill C. were centrally involved in the explosion of crack cocaine?

Check out the Pulitzer prize work done by Gary Webb, or Google the Mena Airport and read how Vince Foster, Barry Seals, Marc Rich, Jim McDougal and BCCI were all involved in the drugs brought up during Iran/Contra. Bill didn't come from Hope, he came from Hot Springs!
