Six years after the first U.S. bombs began falling on Afghanistan's Taliban government and its al-Qaida guests, America is planning for a long stay.

Originally envisioned as a temporary home for invading U.S. forces, the sprawling American base at Bagram, a former Soviet outpost in the shadow of the towering Hindu Kush mountains, is growing in size by nearly a third.

Today the U.S. has about 25,000 troops in the country, and other NATO nations contribute another 25,000, more than three times the number of international troops in the country four years ago, when the Taliban appeared defeated.

I've forgotten who then "enemy" is in Afghanistan. Is it the People, the Taliban, Bin Laden, Islamo-fascism, the opium dealers? So long as the War Machine reaps profits, who cares who we are fighting?

No for realty:
US invaded Afghanistan only after 9/11. Prior to that Bush/Cheney/Rice priority was beating China down.
Lucky escape for Chinese, 9/11 happened. Taliban chose the alliance with Al Qaeda and were taken down. But essentially Taliban can still sell out Al Qaeda and get back into some power sharing. The choice is theirs.
If they chose to give up bunch of Al Qaeda top people, including Bin Laden, they can be legitimized in no time.

And the LA Times, that bastion of liberal fruits, nuts and flakes, says we're losing the war in Afghanistan as well:
