I Like ItI Don’t Like It

After convention speeches by the two Pats - Robertson and Buchanan - in 1992 helped elect Bill Clinton, organizers of the GOP's quadrennial gatherings effortlessly replaced Holy Roller hellfire with Happy Days hip hop.

In theory, political parties, whose function is to win first and govern later, are constantly evolving and adapting to changing demographics, issues and culture shifts.

But in practice in 2007, the Republican Party is diving for bottom. George Bush, the party's presidential candidates, and Republicans in Congress have set about destroying virtually everything they built.

They are defying all theories of rational self-interest, with behavior comparable to that of the Mets, that have in just 18 games thrown away a seemingly insurmountable advantage. Or, in the world of poker, behavior comparable to Mike "Full Tilt" Matusow, who has blown millions in stunning displays of ineptitude.

In fact, it is hard to find a match for the GOP's hodge-podge of manic stupidity: (Read more below)

The Supreme Court nomination of Harriett Miers; the mangling of New Orleans; the perseverating support of Rumsfeld and Gonzales; the insulation of Tom DeLay from ethics inquiries; the shunning of a presidential debate at Morgan State, a historically black college; the meticulous cultivation of corruption on Capitol Hill; the derisive treatment of such appointees as Paul O'Neil and Christine Todd Whitman turning them into attention-getting critics of the administration.

Nothing however, better exemplifies the compulsive irrationality that has taken over the Republican Party than its handling of the Hispanic electorate.

Latino voters, as Bush demonstrated in 2004, are by no means locked into the Democratic fold. On top of that, Republican strategists have been pounding for a decade the theme that Hispanics are crucial to the GOP future.

Ken Mehlman, who ran both Bush's 2004 campaign and the RNC, declared in a July 2006 speech (one of many on the subject) that as party chair,

"I know...that a Republican Party that does not reach out to Hispanics cannot win ... and a Republican Party that does not reach out to Hispanics does not deserve to win."

Similarly, Ed Gillespie, who ran the RNC before Mehlman, and who is now counselor to the president, laid it on the line in an April 2006 Wall Street Journal op-ed:

Story continues below
advertisement

"The Republican Party cannot become an anti-immigration party. Our majority already rests too heavily on white voters, given that current demographic voting percentages will not allow us to hold our majority in the future. Between 2000 and 2004, President Bush increased his support in the Hispanic community by nine percentage points. Had he not, John Kerry would be president today.... Anti-immigration rhetoric is a political siren song, and Republicans must resist its lure by lashing ourselves to our party's twin masts of freedom and growth -- or our majority will crash on the shoals."

House and Senate Republicans have not only led the charge in killing immigration reform legislation, however, but their rhetoric has served to legitimize explicitly anti-immigrant and anti-Hispanic calls to action in city councils, on numerous web sites, on talk radio, and in public discourse generally.

Before the massive May 1, 2006, "A Day Without Immigrants" protests, Iowa Representative Steve King (R) declared:

"What would that May 1st look like without illegal immigration? There would be no one to smuggle across our southern border the heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamines that plague the United States, reducing the U.S. supply of meth that day by 80%. The lives of 12 U.S. citizens would be saved who otherwise die a violent death at the hands of murderous illegal aliens each day. Another 13 Americans would survive who are otherwise killed each day by uninsured drunk driving illegals. Our hospital emergency rooms would not be flooded with everything from gunshot wounds, to anchor babies, to imported diseases to hangnails, giving American citizens the day off from standing in line behind illegals. Eight American children would not suffer the horror as a victim of a sex crime."

King's rhetoric undoubtedly appeals to many of his constituents - he gets re-elected by large margins - but some might suspect that the Iowa congressman is a Democratic plant. King's remarks, needless to say, are extensively covered in Spanish language media.

Conservative radio talk show host Neal Boortz does him one better.

"When we yank out the welcome mat, and they all start going back to Mexico, as a going away gift let's all give them a box of nuclear waste.... Tell 'em it'll heat tortillas."

Add to this the behavior of the current crop of Republican presidential candidates, all of whom know the importance of Latino voters in the general election.

In 2000 -- the last contested fight for the GOP nomination -- it would have been inconceivable that the candidates would have turned down a debate on Univision, the largest Spanish language television network in the country.

This year, with the exception of John McCain, they did.

Along similar lines, as recently as March 2006, Romney backed legislation that would have put millions of illegal immigrants on a "path to citizenship." Giuliani, in turn, was an outspoken supporter of immigrants, legal and illegal. Now, both of them have become unabashed critics of immigration reform, and treat as radioactive talk focused on immigrants' rights.

Of course, there could be a more subtle strategy at work here.

Perhaps Republican kingpins consider the best possible long-term strategy letting Democrats take over responsibility for the extraordinary mess Bush will leave behind. The next president will have to deal with Iraq, Iran with the bomb, biological and chemical threats, $8.98 trillion in national debt, global warming, rising gas prices, a Mideast on fire, overstretched troops, a legion of returning wounded soldiers, a country unprepared for its aging population, North Korea's supply of nuclear technology to Syria, a steadily eroding dollar, a surging China, and an exponential increase in the number of those who wish America ill.

Is this why the party plagued by weak allegiance on the part of female voters has three frontrunners for the nomination with a combined total of seven marriages and three trophy wives? And the fourth top candidate a Mormon at a time of anti-Mormon caricature (Under the Banner of Heaven, Big Love) facing major hurdles with the party's evangelical base?

There is a precedent for this. The last time the Republican Party was this stupid was in 1972 with Watergate. In the 1974 elections the Democrats triumphed in Congress, and in 1976 Jimmy Carter won the White House.

Success was, however, short lived: Interest rates, inflation, and joblessness skyrocketed; Iran took hostage 66 Americans at the U.S. embassy in Teheran; and the 1980 election produced the most conservative presidency in decades, kicking off 24 years of Republican ascendancy.

I agree with this article, but I think the biggest Republican blunder by far is the party's insane unwavering support for the Iraq disaster.

The majority of Americans long ago concluded the war was a bust. A lot of these people, however, made a stupid decision to back Bush, both in his original decision to go to war and in his re-election. That means there's a lot of cognitive dissonance out there--these people are aware they were seriously wrong, but do not want to have their faces rubbed in it. They do not want responsibility for their actions at all.

A smart Republican candidate could win these people over by admitting the war needs to end now while still stroking their egos, telling them that their desire for security and traditional values was admirable, that we were ALL simply misinformed of all the pesky details, blah, blah, blah.

It's all patronizing bullshit, but potential Republican voters lap shit up. Add a manufactured Christian fascist outrage du jour--preferably involving queers--and a little election fraud and you've got another razor-thin Republican win.

The repukes definitely don't want to get reelected, for very simple reasons, they put the economy in shambles, national security is no better, helth care down the tube.
What they want is to give a poinoned gift to the Dems, and hope that they won't be able to magage it all and make a come back.
Then in 2012 they will hit and hit hard and probably be back in power for 4 or 6 mandates.
Then do as they please.

Yuk it up.

The only party that is on the verge of suicide is the Democrats, when/if they nominate Hillary.

Hell, I won't vote for her...EVER...and neither will over 50% of the population. Factor in that the GOP has finally pulled it's head outtov it's ass & is refusing to kowtow to the JesusFreaks (clearly just ONE issue that demonstrates this), and 2008 has become the GOPS victory to lose.

A moderate Repub with a history of supporting abortion rights (McCain won't make it)...Rudy, Fred and/or Mitt will wipe the floor with Chang-ki-Hillary.

STOP HILLARY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dearest poomplet,

Your prognostications regarding the 2008 presidential elections are to laugh. All three of your picks have unsurmountable flaws that would preclude any of them from winning the republican nomination if there was anybody stronger than any one of them, yet alone the general election.

Your desire to have your "team" win over that horrible, horrible hillary is just that - a desire. You have no ability to influence what happens in the election. You'd have to crawl out of your mommy's basement first.

As one of their leading proponents you are a graphic example of the GOPs ongoing slow suicide.

There will only be one reason I'll vote for the Fourth Reich to retain power, Pooplet, and that is if they have so fouled our Nation that I want Rudey Ghouliania or the Mitten Man to inherit the mess. By the end of the first term, any of the three you mention would be mumbling in the fetal position in the center of the Oval office ("I am the EggMan" mumbles Fred, lying on the Eagle in the rug). That is how much of a God awful mess Bush and Cheney will leave to their successor.

Would I squander four years more of our Nation's freedoms, soldiers, and treasure to see the Republicans crash and burn permanently, ... perhaps even to be outlawed as a political party altogether? ... Oh yeah, ... just watch me! Be careful what you wish for Pooplet!

Hello Mr or Ms Poom---

I have a question, and a serious one. Why the absolute hatred of Hillary? I understand she espouses positions that are somewhat to the left of Ronald Reagan, but truly she is a centrist Democrat, "Chang-ki-Hillary" remarks not withstanding. I really believe this vitriol comes not from a serious study of her positions on issues, but simply because she is a woman, and in the patriarchal right-wing world, she threatens the manhood of those big tough white guys who think a woman's place should be barefoot, pregnant, and cooking them dinner.

I also recognize that you could be a female yourself....and then the hatred of Hillary becomes even sadder, because it really is a wonderful example of self-loathing. Rise up girl...you can get yourself out of the kitchen and into the boardroom!

FYI, I am not currently supporting Hillary in the primaries (torn between Obama, Richardson and Biden)...but will of course vote for her should she win the Democratic nomination. It just truly baffles me that she has become this lightning rod for right-wing hate with so little issue-oriented conversation to back the hate up.

My 2 cents....

The neocons hate Hillary NOT because of her gender. That would be too Pol. Incor. even for them.

They hate Hillary simply and solely because she is a CLINTON. They see her as the second coming of Bill Clinton. They see her as a repudiation of everything that W stands for.

In reality, she really IS "Bush Lite" - much more Bush-y than Obama or Edwards will ever be. Those two men really ARE the repudiation of everything Bush. Hillary has been in DC too long. She cowtows to the corporations, the party leadership, the Republickers, and Bush himself. Hell, she voted for the war and has voted WITH Bush's wants and wishes right down the line. Sorry, Hillary is too wishy-washy for me.

My Dear Pooplet,

If the bloodletting of the Republicker Party in the '06 mid-terms wasn't a sign from the electorate that Bush and his party are heading for the bottom faster than the Titanic, the '08 election will be the beheading that slays the neocon agenda permanently.

"Hell, I won't vote for her...EVER."
And the loss of your vote should concern exactly WHO, pooplet?

"Factor in that the GOP has finally pulled it's head outtov it's ass..."
WRONG. The GOP continues to do whatever Bush asks of it - like trained puppydogs. They continue to follow the neocon agenda, obey the religious right's screaming, and support ideas that the majority of the nation has rejected. Like the WAR in Iraq. The GOP continues to maintain its head firmly and deeply up its own ass.

Fred has no chance. Milton (Mitt) is unelectable. Rudy is your only hope - which shows how desperate the Republicker Party really is.

I'm no fan of Hillary - to me she's nothing more than Bush Lite. Obama and Edwards are the ones who will dismantle everything Bush. THEY are the ones you should be afraid of.

Many liberals are against large-scale immigration, as responses to previous HuffPost pro-immigration essays has shown.
These aspects of immigration are seldom discussed: increased health and education demand; more population growth leading to a greater energy crisis, more water shortages, and more traffic congestion; illegal immigrants have high birth rates and low education desires; and illegals tend to be unquestioning Catholics or evangelicals. Hardly anything for liberals to get excited about, except for the irrational do-gooders willing to destroy the US to "save the world", and the pro-Latino-at-all-cost types who have given up on the idea that Hispanic nations will ever successfully govern themselves. themselves.

It's all cyclical but I'll tell you this-

If the Pubs align themselves with the waning US religious fundamentalists that is a sure recipe for suicide.

Even though these fundamentalists elected "W" twice you can audibly hear their death rattle.

As religious fundamentalism grows globally in the US it has run its course. We are finally seeing their hypocrisy and growing up.

One sign of this is THEIR interest in a candidate who represents their self rightous bigoted views. They might even try to run an "Independent Christian Conservative Candidate" which can do nothing but further hurt the Republicans who are is deep trouble already- VERY DEEP TROUBLE

Poor Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich- Their conservative revolution has run its course- Its demise hastened by the completely incompetent two term repubican president- George W. Bush.

Progressives need 60 SEATS in the US Senate; now, we have 49. Currently, we are NOT in the driver's seat. We have MUCH work to do in '08; we have a CHANCE to get to 60 next year. 60. 60. 60. Let's get to work, and not blow it. Then, Reid and Pelosi will have OUR majority, and we'll work toward a sustainable and peaceful future.

A quibble: Democrats have 50 seats in the Senate (51 is you count Lieberman, which I don't). Progressives have some small percentage of that. As evidenced by the Senate's activities since they came into the majority last year. Yes, we need 60 Dems, some of whom may even be progressive. But even more we need Dems with spines. Otherwise the party will be held hostage by whatever minority of Republicans the Dems feel a need to kowtow to.

The most important outcome of the next election must be that elected representatives are accountable to voters. Senators and Representatives that continue to be servile to the President should be voted out, regardless of party affiliation. The Constitution (that which Bush called a "goddamned piece of paper")is very clear on Congressional responsibility.

I don't think we'll get 60 seats (we'd have to pick up 10 senate seats, and that's really unlikely). However, it's very likely we'll pick up 4 or 5 (maybe even 6 or 7 if it's a real blowout). Senate Republicans have far more seats they need to defend in the 2008 election cycle, and their their fundraising has been extremely poor (DSCC has an $11 million cash advantage over the NRSC).

Most likely pickups:
*New Hampshire (Sununu polling poorly against challenger Shaheen)
*Colorado (Wayne Allard retiring)
*Virginia (John Warner retiring, and the very popular former gov. Mark Warner running)

Other good pickup opportunities:
*Nebraska - If former Sen. Bob Kerrey runs (Chuck Hagel's retiring) there's a very good chance of a pickup in a very red state.
*Maine - Susan Collins with her strong support of Bush and the war will have a tough re-election, and has strong contender in Tom Allen, and Maine is trending blue
*Minnesota - Either Franken or Cirisi have a good shot at taking out Norm Coleman

Even places like Idaho and Texas are now in play. The longer Sen. Craig stays, the better the changes for Democratic senate candidate Larry LaRocco. Sen. Cornyn has poor re-elect numbers in Texas, and Democratic senate candidate and Afghanistan war vet Rick Noriega has had excellent early fundraising.

Then if Democrats can recruit good candidates, there's more opportunities: McConnell is very unpopular in KY. AK Sen. Ted Stevens is drowning in corruption and an FBI investigation that includes both him and his son. Gordon Smith's support for the war is dragging him down in Oregon. NM's Pete Domenici's increasingly seen as needing to retire, and he was tainted by the firing of US attorney's scandal.

Well, Repubs are placing all their eggs in the "U.S. will never elect Hillary" basket, but the US elected Bill C. twice, and in his Hillary campaign support he will make any Repub candidate look ridiculous, especially with the W albatross hanging around the Repub candidate's neck. Repubs won't be able to separate from W, because they rubber-stamped him and now obstruct any efforts to change his anti-Constitution policies.

Since when has being against illegal immigration been a republican only thing? Last time I checked in the media and papers both democrats and republicans were against illegal immigration (which is not the same as legal immigration. Anyone with the ability to reason should understand this).

I consider myself a dem and I fully support laws that stop illegal immigration and that enforce our immigration laws. This has to be the the biggest if only thing I agree with when it comes to the republicans. Granted they are only doing it to gain favor with their base however the desire to stop it is there all the same. The law is the law and it isn't right that people that cross over the border illegally (knowingly. It isn't as they stumbled across by accident.) or over stay their visas should be given a free ride. They should face the consequences of their actions. Stop illegal immigration and business will have to increase wages because they know the won't have the cheap labor and know that American citizens won't take the jobs for so little. It will force the business owners hands. For small business, give them tax breaks and take them away from the large corps, they don't need them.

I don't care if they have children that were born in the US. The child didn't ask to be born here, they used that child as a tool to stay in the US. It's sad but they should go as well. If deporting all the illegals isn't possible then stop anymore from coming in. There is a very simple way of doing that too. Simply put the US Army along the border and keep them there. Open up new bases along the border so they can better protect and watch.

I'm sorry but on the illegal immigration front Americans should be first. I really don't see how the GOP's stance on this is ending up a bad thing. Not once have I ever seen the GOP in the media say they are against "legal immigration".

Mr. Edsall, it was Ross Perot who helped Clinton elected in 1992 by siphoning off many GOP voters to his Reform party.

Songs, Buchanan and Robertson had nothing to do it with it. What a bunch of crap.

Whats killing the GOP is a combination of things, for starters the GOP is running on a corporate platform which is horribly anti-working class and is driving folks away. Then there is the Iraq war which is a political killer.

As for offending blacks and Mexicans they've been doing that for decades. They know there is no chance either group will vote for them no matter what so why kiss their asses?

Ross Perot did not receive enough votes in any state to change the Electoral College outcome.

Perot received as many Democratic votes as he did Republican.

Please tell me why Dems are HELPING Repugnantcans by screaming publicly: you need to correct your course and welcome Latinos and Blacks??? Don't we have enough to do to save our party and the country w/o helping those insatiables who already have too much power?
