Majority Opposes Bush's $190 Billion War Funding Request

Most Americans oppose fully funding President Bush's $190 billion request for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and a sizeable majority supports an expansion of a children's health insurance bill the president has promised to veto, putting Bush and many congressional Republicans on the wrong side of public opinion on upcoming foreign and domestic policy battles.

The new Washington Post-ABC News poll also shows deep dissatisfaction with the president and Congress. Bush's approval rating stands at 33 percent, equal to his career low in Post-ABC polls. Congressional aproval is even lower: Just 29 percent approve of the job the Congress is doing. That is Congress's lowest approval rating in this poll since November 1995, when Republicans controlled both the House and Senate, and represents a 14-point drop since Democrats took control last January.

Well, you are right in one respect, because it does not matter, but thnat is due to the fact that the U.S. is a constitutional republic and not a democracy in thbe pure sense, thank goodness. Does that mean Bush is not a fool? Of course not. Does it mean we ought to throw the baby out with the bathwater and alter the Constitution? No, we should not, and suggestions to the contrary are uninformed.

oh for gods sake would you get off that load of crap about this being a constitutional republic and not a democracy as though that is some sort of excuse for you to believe that's it is perfectly okay for there to be a de facto dictatorship in this country?

the founders were VERY clear that was *not* their intent, and the whole reason behind the need for a constitutional republic had to do with nothing more than the sheer size of the place they were dealing with.

go back and read the federalist and anti-federalist papers. you are clearly clueless.

oh, and just for your own edification, there hasn't been a PURE democracy on the face of the earth since the days of ancient athens for the pure and simple reason that it is unworkable on a large scale. hence the decision by the founders to have what they termed a constitutional republic.

goddamn i am so tired of people using words they don't comprehend.

$190 billion divided by 300 million Americans. That's $2,533.33 per family of four. Added to the approximately $10,000 already borrowed on behalf of this family of four for the war, times 9%, and the annual bill for each citizen (not each taxpayer) to service this debt (without paying any principal back to China) is $1,128 FOREVER. That means for those two-income families with two kids, with each spouse earning the average US wage of around $37,000 per year ($185 gross per workday), that if they begin devoting 100% of their gross pay to pay this debt on the first work day of 2008, then they will finish paying for their family's 2008 share of the Iraq War burden on January 17th, 12 work days into 2008. At this rate, it will take each of these two working Americans one MORE work day each year just to SERVICE THE DEBT on the war. Or you can look at it this way: each day, the entire first half-hour you are at work, you are working for the war, every workday of the entire year. And the Bush administration is taking this money from you and pissing it away on palettes of $100 bills delivered to Baghdad and handed out willy-nilly. It is spent on Blackwater mercenaries and KBR sandwich makers. It is spent on boosting the value of Dick Cheney's stock options. It is stolen from you and stolen from your children. Now, either get to work and shut up, or get to work and do something about it.

More money? Sorry Mr. President, there isn't any left. All that surplus you inherited in 2000, well, sir, you squandered it all away. Might be time, sir, for you to get a real job, and start saving.

Isn't it amazing how this nation believes it is spreading "democracy" in this world, while those who are "elected" in this nation attempt to destroy "democracy" with every breath they take? We are not "serfs" – yet…but that's not because there isn't a grand effort to make us so.
Am I the only one who wonders how it is that the stock market can reach new heights, when so many more of us reach new financial lows? Could it be on the backs of those who are working for the "man" beyond our shores? What a grand system we have here...the corporations bleed this nation and its people dry to the bone through their credit scams, yet are profitable beyond their wildest dreams because the slavery that was outlawed in this nation is theirs for the taking because they have been gifted with corporations without boundaries.
Where is a Theodore Roosevelt when we really need one?

let's try this again.

the stock market question is an interesting one.

something that has been conspicuous by its absence in our msm is the fact that bernanke's recent interest rate CUT sent the cost of oil and gas futures skyrocketing. the cut was made at a time when under NORMAL circumstances an increase would have been made to stabilize the rocky credit markets, and thus bolster the value of our own currency.

checked the price of crude lately? up over $80 per barrel. natural gas futures set for november delivery? $7 per MMBtu. both new records.

just wait until you get your bill for heating your home this winter! woohoo! it's going to be Christmas every day for the oil companies! nothing but oceans and oceans of increasingly obscene profits......

and that my friend, should at least help solve the mystery of the recent market run-ups, when by all normal markers, it should have gone down.

we are indeed living in strange times.

"The majority," if I may dare to ask, "of exactly whom?"

If you merely mean "the American people," as the Washington Post may suggest, then, "why, who gives a damn about 'the people?' This is BUSINESS, my good man! And when it comes to matters of BUSINESS, why, we shall TELL THEM what to 'think!'"

"The Constitution? The CONSTITUTION? Pshaw! 'Tis but 'a god*amned piece of paper!'"

Ahem...

When a business is making hundreds of billions of dollars from "the war," and especially when $12 trillion (plus!) of oil is "still in play," this cadre of businessmen FRANKLY DOES NOT [THINK THAT IT HAS TO] GIVE A DAMN WHAT 'YOU' THINK.

And this, as "WE THE PEOPLE" all know, is precisely where these criminals have (finally and irretrievably) screwed up.

But... we have to tell them so. No, we have to smear their face in it. We have to FORCE(!) their pasty, gold-smacked minds "to dimly consider" that they might actually be out-numbered, 320 million to one.

Very good points. The People have made their opinion known on this issue, repeatedly, and so the article offers no real news value. The only thing that matters is that the majority in Congress opposes it.

I'm still waiting to see the Congressional courage.

More Bad news for the repubes:

Bad For Business: Execs And Managers Bolting GOP
The Wall Street Journal | JACKIE CALMES | October 1, 2007 09:33 PM

The Republican Party, known since the late 19th century as the party of business, is losing its lock on that title.

New evidence suggests a potentially historic shift in the Republican Party's identity -- what strategists call its "brand." The votes of many fiscal conservatives and other lapsed Republicans are now up for grabs, which could alter U.S. politics in the 2008 elections and beyond.

The photo illustrating this post is from a "puny" antiwar demonstration in Washington, D.C. on September 15. There was another "punier" antiwar demonstration this past Saturday, in Washington, D.C., where protesters shut down two major arteries near the Capitol FOR SEVERAL HOURS. Police chose not to intervene, so no arrests, no reporting (hmm with the Burma demonstrators, had to show restraint here, at least for now).

Well, the Democrats were given control of the Congress to stop the war in Iraq. Thus far, they have refused to do so, continue to give Bush-Cheney Corp. all the funding they want, and from what I can understand have no time-table to exit Iraq. The only exception seems to be Dennis Kucinich. He voted against the war from the beginning and has voted 100% of the time not to fund it. At least he is consistent! In my book he is the only one who has credibility, oh but he's not handsome enough to be President right?! Wake up people!...

The only solution is to stop funding the war and bring all of our troops back home. Then the international community would be willing to help Iraq stabilize and rebuild.

After our troops are home and out of harmes-way, a resolution to the Israel/Palestine issue needs to be put on the front burner. It's simple: force Israel to withdraw completely to its pre 1967 borders so a Palestinian state that is contiguous and has East Jerusalem as its capitol can be created - where its citizens would have full control over their economy, water, borders and airspace. The entire world sees this as the only FAIR solution to this political problem - except, of course, the US and Israel.

Stop funding the war, bring our troops home and take a fair and balanced approach to the Middle-East. It's the only logical solution.
