Come On, People, Ann Coulter Needs Some Attention!
Yawn. Is it wrong that I am almost completely unexercised about Ann Coulter's latest bon mot? I mean, is it possible to top smearing 9/11 widows? Yet it's big news, as Ann Coulter idiocies tend to be, so we are bound to mention that it's making headlines across the board today, including on bread-and-butter network Fox News. What, pray tell, did the queen of lucid and rational commentary say this time? In a nutshell, she said that Jews ought to become Christians so they could be "perfected." Well, this Jew must be on her way because the only thing I can think of to say to that is "Jesus Christ."
Here's the transcript from Monday's The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch on CNBC, courtesy of Media Matters. Donny Deutsch's revulsion and incredulity are pretty apparent. Here's the set-up: Deutsch asked Coulter about what her ideal version of the country looked like. She said it would look like the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York, which we remember as having huge protests but she recalls as "Happy, joyful Republicans in the greatest city in the world." And so it went from there:
COULTER: Well, OK, take the Republican National Convention. People were happy. They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America, they --DEUTSCH: Christian -- so we should be Christian? It would be better if we were all Christian?
COULTER: Yes.
DEUTSCH: We should all be Christian?
COULTER: Yes. Would you like to come to church with me, Donny?
DEUTSCH: So I should not be a Jew, I should be a Christian, and this would be a better place? (snip) We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians, then, or --
COULTER: Yeah.
DEUTSCH: Really?
COULTER: Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track.
DEUTSCH: Really?
COULTER: Yeah. You have to obey.
DEUTSCH: You can't possibly believe that.
COULTER: Yes.
DEUTSCH: You can't possibly -- you're too educated, you can't -- you're like my friend in --
COULTER: Do you know what Christianity is? We believe your religion, but you have to obey.
DEUTSCH: No, no, no, but I mean --
COULTER: We have the fast-track program.
COULTER: No, we think -- we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say.
DEUTSCH: Wow, you didn't really say that, did you?
COULTER: Yes. That is what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners --
DEUTSCH: In my old days, I would have argued -- when you say something absurd like that, there's no --
COULTER: What's absurd?
DEUTSCH: Jews are going to be perfected. I'm going to go off and try to perfect myself --
COULTER: Well, that's what the New Testament says.
DEUTSCH: Ann Coulter, author of If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans, and if Ann Coulter had any brains, she would not say Jews need to be perfected.
There you go. Ann Coulter believes that Jews need to be "perfected" and that Christianity is the Federal Express of Judaism, whatever the hell that means, and never mind the Ten Commandments Exodus 20:17, but whatever. I mean, this woman is a fucking moron. Do we really expect more from the person who said that "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity?" (She has claimed that she was only talking about Muslim terrorists here, but again, whatever.) Tolerance has never been her strong suit. The only people who have been tolerant of her has been a media that continues to give her a megaphone by reprinting all of her ridiculous statements — and inviting her back again and again to push her various high-minded books (just yesterday, she was on "Tucker" on MSNBC).
The good news is that each time she cries wolf, more and more people react this way. With revulsion, but more importantly, with boredom and impatience. Yes, it's true, her inane comment is plastering the internet and the cablers right now (CNN,Fox, Ha'aretz (obvs), no doubt all the cable shows tonight and surely many already), but every reaction seems to be along the lines of "Here she goes again." (It's not even like her heart's in it, for God's sake — c'mon, Ann, at least call someone Sugar Tits or something.) All told, it's hardly a recipe for credibility — not that that's what she's going for, but still, there's got to be a tipping point and with every one of these we get closer and closer to it. For me, this is it. I don't think I'm alone — see Jezebel, Wonkette, Ha'aretz, which are all less outraged than bemused. At this point, I'm just hoping that the rest of the MSM is with me. Hm, maybe I'll offer up a prayer to my heathen God for it. Leviticus 5:5 - 6 should do it. There's a New Testament fast track joke in here somewhere, hm. Maybe here.
We haven't quite learned to ignore her yet — but we're getting there.
