Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson said today he was certain former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction prior to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, a point of contention in the 4.5 years since the war began.

"We can't forget the fact that although at a particular point in time we never found any WMD down there, he clearly had had WMD. He clearly had had the beginnings of a nuclear program," the former Tennessee senator told an audience of about 60 at a Newton cafe.

The question of whether Saddam had banned chemical and biological weapons, and plans to acquire nuclear weapons, has been the subject of intense debate in light of inspectors' failure to find such evidence since the war began.

Thompson made the statement while explaining why he felt the war was justified, despite the Bush administration's chief justification for the invasion turning out not to be verifiable.

Let's give Thompson the benefit of doubt for a moment. OK, so Iraq had WMDs. A problem with Thompson's statement is that the US military not only failed to find them but we didn't find the facilities required for their manufacture. These are facts. We might also ask why Iraq failed to use them if indeed they existed and then wonder what became of them. I haven't heard many rational explanationsfor these two questions.

Thompson approaches the WMD issue from the standpoint of wishful thinking. What Thompson has therefore indicated that he has no problem with developing US foreign policy based on wishful thinking rather than using facts.

One question which is always ignored by the MSM -- Who sold the WMD's to Saddam in the first place? Why, the United States of America of course!

Absolutely right. And Rummy was one of the guys involved in selling the WMD to the Iraqis and then setting on his hands while they used them on the Kurds. However, it was clear that Iraq had destroyed all stocks of WMD before idiot George decided to prove his manhood by invading the country.

Now, considering that this is Thompson making this "brilliant" statement about Iraq having WMDs, I suspect it is because he has just come out of his coma or somehow decided to read the next page of the script.

Clearly, the demand for Fred Thompson exceeds the supply.

Actually, the demand for Fred is pretty much non-existent.

Oh goody! Another Republican who doesn't read the newspapers.
Let's see - he didn't know anything about the Jena 6, wasn't aware of the Terri Schiavo case and now thinks Saddam had WMD.
Wow - ladies and gentlement I give you the next President of the United States!

If Iraq ever had WMD at any time, it was because they got them from the US government via Bush's Neocon Carlyle Group and the CIA.

This guy is so ignorant and misinformed and dangerous - he has the perfect credentials to be President of the United States. Get ready to pass the torch George W.

EspressoAtNoon - Freddy really needs a script in order to speak, and unfortunately, the ones given to him are old and purchased from a Hollywood garage sale.

So let me get this straight...Here is Saddam watching the big, bad United States banging on his door, breaking down the door. The leader of this little Middle Eastern Country loaded with oil is holding his WMD watching the enemy get closer and closer..knowing his world is about to end. But rather than use his weapons, he hides them for future use. Got it!!

And isn't it rather odd that the administration, the pentagram, and all the right whiners who believed that he had those WMDs (which he would use at the drop of a hat), never saw fit to equip the American troops that they sent into Iraq with protection from the dangers to which they would be subject if Saddam actually did use those WMDs? Sure they gave them anthrax shots, but where was the protection against radiation, or chemical attacks? Either the leaders were (a) incompetent (always a possibility), or (b) they knew from the outset there was no danger.

We had our chemical suits with protective masks, our atropine and 2-pam chloride injections in case of chemical attacks, chemical detection kits, radiological detectors, and the chemicals needed to clean ourselves and our equipment in the event of exposure to chemical agents. We had everything going in there and we carried it everywhere we went until an area was deemed threat free. Do not make claims to facts that you do not know about.

Notice we NEVER hear from "Sadaam's Bombmaker" since the invasion and our military found absolutely NO WMD's that he swore would be there. I think in the end, Sadaam got Bush into this war in his timing. The bomb maker is brobably hid out in some bunker these days so Bush does not have to worry about him. I used to worry a bit about Thompson, his age, and his zig Heil comments on TV, but alas, his brain is in a state of atrophy or he is delusional, if he still sticks to the mantra that there were WMDs in Iraq. Anyone know where Sadaam's bombmaker is these days. He seems to have disappeared from TV sets beginning with the discovery of NO WMDs.

Ok. Fred Thompson. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. but to be fair, you will have to invade this country too, as it has the "beginnings of a nuclear program"

http://www.expressindia.com/news/fullstory.php?newsid=65139

yeah, that's right. Saudi Arabia is developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and not a damn soul is mentioning this in the press.

Saudi Arabia poses a real $34 billion military threat - this is the size of their armed forces.

Saudi Arabia, a country of 27 million, spends the same amount of money on defense as Germany.

for those of you whom don't know, 82.1 million people live in Germany, and the country boasts a 2.8 trillion economy.

For Fred a "yellow cake" recipe. Fred was right -HERE IS THE YELLOW CAKE
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups cake flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs, room temperature
2 teaspoons vanilla
3/4 cup milk
PREPARATION:
Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour 2 9-inch cake pans.
In bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt with a wire whisk.

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time.
Add vanilla and mix until completely combines. Slowly add flour alternately with milk. At end of addition batter should be smooth. Divide between 2 pans.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Cool 5 minutes in pan, then invert onto a rack and cool completely before frosting.

For a 9 x 13 pan - Baked at 350 degrees F. for 30 to 38 minutes.
