Sean Penn appeared on "The Late Show with David Letterman" Monday night to promote "Into the Wild," which he directed and opens Friday. He also talked about his recent visit with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. He had good things to say about the controversial leader, adding "He's done incredible things for the 80% of the people who are very poor there." See the full clip below.

As a once long time but now former Republican, I applaud Sean Penn for LOOKING and THINKING for himself. He makes total sense. Good for him ...he gets out and into the real world. Fine actor but even more impressive as a humanitarian.

Chavez has oil. Anyone who has oil is a target for Bu$hco. It's really just that simple.

Good clip ... Sean's interviews are always enlightnening.

Yeah right, I am a former member of the Martian Party, I don't like their corporate ideals. Liar, liar, pants are on fire.

Thank You, Sean Penn! . You pointed out the link between oil in the ground and insanity. We have Hugo Chavez, Saddam Hussein, the Taliban, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Moammar Ghadaffi, They all have oil and every one of them is a nut job, These people are insane, dangerous, unpredictable, stupid and crazy, and their people do not support them. I wonder how they see our leaders.

the more people like Penn speak, and the more I read the posts on the site, the more I understand how Jim Jones was able to sucker all those sheep.
Penn is a total fool!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:14 PM on 10/02/2007

how he was able to sucker all those sheep? He put people in power, gave them automatic weapons, and held them (many of them) against their will. And when they finally tried to escape, they were gunned down. And then the people who refused to drink the cool aid were also gunned down. What exactly are you getting at? Your argument is made on both ends of the aisle. The whole "Kool-aid drinkers" platitude is worn out.

He allows Fox news to be broadcast there every day.

Is that fascist enough for you 44?

How long do you think Bush would allow a station on the air that calls for "his" assassination every day?

Game, set and match to "totalliberal."

But "r..44" is so clever to attack Penn by singling out his first starring role. You're right: Penn has no right to his own opinions, and a film he starred in 20 something years ago should void for the rest of his life any attempt by him to speak out.

Frankly, Jeff Spicolli would have been a better president than George Bush. Which Bush? Both of them.

Please provide us some links to prove your claim that Fox News calls for Chavez's assassination every day.

Before you attempt an 'ad hominum (character assasination);' the lowest expression used by those who have no rational common sense argument: check out "Into the Wild." It's one of the best movies of the decade.

Also check out "The Princess Bride." Sean Penn and she are married.

Now lets join our fear and war mongering president and bash "Hollywood Nalues'...whatever that means to w and the 'childrens' and voters w is trying to influence.

Way to not just "cahracter assassinate" George Bush, ya d-bag retard.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:12 AM on 10/03/2007

Boy, is this guy an idiot or what? Encouraging the assassination of Chavez every day? Maybe the other journalists who had their lives ruined for digging into the government wanted to "assassinate him" too.

I don't know how anybody can like this guy (Chavez). But, you know what they say - The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I also have to laugh at these people who say, "I would rather have Chavez than Bush." Chavez for 25 yrs, vs. Bush for 1 (left). At least in the US, people don't have their lives ruined for criticizing the government; unlike Castro-wannabe.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:40 PM on 10/02/2007

I think you have confused the idiot -- it's in your mirror. The Bush administration has made a sport out of destroying the reputation of a plethora of individuals who have revealed the many lies and distortions they have perpetrated. The laundry list begins with Valerie Plame, and it's a long list.

I really like the way Sean Penn approaches the insanity of Bush, Robertson and faux news.
He renders them impotent and irrelevant as he calmly and matter-of-factly points out that whatever they say, he believes the exact opposite.
He is a true humanitarian and Patriot

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:18 PM on 10/02/2007

He's a nitwit and a communist sympathizer.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:27 PM on 10/02/2007

Well, that means he still scores FAR BETTER than the whole hardcore base of the ultra-right-wing scumbags like Pat Robertson or, for that matter, any other lunatic evangelical nutcase.
They literally openly rally against the constitutional order, they instigate against other faith, religious and racial groups etc - these evanalgelical scumbags are against pretty much everything the US stands for and I never understood how on Earth they are exempt, why they are allowed to spew their hatred openly, without any consequences...

I am not a Venezuelan but according to the stuff I have read, Mr. Chavez is very popular. That he is with the poor is a no brainer, and I haven't heard boo from the local business community. I am only guessing, but it seems that if more people have a few bucks in their pockets, those bucks find their way into cash registers. I think its a win win in their world.

BTW Citgo is wholly owned by the nationalized and socialistic Venezuelan national oil company and their US headquarters are in Houston of all places. Its probably just me but I find that more than a little ironic. When I can't get to a Costco for gas I look for a Citgo.

PS, the writing is on the wall; South America is turning away from neo-liberalism - quite an achievement in societies that have been overwhelmingly oligarchic. Bravo!

Oh yeah, Sean Penn is one of Hollywood's best

I just don't get it. Chavez has a 80% approval rating and Bush has a 26% approval rating. Since less is more than Bush really is far, far better than Chavez. And if being a communist sympathizer means free health care and free education, using the wealth of a countries resources to aid the citizens rather than using it to let the rich get richer, where can I sign up?

I don't think dragging his personal camera crew out on a leaky boat really helped anyone. There definitely wasn't enough room on board to rescue much more than a small dog. Maybe if he wanted to really help instead of setting up a PR stunt he could have hired real rescue workers and a real boat to go down the NO or at least left the camera crew at home to make some room.

If anything his presence cause more troubles for local police and rescue workers who had to deal with a celebrity in their midst.

The camera crew recorded that the gov't, led by Brownie and Bush, did nothing while Penn was physically there helping people.

Your claim that Penn's presence caused more "troubles" for the police (who weren't there) and rescue workers (who were nowhere to be found) is laughable. You think people drowning and starving were looking for autographs? Man, are you nuts!

Oh wait, I forgot: Bush did show up like 5 days later and flew over the place at 25,000 feet. Well done, Bush!
