Against the backdrop of the 10th anniversary soiree for MSNBC's Hardball, Chris Matthews offered up his own mini-Peter Finch moment, railing at the Bush administration in remarks termed "political and pointed." After declaiming that he intended to "make some news," Matthews offered the assembled well-wishers barbed snark ("God help us if we had Cheney during the Cuban missile crisis. We'd all be under a parking lot."), fiery non-sequiturs ("Spiro Agnew was not an American hero."), and one accusatory allusion against the administration, stating, "They have finally been caught in their criminality."

Chris knows Bush and Cheney are criminals. Now if only the 'opposition' party would wake up and do their duty to impeach them.

I prefer to see them arrested for treason then outsourced/renditioned for interrogation... I really want to know what god has been telling these inept, delusional, criminal jack-asses?

While we're at it let's round-up the criminals in Congress that ignored their constitutional oathes and gave the president the power to wage war on Iraq... and again last week for Iran... clearly unconstitutional!

But what do you expect from fools that worship institutions (gov't & religion) that struggle mightily to understand simple truths like "all men are created equal". Clearly these Orwellian pigs believe their kind is more equal then others...

Chris 'socialist' Matthews does speak truth to power, which I always applaud, when it suits his socialist/democratic agenda!

Chris Matthews voted for Bush/Cheny TWICE. He waxed poetic for years on his total support for Bushco and the whole neoCON junta. Provided scum like ann coulter, tom delay, tony blankley, etc., etc., etc. with airtime to spew their filth...he just adores John McCain and, of late, misses no opportunity to express his blatant male chauvinism with his jokes about Hillary's "cackles" and air of superiority over his female guests. NOW, he sees the way the wind blows, and has decided to suck up to those who knew all along we were getting screwed. Nah, sorry Tweety, "you tiger now!"

Chris Matthews has become a caricature of himself. Whatever that person in the black dress is has also the same distinction.

Michael Mukasey's nomination to succeed Gonzales at Justice is expected to be dominated by questions from Democratic senators on the memos.

The liberal establishment media are playing this like it's a giant minus for the White House. But as long as the public is clear on how our interrogation methods saved hundreds, if not thousands of lives, there is little doubt that Gonzales' conduct will come off as the biggest of pluses.

Americans might even start wishing he were back.

So when the Gray Lady this week divulged Justice Department memos authorizing the legality of some of the CIA's tougher methods in prisons in places like Afghanistan, Thailand and Eastern Europe " denying food, slapping terrorists upside the head, mock drowning and turning the air conditioning up too high in their cells " the normal response of anyone who cherishes freedom would be, "Bravo!"

But bravos from congressional Democrats were few and far between. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy complained that Gonzales "reinstated a secret regime." House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers and Rep. Jerrold Nadler wrote to the Justice Department that the secrecy and content of the memos were "extremely troubling."

The Office of Legal Counsel, where the memos were signed, should have its funding cut off unless Congress is handed the actual memos, according to Sen. Christopher Dodd, who's running for president. The nomination of the acting head of that office, Steven Bradbury, to assume the post permanently, has been blocked by Senate Democrats for years now.

Even renegade Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, who never seems to miss a chance at trying to prevent the Bush administration from fighting the global war on terror, called the memos "shocking."

A few weeks ago, congressional Democrats ran President Bush's top law enforcement officer and close adviser and friend out of town. There was no question of lawbreaking; they simply found it outrageous that an attorney general might actually operate in accord with the wishes of the president who appointed him.

Now, thanks to yet another spilling of government secrets pertaining to our struggle against terrorism from the New York Times, we can see that Alberto Gonzales was undeniably a big reason the U.S. homeland has not suffered a post-9/11 terrorist attack " not the villain some would depict him as, but a hero.

The information the U.S. extracted via the CIA terrorist detainee interrogation program has led directly to foiling plots aimed at slaughtering Americans here at home, in Pakistan and in eastern Africa.

It facilitated the capture of high-ranking al-Qaida operatives who have assisted in our interpretation of raw intelligence " including 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, who provided information leading to the arrest of the al-Qaida-linked Indonesian terrorist Riduan Isamuddin, aka "Hambali," allegedly responsible for the 2002 Bali bombing and widely referred to as the bin Laden of Southeast Asia.

Khalid also helped U.S. authorities thwart an al-Qaida anthrax/biological weapons development scheme.

Democrats are fuming over revelations that Alberto Gonzales' Justice Department issued memos ruling the CIA's tough interrogation techniques to be legal.

Never have so many saved lives caused such anger.

Sanjohn Thapa:

Rulings as to legality are to be left to the courts, not the DOJ.

It appears you need some remedial work in government studies.

San, AG Gonzales may be the hero of your New America, but I prefer the old America where we weren't shitting our pants in mortal terror of dying in a war, the old American where we did not shred the Constitution with trembling fingers, the old American where we were the land of the brave not the refuge of torturers.
The New America that you prefer does not have a place for the rule of law or the bill of rights, your New America only has room for fascism, dictatorship and fear.

Let's be fair, now. I have my beefs (he voted for Dubya) about Matthews, too, but one thing you can't accuse his show of is the usual preoccupation with the Bimbo Faction. He, along with CNN's Lou Dobbs, has eschewed the Anna/Paris/Britney hysteria for the most part and, instead, has championed the NeoCon agenda whenever possible. His recent change of heart is too little and too damned LATE!
