Presidential Politics And The Forbes 400

A U.S. presidential campaign represents the confluence of power, influence and wealth. We cross-referenced the latest list of the 400 Richest Americans with publicly available information on their contributions to the presidential candidates. No matter how rich or poor you are, the law limits each U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident to a $2,300 direct donation to a particular candidate for the primaries, and the same amount for the general election.

Our tallies on direct contributions to the individual candidates, based on filings to the Federal Election Commission, show a fairly even political divide among America's wealthiest. As of June 30, the Republican aspirants received $332,000 in total from the Forbes 400, representing 99 contributions from individuals. The corresponding number for the Democratic candidates: $307,000 and 90 donations from individuals.
