AP:

Four Democratic candidates have withdrawn from Michigan's Jan. 15 presidential primary, undercutting the validity of the contest.

Barack Obama, John Edwards and Bill Richardson filed paperwork Tuesday, the deadline to withdraw from the ballot, said Kelly Chesney, spokeswoman for the Michigan Secretary of State's office.

I think that this is a TERRIBLE situation and I am so glad that Hillary hasn't removed herself from the Michigan ballot. The people of Michigan should not lose their right to participate in the Presidential primaries because the state party leaders are greedy. This seems unconsitutional to me.

And she was the last to announced. I guess her internal polling is telling her that she doesn't have this thing locked up and needs to pick up a state where there are no other canididates. What a sleazy move. I understand what Florida and Michigan people are feeling. But they should of figure this out last year and not just spring this up during the middle of a campaign season.

Hillary is already thinking of the General Election. Michigan is a state that the Dems absolutely have to carry to win. Why piss them off. If someone else other than Hillary is the nominee, maybe Michigan and Florida voters won't be so generous or receptive to candidates who don't believe they have as much right and ability to pick our candidates as spoiled voters in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The other dems will try to make some cheap political points against her for this, but the anger that the other 46 states have is real and palpable. THEY won't hold it against any candidate who won't brownnose Iowa and New Hampshire spoiled brats.

Hillary will do anything to win, including 'sticking a finger in the eye' of the Democratic Party and the many voters in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

Instead of respecting the promise made by all the other Dem candidates not to 'reward' those states that violate DNC rules, Hillary wants her 'cake and eat it too". Just like she can't resist taking 'dirty money' from sleazy donors, she can't resist the temptation to show everyone that the Clinton's can do whatever they want.

I wonder if Hillary can look the voters of Iowa in the eye and tell them that..." While I respect the tradition of the Iowa caucus, please trust me to live by my word, but I want to help those people in Michigan to overturn YOUR long-standing practice of being first."

Bravo to those candidates who lived up to do 'what was right', by taking their names off the ballot. That really demonstrates who, in this presidential race, has integrity, character and good judgment. Can we trust someone who 'twists and bends' their promises?

In is quite obvious that "playing by the rules" is not in Hillary's playbook.

Thanks, but no thanks to Hillary.

Utter caca.

I'd love it if she or any candidate looked the voters of Iowa in the eye and said, "you don't have an entitled or divine right to vote first and I support making sure every other American has equal power and influence in choosing a nominee, and ripping your unfair sense of entitlement from you."

No one will, of course.

Who cares if Iowa and New Hampshire always went first before. The rules are unfair and I support anyone who stand up to them in principle. Go Michigan and go Florida!!!

Hillary's not acting in principle, of course, but let's not kid ourselves that they others guys are either.

I'm 100% behind Hillary on this.

Screw Iowa.
Screw New Hampshire
Screw South Carolina
Screw Nevada.

No American deserves any more power and influence in choosing the Presidential nominee. I don't need my choices winnowed down for me be Iowa and New Hampshire voters with an undeserved sense of entitlement.

I was very disappointed to see Kuchinich pulled out of Michigan.

I hope Gravel stays and campaigns up and down the state.

I support Michigan and Florida ripping that sense of entitlement away from these spoiled voters.

In fact, I think California, New York, Texas and Florida should all move their primaries to the date of the Iowa Caucus and then dare the DNC and the RNC to disenfranchise them.

The time has come to rescue American democracy from the tyranny of small states and swing states.

We should have one national primary/caucus day where everone's vote counts equally and direct popular vote election in November where every vote counts equally, with a runoff in December if no candidate wins 50% of the vote.

Small states already receive "protection" by their overrepresentation in the Senate.

The Civil War is over and it shouldn't be about states rights and privileges anymore. Citizens should be empowered. And if most Americans live in metropolitain areas in large states, then that is who should have the most power and influence.

Good for Hillary!

On principle, the other Democrats shouldn't be brownnosing Iowa and New Hampshire. They should be supporting a process that doesn't discriminate against urban citizens and the people of color who primarily live in urban areas.

I'm going to do something I rarely have a reason to do. Congratulated Hillary Clinton for doing the right thing, or in this case, not doing the wrong thing.

As a Florida resident my vote in the primary has been taken from me. It's not as if anyone asked the voters what their opinions were of moving up the primary date. As a citizen, I had no control over their decision. I wrote letters asking my representatives and the governor to please reconsider, but all I got back was a form letter from the ones that even bothered to respond. What more could I have done? I am angry with the leadership in Florida for making such a stupid decision and also with the DNC for punishing the voters by stripping us of all delegates. So...once again Florida voters get screwed.
Now it seems that the state democratic leaders and the national democratic leaders are playing a power game for control. Neither one will give in. Its a game where no one wins, but I know who loses...its me.
I was all fired up about the election, but now I am just depressed when I think about it. I have no reason to be interested or involved. My vote does not count.

Too bad there's not an Eleanor Roosevelt around to remind Mrs. Clinton that principles are important!Of course, Eleanor'd have to explain what principles ARE to Mrs. Clinton!
But there're no more Eleanors, although Mrs Edwards showed promise. What we ARE getting more of, though, is Oliver Norths! Amazing that a general like Petraeus can get away with so much...there was a time when it was not considered unpatriotic to satirize foolish men with rows of ribbons. We used to (I'm in my 70s) pride ourselves that OUR military was not addicted to endless rows of ribbons, a la Herman Goering, Soviet Field Marshals, and the Ueber Generals of the armies behind the Latin Curtain. When the Defense Unification act passed it was hoped that all three services would adopt the SAME dress uniforms. They took the first steps and soon abandoned them. I'm surprised that ALL officers and not just the successors of Oliver North, such as Petraeus, and the ethically challenged General Mayer of the US Air Force, do not carry swagger sticks smartly under their arms!
What in the world are those Michigan Democrats thinking of? Who put them up to this?
When did Americans become so covetous of honors and lording it over others? How did the descendants of those who fled all that garbage become addicted to it?

Mrs. Clinton can, like the Michigander Democrats who puffed themselves up by moving the primary date so they can be the first to be interviewed on tv coming from the polls, go right ahead and puff herself and Arkansas up. I mean, this is what it's all about...scoring for the home team. That was a normal and respectable pursuit when American sports were sporting and not a business. Now, it's just selling ourselves.
You can expect Mrs. Clinton to be AS principled when it comes to preemptive war, torture, and idolizing entrepreneurism. When will she start speaking of "partially" privatizing medicare and social security?
What has SHE said about the forced abortions of the oppressed imported labor in the Marianas? W

I feel the point is well taken, that it's not fair to the voters of Michigan, if they are left with no choice to make - AND - it could backfire on the Dems and piss off a lot of voters.
on the other hand
I must admire the principaled stance of those candidates that are "doing the right thing" and standing up to the State who thinks they get to make their own rules. In the long run, I much prefer the candidate who risks loss for the sake of principal.
Further, this shines a little more spotlight on the depth of Hilary's character, that she will do ANYTHING to win, NOTHING will stand in her way.
I don't know.
It could work against her in the long run

You are right , why should Iowa and New Hampshire be first? That was the "timetable" that everybody agreed to for many years.

Sadly, Michigan voters, including ME are getting screwed. BUT, those who supporting the idea to defy 'the accepted pratice', put OUR RIGHT TO VOTE on the line and played chicken with the Democratic Party.

Nobody addressed my previous question. Why didn't Michigan or Florida, follow the procedure that Nevada followed to 'move up'?

Since this tradition has been going on for many years, way drag your feet for so long, waiting for a few months before the primary to challenge the system?

While I respect our Senator Levin, he helped create a "no-win" situation for us voters, the candidate we are supporting, and the unity of the Democratic Party. What did he gain from this except to give the republicans a chance to unite THEIR party and draw attention to party in-fighting. Just what we need.

If ALL the candidates would have lived up to their pledge not to reward Michigan for breaking the established rules, then Michigan leaders would have said that they need to 'undo' the mistake that they made. In that way, WE could have voted for our candidate. Point your finger at Hillary and Dodd, as well. Shame on them.

Could Carl, Jennifer and Hillary's campaign have 'worked this whole thing out' ahead of time?

Hillary just LOVES this kind of 'divide and conquer' and 'whatever it takes' kind of politics.

If she gets the nomination, I KNOW that there will be a viable third party "UNITY TICKET" that will draw many, many Democrats, Republicans and Independants to the polls.

We are tired of the same old politics. It's time we find leaders who want to get things done in Washington.

Write to Levin and our state officials and tell them that we want our VOTE back. All they have to do is sit down with the Democratic Party and work together.

Let's see if our elected officials REALLY have the voters interest at heart, or are they just playing politics.

How exactly is not ignoring almost 5 million Michigan voters (who just happen to be stuck in the middle of a pointless in-house struggle) being wrong on an issue?

I'm no fan of Hilary, but seriously....

Good for Hillary! Considering that at this point, she's the likely nominee, it's probably a good idea not to piss off key states like Michigan.

Obama should have stayed on too, in case Hillary slips and falls in Iowa and the winds shift his way.

Bottom Line: Any likely nominee should not be alienating key battleground states.

On some things it is better to be standing on principles rather then be greedy. But then I said a long time ago Hillary is a greedy bitch.

I'm a Michigan voter and this royally pisses me off. Especially coming today, when the GOP is in Dearborn, talking about things that matter to me and my fellow Michiganders.

I'm espcecially upset with Obama, whom after claiming to be anything other than politics as usual, he is bowing to this elite power struggle.

All this means is because the state Democrats made a decision, that all the primary voters get absolutly no say. That isn't even so bad, since it is debatable how important primaries other than Iowa/NH are. Whats worse is no attention to the auto industry, and no answers to Michigan voters questions.

If we were talking about Ohio, does anybody think people would be talking about pulling out of the primary? Hell No. The Dems are so sure that Michigan will ultimately end up in their camp (probably true) that they are willing to blow us off.

Oh well, at least this gives me a great reason to vote for Gravel.

GRRRR
