Dear Sinead, you may not remember me from the Bel Canto school of singing in Dublin. I just want to applause you for the wonderful human being you have become. You are so natural and genuine. It took a lot of guts to discuss your recent diagnosis of bipolar disorder. I hope this will enable others to come forth about mental illness which should not be stigmatized. If someone is diagnosed with diabetes, would people be stigmatizing them ? This is just an illnes like any other. You have a beautiful voice and still have what it takes to make it in the cut-throat music business. God bless you !

"I repeat Sinead has not aged well."

mrcontinental doth protest too much. You must be scared shitless of aging. I guess accepting your mortality isn't one of your strong suits :)

The video on this thread doesn't cover the most interesting parts of her interview. Here's the transcript of what she said:

http://www.oprah.com/health/coping/disorder/slide/20071004/slide_20071004_350_101.jhtml

btw heretical_eggs, agree with everything you said. Always been part of my admiration of her: that she's consistently searched for her authentic self, even when she didn't have a clue who she was.

She's a modern day spiritual warrior, and an inspiration in this spin-obsessed world.

The swiftest route for recovery for Britney is to be boycotted by the media. Many of these self-destructive personalities have been pop culture's sacrificial offerings to the mighty corporate god of mass destraction. They have no grasp of reality nor any perspective that grounds one to meaning because of the surreal environment they develop cracked and fragmented personalities. As long as the populace enjoys their rise and fall - their flight through life will be continue to be one of turbulence and without a landing platform.

You know you've sunk low when you need advice from Sinead O'Connor. I always liked her music but she seems like a nut.

kalapa, thanks for the npr link. I'm happy to reconnect with her music again. She's up there with the great voices by standing the test of time. As for mr. continental, those views are sadly the reflection of a thoroughly empty fascist corporate culture which emphasizes the FASCile. Get it? Good.

Sinead has the voice of an angel through it all. Let's hope she keeps recording and performing. For all the turbulence, her voice has brought a lot peace to many.

My sister is bipolar and it's incredibly difficult to live with. Without medication the depression side is practically suicidal and requires hospitalization and the manic side was so bad that she wouldn't be able to sleep for weeks and would have psychotic episodes which would end in the hospital. It's a terrible disorder and everyone is affected deeply by it. Medication can control it, but not very well. The effects make people act and look drugged. It's horrible.

"Such a lovely voice. I don't expect that we will see her on stage again"
Killer, I don't suppose u saw the rest of the interview: she's on a US tour right now with her new album Theology. Here's a recent appearance on NPR:

"Sinead has not aged well."
Mrcontinental, this is what aging is naturally, unlike what's happened in the US, where women are pressured to look younger and therefore brutalise themselves with injections, hair dye and operations.

So glad to see someone real on prime time TV, who is comfortable with herself.

This has nothing to do with looking young it's about ageing...some people do it gracefully and some do not and it has nothing to do with some hollywood standard but is more comparable to going to your 25th year high school reunion were some of your friends have aged well and some have not. So stop with your preaching just because the majority of woman in their forties have let themselves go and stay on point.

I repeat: Sinead has not aged well.

Its nice to know that Sinead O'Connor (as a celebrity appearing on Oprah) feels sorry for "celebrities in this country" -- "because of all the attention the media places on them." Did anyone else find that a little strange?

[What a bizarre clown of a woman.]

it began the day she ripped up the Pope's picture.

Coincidence. I don't think so.

hhhaaaa! Ya that's it, "God" is punishing her by giving her bipolar disorder for ripping a picture of the Pope. You would think "God" would spend more time and energy punishing the Pope for turning a blind eye to priests who rape children. Not to mention, punishing those priests!! hhhmmmmm

Ah, yes! The sister of writer Joseph O'Connor!

Just wanted to throw that in because he's quite good and is invariably described, not as "author Joseph O'Connor", but as "Sinead's brother"
