The Army is offering cash bonuses of up to $35,000 to retain young officers serving in key specialties -- including military intelligence, infantry and aviation -- in an unprecedented bid to forestall a critical shortage of officer ranks that have been hit hard by frequent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Army officials said that lengthy and repeated war-zone tours -- the top reason younger officers leave the service -- plus the need for thousands of new officers as the Army moves forward with expansion plans have contributed to a projected shortfall of about 3,000 captains and majors for every year through 2013.

The US has only two kinds of soldiers now:
public mercenaries and private mercenaries.
There are fewer constraints on the private ones and they cost more.

But they are necessary to the government, for it cannot conscript people. So few believe in it, and what it is doing, that there would be riots if they tried.

All Blackwater employees should be tried for war crimes in Iraqi courts. Then when they all recieve the death penalty they can have their choice of a good old fashioned videotaped beheading or a date with a Black & Decker.

35 grand for an officer to re-up. 20 grand for an enlisted man to re-up. 500-1,000 dollars a day for a Blackwater guard. Most of the reconnstruction money disapearing due to graft and corrupton. 200,000 rifle go missing, plane loads of cash go missing. Pay tribal chiefs millions for their loyalty. Most hospitals and clinics are without medicine and supplies cause they've found their way to the black market. No-bid contracts etc. BUT THE CHILDRENS MED INS BILL IS TO COSTLY. WHATS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE.

yup....peanuts compared to what Blackwater mercenaries get... and THEY don't get courtmartialed for murdering civilians.....

But seriously.... the military is losing junior officers at record rates - not seen since Vietnam. West Point grads are bailing out when they can get out instead of making this permanent clusterf**k a career....

The moral and ethical core of our military is DISGUSTED at what they're being ordered to do.... but speak out and your career is dead - Capt. Fishback really made a difference with torture, didn't he....... OR YOU end up dead.... Col Westhusing REALLY killed himself after expressing serious objections to the behavior of "subcontractors" in Iraq?......

It's appalling that the REAL patriotism, courage and honor of those that serve has been so dishonored by this nation's leadership.

The Republicans have no problem openly bribing officers to stay. But no money for education or health care for the enlisted.

Tells you where their priorities are.

And can you blame them??! Apparently, Blackwater already has the upgraded Humvees, that are lacking in the regular forces.

Let's see...200 grand a year, plus all manner of benefits, or 35,000 and piss-poor gear?

Yeah...right...

Even the Reserves and Guard are 93 - 110% of their recruiting and retention goals.

Osprey's debut in combat zone has rocky start
Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Oct 09 8:00 AM By JAY PRICE

The controversial V-22 Osprey has arrived in a combat zone for the first time. It was an epic trip for the innovative $20 billion tilt-rotor plane, which took more than 25 years to develop, a process that included several fatal crashes. Even the last short hop -- from an amphibious assault ship into Iraq -- went awry, U.S. military officials said Monday. A malfunction forced one of ...

How much does the Pentagon offer to get a Officer to fly in the new Osprey?

And by 'common sense' what do you mean?

The next President has already chimed in on the war and not much is going to change.

Funny. You seem to do a great deal of whining yourself. I do understand that you are lonely and have nothing better to do. You would be more at home on www.freerepublic.com.

A little blood money, eh? Wonder how big a life insurance policy one could get. Of course, what company would ensure these guys at any price.

Just say NO! It's a deal you can afford to miss. Take yourself home in one piece if you can.

We have shortage of Captains? Promote enough 1st Lieutenants to fill the gap, then promote 2nd Lieutenants to 1st and commission NCO's as 2LTs, etc.

Promotions are not the problem.

Officers are trained in the field by NCO's who in most cases have anywhere from 6 to 14 years of experience under their belt. A LT is groomed for 3 or 4 years before they are considered ready to command and then as a CPT they are more of a manager while their 1SG actually runs the company. This is understood and accepted as the way the army works and has stood the test of time. If this process is accelerated and sufficient time is not spent molding young officers you will have a breakdown of leadership because you will have a 22year old fresh out of ROTC who thinks he knows more than a 34 year old SFC who has 16 years of experience and that just won't fly.

As long as young officers respect this arrangement and realize that they have much to learn from their senior NCOs things will continue and the army will survive but as soon as these young officers move up the ranks to quickly and start to ignore their senior NCOs you will have a mass exodus of senior NCOs which will be far worse.

In short officers manage the army while the NCOs train and lead it and there is no substitute for experience in this regard.

A good summation of how the Army works MrContinental. I was more than aware of it. Nothing quite like the good ol' boy network to instantaneously correct a Finance error, pass an IG inspection, etc.

I thought it would sound flippant to mention it in my original post.

It is not that simple. Captains are promoted usually around their initial EOS.

What saddens me most is the fact that we, as a nation, cannot seem to discuss the issues behind the recruitment and sustainment tactics used by the military and who they target. It's no shock or secret that to the majority of kids that have been sucked in that $35K is a lot of money. Isn't relativity a beautiful thing?

They're allegedly 'bribing' officers. College grads. Edumacated inidviduals. Ignorance seems to be relative, also.
