And What's Worse Than A Nagging Housewife?

stumbleupon :And What's Worse Than A Nagging Housewife?   digg: And What's Worse Than A Nagging Housewife?   reddit: And What's Worse Than A Nagging Housewife?   del.icio.us: And What's Worse Than A Nagging Housewife?

2007-10-01-TothemoonAlice.JPGSeriously, let me know if it's me. But I keep finding sexist Hillary Clinton bashing everywhere I turn. Like this from Maureen Dowd's latest column:

Others do not underestimate her relentlessness. As Leon Wieseltier, the literary editor of The New Republic, once told me: "She's never going to get out of our faces. ... She's like some hellish housewife who has seen something that she really, really wants and won't stop nagging you about it until finally you say, fine, take it, be the damn president, just leave me alone."

Damn, not a hellish housewife! They're the WORST. Man, can you imagine if one got to be PRESIDENT?

You know, I have no problem with Hillary-bashing — on the merits. Get her on her record, get her on her substance, get her on her health plan, get her on her Iraq war vote. Go crazy. But today the NYT has stooped in two places to zeroing in her with criticisms that turn completely on the fact that she's a woman. "The Cackle?" So would never be applied to a man. We all know it. (And yes, to be sure I actually Googled "Giuliani" and "cackle" and there are definitely some results, because cackling is not only the provence of women, and in these instances the word is being used by protective Ron Paul supporters, so grain of salt. But when a man is said to cackle it is a far more specific type of sound and behavior, and for a man's laugh to be termed "The Cackle" it would really have to actually have a specific sound. Hillary's actual laugh is described as being "a hearty belly laugh" with "fullness and depth" — hardly the "harsh" and "sharp" sound that Merriam Webster describes a cackle as being.)

2007-10-01-WickedWitchoftheWest.JPGAnd now Dowd — ever the sista — jumps on the bandwagon, eschewing substantive commentary for a glib turn of phrase (I'd guess that Maureen Dowd has probably "sashayed" just as often as Hillary Clinton). In her view, longevity = "relentlessness" (so watch it, any woman who's had the temerity to be in an industry for longer than a decade, moving up's a bitch and apparently so are you). It's just not enough to ground a column on nepotism — it tells us nothing we don't already know (Wow, Bill and Hill are married? And they help and support each other publicly? You don't say!). It gets interesting anytime Dowd starts talking about the discipline of the campaign — the softening rationale behind the laugh, the rumored tit-for-tat deal with GQ — but the analysis behind it is sadly lacking. Instead, we get "from nag to wag," and the dismissal of Hillary as being the mere byproduct of Bill (with no nod, of course, to however she may have contributed to her husband's earlier ascendancy). It's just glib, vague criticism which could well be true but certainly is not for her having proved it (and a supporting quote from a frequent go-to doesn't cut it). That would be troubling on its own, but the nagging housewife riding on her husband's coattails imagery — a compound stereotype for your reading pleasure! — well, that takes it from insubstantial to irresponsible.

The NYT should know better than this, can do better than this, especially in an election with the first female candidate. If Hillary Clinton is so awful — fine, great. Go ahead and prove it — on the merits. A good argument should need nothing else.

Is it sexist to say how much I love you Rachel Sklar? Sigh. You're dreamy (and you're right about HRC, even though I'm an Obama guy).

.)An interesting juxtaposition, that photo of America's archetypal villainess, The Wicked Witch of the West. By the way, did you know that before she started acting in movies like the Wizard of Oz, Margaret Hamilton used to be a kindergarten teacher? Maybe that's why Hillary talks to us as if we were a bunch of grade schoolers.
The other photo, of The Honeymooners is intriguing with its sardonic analogy between
Hillary and Alice Kramden. But you may remember that it was Ralph who did all the yellin'. "You're going to the Moon!" As
brilliantly portrayed by Audrey Meadows, Alice
was not so much a nagging wife as a realist, as she tried to pull the hapless Ralph down to earth, which given The Great One's considerable girth was no mean feat.
Scenes we'd like to see would include not Hil but Laura in a 50s style house dress and when
her hubby tells her of his plans, to, oh I don't know, invade Iran, she could say, "Oh,
just another one of your hare-brained schemes!" When he dresses up in a flight suit and stands under a "mission accomplished" banner, Laura/Alice could give him one of her trademark derisive laughs: "Har-de-har-har."And just as Jackie Gleason was often intimidated by his boss down at the
bus company, George/Ralph could say, "Hammanana, Hammana, uh, I'm sorry, Mr. Cheney." Who would be cast as Ed Norton though? (I mean, now that Karl Rove is gone

Let me get this straight. Because some media personnel have refered to Hillary's laugh as a cackle, and the wicked witch cackled then they are the same for purposes of drawing conclusions. Because the are the same, i.e. the cackle, and one was a kindergarten teacher it explains something about the other's behavior.

Is the the conclusion you were drawing?

oh i'm quick on the trigger
with targets not much bigger
than a pinpoint i'm number one
but when it comes to the fellas
i'm lower than a cellar 'cause
i can't git a man with gun
from Annie Get Your Gun

So. Let me tell DodoModo how to get a man. First and foremost, please try to buy some more attractive clothes than you already have, although please don't model yourself on the very tasteless hag, Man Coulter. Ughh. Next, high yourself away to the spa, not the salon, and get the full spa treatment for the next month or so. Then, try to submerge that harridan personality of yours, along with the thought that you are God's gift to man, because you've already proven you're not. Ditch the brains, aiight? Ditch 'em girlfriend, because men do not want to admire you for your brain, nor do they want you shoving your brains in their face. Men want to feel important and needed, stoked and stroked, because really, they're very fragile things and we all know this. Besides, when you get to be your age it's really not so important anymore that you've got balls as a woman. The time for that has long since passed. What you want now is a hot body to keep you warm this winter and you can have that. Now, get your best wiggle on(i know you don't have much of a butt) wear your best gel bra or whatever egg chested women have to wear to look like they have some chest, and get your groove on. Oh, and get yourself some sexy black music to put on the stereo, some Maxwell, or Smokey. Now, the next time you manage to coral some man forget who you were. Become the sex kitten, be all soft and feminine, laugh at everything little thing he says, make him feel like a man. Well. Give it your best shot. Oh, and one last thing, check your laugh. If you have a cackle, or your laugh is not that attractive, just smile.

Dowd gave up veracity in favor of her own special brand of "wit" a long time ago. She's too clever by half. Who takes her seriously anymore? She's little more than a gossip columnist these days, the NYT's answer to Cindy Adams.

What's worse than a nagging housewife? Maybe a bitchy witch with her own little column? Why doesn't Chris Matthews invite Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich on together and then the 3 of them can have a good old Hillary slamming time together?

If you listen to "Hardball" you would hardly know there are any Republicans seeking their nomination or that there was anyone except Hillary for the Dems.

When I saw the post..."Nothing's worse than a nagging housewife", I thought: I just read that somewhere, and it really, really bothered me. Let me read this blog and refresh my memory. Aah, Maureen Dowd. How in the world did that woman get to where she is? Reading that article made me sick: I felt like I was back in high school with the mean girls. And every time I see Maureen Dowd speak, I get this whiff of middle school ego drama. Not that a book entitled Are Men Necessary? wouldn't uplift the discourse of this desperate society. My question is:
Are many of Maureen's Op-Eds Necessary?
Why would she takes up a Sunday Op-Ed in such a crucial point in our history to merely repeat the most inane, unoriginal, long-time right-wing spin--during a week when HOW MANY OTHER INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT THINGS OCCURRED IN OUR CONGRESS, OUR SCHOOLS, OUR FARMS, OUR TOWNS, IN IRAQ, IN BURMA, IN AFGHANISTAN, IN THE CONGO,IN SUDAN?
Who is Maureen Dowd? She writes for the NYT, but her columns often belong in Cosmo. She has an Op-Ed today...Wed....on Blackwater. It may be decent, but I doubt it will have any real spark of original, courageous thought. I will still hear the drawl of that 7th grader.
And for those who think Hillary just rode her husband's coattails....Unbelievable! Have you ever actually read the story of that woman?
I do not agree and have disliked many of Clinton's policies, and that and only THAT should be what we talk about in this middle-school of a MSM country.

HumanitiesProf - you nailed it. She is one of the mean girls in high school. On another thread I mentioned that I grew up with girls like her and then I went on at length. Had I my wits about me I'd have summed up as you did. She really does remind one of the mean girls in high school. 'nuff said. Thanks.

Hillary as president would be much worse...she will sell out American Freedom and prosperity just as Bill and george have.
Kucinich is the only candidate who has consistently done what is good for the American people and does no triangulation ever.

What's worse?

A SHITTY, DESTRUCTIVE PRESIDENT LIKE GEO. W BUSH.

Maybe you've bothered to notice??

Are all you pro-Clinton people shell-shocked from the bush/cheney bullshit machine, or what? You want the country to settle for eight years of competent democratic neo-con leadership after eight years of incompetent republican neo-con leadership. NEO-CON IS NEO-CON. The Secretary of Defense won't be a stumble bum like Rumsfield. He or she will be a stumble bum like McNamara. The Secretary of State will not be a schlemele like Connie. He or she will be a schlemele like Albright. The rich will not get richer under demo-neo-con as they have under pub-neo-con but guaranteed: the rich will get richer.

And oh yeah, I almost forgot about Iran/Iraq. Pre-supposing that Cheney/Bush cross the line into more nightmares does anyone doubt that Clinton won't continue the policies of Bush/Cheney to make a point that she can be tough as nails and mass-murder with the best of them. Let's face it now: she likes Joe Lieberman and is probably going to be getting advice from him. Who can forget what she didn't do to help Mr. Lamont in Connecticutt?

This is what we suffered for: another religious nut President who belongs in a psychiatrist's office not the Oval Office.

a stoke of genius! creating the image of hillary as a relentlessly nagging, cackling housewife should strike fear in every american male. no self respecting man could vote for her now. her campaign is over. thank god. the world is saved!

You have to be supremely obtuse not to recognize the full spectrum media bashing of Hillary as a WOMAN, not as a politician. It seems that anytime any of the male commentators opens his mouth about her, something either overtly or subtly misogynistic spurts out.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:46 PM on 10/02/2007

Hillary has gotten a free ride throughout the campaign. Men, candidates and news commentators, can't attack her because they would be perceive as beating up a woman. She has used this to her advantage from the git go.

I agree with the Rachel Sklar.

As a transgendered person, I could never grasp the stereotypes that others are always playing on. I haven't the faintest idea why Humor towards Hillary would be more specific to her gender.

To be honest, I don't really consider most of what passes as 'political humor' to even be funny. It's mostly people making stupid comments and observations that have been made throughout human history.

The only stuff I like is when Bush is compared to a chimp, except that I truly feel that the chimps are being done an injustice.

What's worse than a nagging housewife? Let's see, someone who wants to be president but is either 1/too stupid to have seen through george bush's lies and thus voted to give him carte blanche to decimate a country, meaning Iraq; or 2/someone who's too politically craven and venal to vote AGAINST something as deadly serious--literally--as a war, thinking it would hurt her chances down the road to make history. So, yeah, I can bash Hillary--on the merits. If she can't take the bashing, sexist or not, then get out of the race (please, dear God, let this be the case)....
