Mayor's Reporter Girlfriend Quits Station After Demotion To Far-Flung Bureau

Los Angeles television newscaster Mirthala Salinas, whose affair with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa prompted her transfer to Riverside, failed to show up for her first day of work today after a two-month suspension. A few hours later, Salinas' employer, the Spanish-language Telemundo network, announced that she would not be returning.

Salinas and Telemundo executives were negotiating an end to her employment as a network spokesman, Alfredo Richard, said: "She will not be coming back."

Oh, we unsophisticated Inland Empire rubes can't offer you the tres chic-ness of Lost Angeles or the carefully-­constructe­d, upper-crust ambience of The People's Republic Of Irvine (and the rest of South Orange County), but Riverside is by no means a howling wilderness!

The inland empire is a fine media market to work with but most reporters there are looking to move up to the LA market (bigger audience=bigger bucks) but for Salinas that move up is unavailable to her.

I am guessing that what she is angling for is a spot as an 'entertainment reporter' on something like E! or Access Hollywood for the hispanic or bilingual market. Who you are sleeping with is less of an issue there as you are mostly just framing the paparazzi pics and parroting the publicity releases.

One of the main reasons why a reporter would regard the Inland Empire to be such a huge step down is that you are just a little bit too far away to work the rest of the entertainment industry. Things like doing a voiceover gig in the evening or a celebrity appearance at some trade show, or just meeting with your agent.
