And What's Worse Than A Nagging Housewife?

2007-10-01-TothemoonAlice.JPGSeriously, let me know if it's me. But I keep finding sexist Hillary Clinton bashing everywhere I turn. Like this from Maureen Dowd's latest column:

Others do not underestimate her relentlessness. As Leon Wieseltier, the literary editor of The New Republic, once told me: "She's never going to get out of our faces. ... She's like some hellish housewife who has seen something that she really, really wants and won't stop nagging you about it until finally you say, fine, take it, be the damn president, just leave me alone."

Damn, not a hellish housewife! They're the WORST. Man, can you imagine if one got to be PRESIDENT?

You know, I have no problem with Hillary-bashing — on the merits. Get her on her record, get her on her substance, get her on her health plan, get her on her Iraq war vote. Go crazy. But today the NYT has stooped in two places to zeroing in her with criticisms that turn completely on the fact that she's a woman. "The Cackle?" So would never be applied to a man. We all know it. (And yes, to be sure I actually Googled "Giuliani" and "cackle" and there are definitely some results, because cackling is not only the provence of women, and in these instances the word is being used by protective Ron Paul supporters, so grain of salt. But when a man is said to cackle it is a far more specific type of sound and behavior, and for a man's laugh to be termed "The Cackle" it would really have to actually have a specific sound. Hillary's actual laugh is described as being "a hearty belly laugh" with "fullness and depth" — hardly the "harsh" and "sharp" sound that Merriam Webster describes a cackle as being.)

2007-10-01-WickedWitchoftheWest.JPGAnd now Dowd — ever the sista — jumps on the bandwagon, eschewing substantive commentary for a glib turn of phrase (I'd guess that Maureen Dowd has probably "sashayed" just as often as Hillary Clinton). In her view, longevity = "relentlessness" (so watch it, any woman who's had the temerity to be in an industry for longer than a decade, moving up's a bitch and apparently so are you). It's just not enough to ground a column on nepotism — it tells us nothing we don't already know (Wow, Bill and Hill are married? And they help and support each other publicly? You don't say!). It gets interesting anytime Dowd starts talking about the discipline of the campaign — the softening rationale behind the laugh, the rumored tit-for-tat deal with GQ — but the analysis behind it is sadly lacking. Instead, we get "from nag to wag," and the dismissal of Hillary as being the mere byproduct of Bill (with no nod, of course, to however she may have contributed to her husband's earlier ascendancy). It's just glib, vague criticism which could well be true but certainly is not for her having proved it (and a supporting quote from a frequent go-to doesn't cut it). That would be troubling on its own, but the nagging housewife riding on her husband's coattails imagery — a compound stereotype for your reading pleasure! — well, that takes it from insubstantial to irresponsible.

The NYT should know better than this, can do better than this, especially in an election with the first female candidate. If Hillary Clinton is so awful — fine, great. Go ahead and prove it — on the merits. A good argument should need nothing else.

This is just bullshit! Of course there are idiots who can't imagine voting for a woman but there are many reasons why intelligent people of both genders are against Hillary Clinton and the most important one is that she is a neocon in liberal clothing ready to start world war 3 for the israeli lobby.

"...the most important one is that she is a neocon in liberal clothing ready to start world war 3 for the israeli lobby."

You're absolutely correct, in my view. Whenever we hear somebody talking about Hillary in the positive Or the negative we have a duty to speak up about her voting record and the policies and positions she's held. It's the only way we're going to keep her out of the oval office.

I will never vote for Clinton, not because she is a 'nag' but because she gave the moron Bush authority to invade Iraq.

Here are 4 reasons I do not, and will not, support Hillary Clinton for president:

1) She voted to authorize an unnecessary war in Iraq which has killed thousands, and offers no apologies for doing so.

2) She presided over the health-care plan fiasco and is intent on leading us down that path again, whether we like it or not.

3) She has aligned herself closely with corporate interests, much like our current president.

4) She voted to label Iran's Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization that must be stopped, in accordance with the wishes of the White House and Joe Lieberman.

Maureen Dowd is indeed a vastly overrated hack-- a latter-day Louella Parsons with a dash of Dorothy Parker manqué.

But JimR gives at least four good reasons for eschewing President Hillary, who is indeed Holy Joe Lieberman with bigger tits. And I don't care if Hillary's laugh echoes the song of the nightingale.

Great idea, so you by doing this you will help get Giuliani in office and instead of Hillary buddying up with corporate cronies and starting world war III you'll get Rudy doing so. Instead of Hillary having supported the Iraq war after being lied to, we'll have Rudy who still supports it knowing what we did not know then. Wow, that does make a huge difference. But aside from that, we'll have Rudy appointing conservative justices who will overturn Roe; who will assign us a national language; who will construct a theocracy, create a healthcare system only the rich can afford, dismangle education. Hey thanks for that. Not that it will matter since we'll all be scrambling to eat roaches after the war with Iran.

You people who vow to never vote for one candidate or the other, I'm happy to say, are looking more and more ridiculous to the majority of people out here who realize the importance of this election and how your high opinions of your values could help finally smother the last of our freedoms. Enjoy your principles come roach-eatin'-time.

Republicans will NEVER let Roe be overturned. It's the possibility that they might "someday" be able to overturn it that gets their base to the polls, it's their rallying cry. They would be screwed without it, and they know it.

As for healthcare, we already have a system only the rich can afford and neither of them will change a damn thing.

Iran....Hillary was pushing this long before Rudy entered the picture.

This country is in bad shape. We can do much better than Hillary and Rudy.

I'll add two more...

5) Hillary Clinton sat on the executive board of Wal-Mart for eight years. Wal-Mart is the most predatory and anti-democratic corporation we've seen in America since the bad old days of Andrew Carnegie, and I can't imagine that a woman who worked for such a misogynist company for so many years can be trusted to protect women's rights.

6) As first lady, she spent a large amount of energy decrying the changes to bankruptcy. "That Awful Bill," she called it. In her first senatorial cycle she took Major cash from credit card companies and banks, and then promptly voted for "That Awful Bill." Hillary Clinton can not be trusted when money's on the line.

What are you talking about.
Everyone know only poor people work hard to pay all their bills.
Good Republicans take bankruptize regularly. Walking away with $200,000 or $300,000 in goods every 6 years will make you rich too.

"Instead, we get "from nag to wag," and the dismissal of Hillary as being the mere byproduct of Bill (with no nod, of course, to however she may have contributed to her husband's earlier ascendancy)."

So you think she would be were she is right now without him? She *is* a byproduct of Bill. She is riding his coattails to the White House. She contributed to his success by not divorcing his cheating ass when she should have. She's worse than a nagging wife. She's a spineless woman who couldn't or wouldn't leave a serial philanderer. And is using him to get into the White House.

This is not the sort of person I want as my president. And definitely not the sort of woman we should be elevated to the highest office in the land. I want someone with guts. She ain't it. I want a woman who isn't leaning on her man to get her places. The woman the sprang quickest to mind is Ann Richards. Alas, she is no longer with us.

The Us deserves a woman in the White House who can get there on her own. Who has proven by years of her own public service, she knows how to win elections on her own. Hillary has been elected to just one office. She lacks the first hand experience of winning and losing. She has no real comprehension how to lead, since she has never done that in her life. She has always been a follower. If it weren't for her husband's name she wouldn't be in the Senate now. Neither would she be trying for the White House. She is not running on her own accomplishments, but rather those of her husband's. That sound like an independent woman to you?

Can it be only coincidence that the other right wing newspaper in Bos-Wash is the Washington TIMES? Judith Cheney (or whatever she called herself) was fired, but they still have her compadre on board, along with Tom Friedman. While Maureen trashed Democratic candidates, Judith lied in the runup to the war, and Tom has been a cheerleader for the war.

I confess considerable satisfaction that no one was willing to pay for Tom & Maureen's columns. Hope no one reads them now that they are free.

One thing that keeps resonating with me - men have screwed things up so badly - why not give a woman a chance ?

No, we save "The Scream" for men. Sorry, this is stupid. Did you forget about Governor Dean already?

Instead of writing about Ms. Dowd, why don't you write a piece on why Hillary should be president. List all the reasons SHE is the best candidate. What has SHE done? How will SHE change and unite the country? Seriously, I have yet to hear anyone answer these questions.

Thank you for writing this up - I have been stunned by the amount of Hillary bashing in the media that goes unchallenged and is lacking any substance. What ever you think about Hillary as President, her candidacy has exposed the press as something akin to the He Man Woman Haters Club - with all the maturity that implies.

Maureen Dowd is a hack of the first order. She's shallow, snarky and certainly not smart. Barely post-adolescent in her thinking.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:02 PM on 10/01/2007

Agreed. The column was a lazy recycling of her previous columns about Billary.

But I don't expect more from Modo at this point. Lots of people just eat up her brand of snark. And what's the NYT going to do about her lack of substance? Fire her? Dream on.

Yes. Dowd's arrogant pretense to intelligent commentary over the years has rarely failed to be irritating. Her snarky take downs of Gore still smart. She repeats this in her "coverage" of Edwards. Her feminist, modern-woman posing is consistently undercut by her petty, adolescent, misogynistic hackery.

And let me say how tired I am of those who use any mention of Hillary in H. Post to repeatedly declare that they absolutely will not vote for her. So what. We get it. Move on.
