2007-10-01-obama.jpgThe Huffington Post has learned that Senator Barack Obama, D-IL, raised a total of $20 million during the third quarter fundraising period, $19 million of which can be used for the primary election.

The money represents a decrease from the $33 million he raised during the second quarter period, but is believed to match the total raised by his primary rival for the Democratic nomination, Senator Hillary Clinton, D-NY.

Obama's fundraising was aided by approximately 93,000 new donors who contributed to the campaign during the past three months. The decline in the money total was attributed to the traditionally slow fundraising months of July and August.

To date, the Obama campaign has raised more than $78 million, nearly $75 million of which is slated for the primary election. In addition, more than 350,000 people have donated to Obama since he announced his presidential candidacy.

FRED's numbers are only 20% below Sadsacks! Wow! He raised 5 mil in 24 days. $200,000 a day since entering the race. Go FRED GO!

A lot of the money he's raised no doubt comes from Repugnicans in the hopes that we would be stupid enough to run with a black man in this racist society.

Ya right! You are the racist one since you were able to come up with it. The so called racist people are very few.

We all have our biases and preferences but the kind of racism you allude to is dead to many.

Don't be surprised if he is elected President. It is because America is not as backwards as you think.

Hillary beat him.

The media has been intoning that Hillary has beaten Obama for the past 2 quarters as they added her money (on hand) to make her overall figures higher. The facts are that this is the 1st quarter that Hillary actually outraised Obama, however it can hardly be considered great news when the media has fudged the facts to create the appearance she was doing better than she [was].

Fuji,

She beat Obam by accepting money from lobbyists, right? How many new donors did she receive, that is the question!

She receive quite a lot this time around considering the fact that all those who played the lottery to go eat chips and watch TV with Bill Clinton were counted.

I wonder how many of those who donated to Obama know that he hasn't been showing up recently whenever a vote comes up on funding the Iraq war. He skipped today's vote and was nowhere to be found last Thursday.

Very mature. Isn't Iraq Obama's signature issue? Doesn't he keep reminding us how he would have voted on the IWR if he had been in the Senate? Doesn't he keep telling us how he would end this war? He's my senator and I expect him to at least be in the Senate when votes on Iraq are being taken.

BTW, Obama wasn't the only one who was a no-show. Clinton, Biden, Dodd, and McCain also did not vote. I guess the thinking is, no vote - no critcism. What an example of leadership from all of them!

Obama has reached a surge in getting funds from thousands of people because of his exposure and support of Ophra Winfrey. I think this will be a one time surge and I do not belive it will continue. I like Obama but I do not think he has the experience nor the polish to be President yet. It is not his time. Wait until after the next President serves his two terms in office and Obama will have reached his time in history. I predict he will be our first black President but his time has not yet come.

Right On, talak...It was Mike Gravel who actually pointed it out during the debate, but NO ON PICKED UP ON IT...THE MSM GAVE OBAMA A PASS...AGAIN.

Where I used to think Obama was just inexperienced and a political opportunist, I now think he is a VERY EXPERIENCED POLITICAL OPPORTUNIST...AND a COWARD and a HYPOCRITE... MOST DEFINITELY NOT A TRUSTWORTHY LEADER.

Notice how he's refusing to participate in any more ad hoc debates?...One might have thought that it was because it took too much time away from his Senate duties -- Obviously, THAT'S NOT the case...More likely it's because he can't be in control during a multi-candidate forum and spew his empty rhetoric unfettered...

He reminds me of one of those slick preachers ...all flash and rhetoric, and all the while with his hand out to the mesmerized masses, who succumb, glassy-eyed and dazzled by the show.

Every day, this whole thing makes me more frustrated and pissed off, and I now think of OBAMA as the most dangerous candidate...the one that we simply MUST NOT LET BE NOMINATED.

It is because she is trying to appear that she made so much$$$$ that it is taking her longer to count it.
She is just playing games. The thing she is good at doing. The bottom line, how much did she make for the primary, and how much is for the general election? And how much $$$ comes from her own money and how much comes from her lobbyists friends?

But, since I can count past 3 ("front-runners"), I still maintain that Joe BIDEN is unequivocally the most qualified and electable candidate BY FAR (ok, maybe Chris Dodd too), and Bill Richardson would be the perfect VP with a Northeastern Prez.

Fundraising Facts:

1. Money does not equal votes--The overwhelming majority of voters never contribute to political campaigns, so money does not equal voter support.

2. The Obama Campaign inflates its numbers: The SF Chronicle reported back in July that the Obama Campaign was counting purchases of $4 keychains as "donations," thus the large number of purported "donors." That's what I call "creative bookkeeping." Didn't Exxon get in trouble for that?

3. John Edwards, who supposedly "lags" in fund raising, has raised over $30 million dollars, more than Howard Dean had at this time in 2003. Dean, who broke all sorts of fund raising records, had raised only $7.5 million by this time in 2003. Most of Edwards contributions are under $100, which indicates to me, support from working families, like mine.

Go, Edwards!

Basically, he's proved himself to be a coward and a hypocrite...He cravenly chastises others for their Senate votes, claiming that he had better judgement against the 2003 Iraq vote...YET, when called upon last week as a sitting Senator to do the job he was elected to do and actually put his "aye" or "nay" where his mouth is on TWO resolutions (one regarding Iraq and one regarding Iran), he cut and ran...
to a CBC rally where he had the gall to tell his audience not to just talk...to take action...Like I said A COWARD AND A HYPOCRITE.

About your facts.

10 and 20 dollar donations DO translate into votes. That is the point. This is the first time so much has been raised by so many.

As you must know, when purchasing a campaign button, t-shirt or key chain from the campaign organization, it must be declared as a political donation. This prevents abuses like selling goods people need or want and funneling the cash into the campaign.

As for Edwards. He has made some honest statements during his campaign. I hope he can cut down on the populism, however.

Also Dean was a head in the polls for a long time and he went down in flames. I suppose that will happen to HC because the pundits have started to pick her a part and expose her flaws now.

On point #3, that's nice but this is not the 2004 race. You might as well point out how much more money this is than what Al Gore had in the 2000 race. Edwards supporters reaching back to comparisons with money in past races is truly desperate and sad. Cling to whatever hope you need, but this is the 2008 race. Obama and Hillary are blowing everyone else out of the water and will continue to do so. That Edwards suddenly decided to take public money is further evidence of his desperation, not an act of principle. If it were a principled stand Edwards would have taken public money from the very beginning and made a huge point of this contrast with Hillary and Obama. It's meaningful to unilaterally disarm if you are the guy in the #1 position. It's meaningless to disarm when you have no weapons.

We all have a problem if any candidate running second in his primary field needs to raise $20 million/quarter just to remain competitive in the race. This type of campaign spending is completely ridiculous and unnecessary. Time to fix campaign finance before the average American can no longer run for...oops, too late.

"Obama has a problem: with all that money he is not gaining on Hillary in the polls."

Polls? Who the hell cares about polls?

Polls don't get people elected. Votes do!

Dean won every single poll BAR NONE just several years ago. He had a 20+ point lead in December, weeks before the primaries. How many states did Dean win in the Democratic primary?

There are reasons why people vote. One of them is to tell the pollsters and the tv people who seem to know what is going to happen before it happens (even though most of the time they are dead wrong) to go screw themselves.

This is America. This is not the United States of NBC or the U.S. of Washington Post or Fox News. THIS IS REAL.

ALL of us get to decide who wins...Not just a few people in a random sample who chose a name that they recognize.

Regular people have given Barack a lot more money than Hillary so far. Forking over real money is a lot tougher than voting. If you want to poll something, poll the number of regular folks giving Barack less than 50 dollars.

Compare that number to what Hillary or anyone else has received.

Now, that's a real poll!

infideltexan: Empty suit is exactly what I called "No-Sh'Obama" on another thread, along with coward and hypocrite, and a definition of exactly why his candidacy is preposterous.

I guess it's easier to make all that money when you busy being a Washington "outsider" instead of being back "inside" your Washington Senate office DOING THE JOB YOU WERE ELECTED TO DO, LIKE VOTING ON IMPORTANT RESOLUTIONS, etc...

And I guess NOT VOTING on resolutions makes it easier to not be wrong and to point fingers and chastise others' votes.

It's not about Obama being black...It's about Obama being a slick but fundamentally inexperienced political opportunist, hypocrite and a coward when called to do his job and put himself on the line, on the record...

He's basically a black, albeit smart, version of GW.

And NO, I, and hopefully America, isn't ready for THAT.

If Obama can get 1000 people from a tiny, rural town in Utah to show up out of nowhere just to hear him speak (it was only supposed to be quick flight into town for Barack, perhaps a fast 30 minute meeting with a few friends that turned into a two to three hour rock concert), than YES, America is very much ready.

It's not about skin color (he's half Irish anyway...don't get forget that just because of his skin pigmentation). It's all about how EXTREMELY intelligent he is and what he will do for our country.

To be honest, something tells me that if YOU went to Utah, not only would no one show up to hear you speak, they may not truly consider YOU to be "white."

Get over it.

You can claim it is not about skin color, but reality is quite different...people can give money, say they will vote for him, but as Tavis Smiley said on Meet The Press, what people say they will do when it comes to a black candidate is very different than what they really do...
Obama lovers are in for a very sobering winter...sad to say, but it will be a slap that many will remember.
