2007-10-11-AnnCoulterGetInLine.JPGYawn. Is it wrong that I am almost completely unexercised about Ann Coulter's latest bon mot? I mean, is it possible to top smearing 9/11 widows? Yet it's big news, as Ann Coulter idiocies tend to be, so we are bound to mention that it's making headlines across the board today, including on bread-and-butter network Fox News. What, pray tell, did the queen of lucid and rational commentary say this time? In a nutshell, she said that Jews ought to become Christians so they could be "perfected." Well, this Jew must be on her way because the only thing I can think of to say to that is "Jesus Christ."

Here's the transcript from Monday's The Big Idea With Donny Deutsch on CNBC, courtesy of Media Matters. Donny Deutsch's revulsion and incredulity are pretty apparent. Here's the set-up: Deutsch asked Coulter about what her ideal version of the country looked like. She said it would look like the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York, which we remember as having huge protests but she recalls as "Happy, joyful Republicans in the greatest city in the world." And so it went from there:

COULTER: Well, OK, take the Republican National Convention. People were happy. They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America, they --

DEUTSCH: Christian -- so we should be Christian? It would be better if we were all Christian?

COULTER: Yes.

DEUTSCH: We should all be Christian?

COULTER: Yes. Would you like to come to church with me, Donny?

DEUTSCH: So I should not be a Jew, I should be a Christian, and this would be a better place? (snip) We should just throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians, then, or --

COULTER: Yeah.

DEUTSCH: Really?

COULTER: Well, it's a lot easier. It's kind of a fast track.

DEUTSCH: Really?

COULTER: Yeah. You have to obey.

DEUTSCH: You can't possibly believe that.

COULTER: Yes.

DEUTSCH: You can't possibly -- you're too educated, you can't -- you're like my friend in --

COULTER: Do you know what Christianity is? We believe your religion, but you have to obey.

DEUTSCH: No, no, no, but I mean --

COULTER: We have the fast-track program.

COULTER: No, we think -- we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say.

DEUTSCH: Wow, you didn't really say that, did you?

COULTER: Yes. That is what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws. We know we're all sinners --

DEUTSCH: In my old days, I would have argued -- when you say something absurd like that, there's no --

COULTER: What's absurd?

DEUTSCH: Jews are going to be perfected. I'm going to go off and try to perfect myself --

COULTER: Well, that's what the New Testament says.

DEUTSCH: Ann Coulter, author of If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans, and if Ann Coulter had any brains, she would not say Jews need to be perfected.

There you go. Ann Coulter believes that Jews need to be "perfected" and that Christianity is the Federal Express of Judaism, whatever the hell that means, and never mind the Ten Commandments Exodus 20:17, but whatever. I mean, this woman is a fucking moron. Do we really expect more from the person who said that "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity?" (She has claimed that she was only talking about Muslim terrorists here, but again, whatever.) Tolerance has never been her strong suit. The only people who have been tolerant of her has been a media that continues to give her a megaphone by reprinting all of her ridiculous statements — and inviting her back again and again to push her various high-minded books (just yesterday, she was on "Tucker" on MSNBC).

The good news is that each time she cries wolf, more and more people react this way. With revulsion, but more importantly, with boredom and impatience. Yes, it's true, her inane comment is plastering the internet and the cablers right now (CNN,Fox, Ha'aretz (obvs), no doubt all the cable shows tonight and surely many already), but every reaction seems to be along the lines of "Here she goes again." (It's not even like her heart's in it, for God's sake — c'mon, Ann, at least call someone Sugar Tits or something.) All told, it's hardly a recipe for credibility — not that that's what she's going for, but still, there's got to be a tipping point and with every one of these we get closer and closer to it. For me, this is it. I don't think I'm alone — see Jezebel, Wonkette, Ha'aretz, which are all less outraged than bemused. At this point, I'm just hoping that the rest of the MSM is with me. Hm, maybe I'll offer up a prayer to my heathen God for it. Leviticus 5:5 - 6 should do it. There's a New Testament fast track joke in here somewhere, hm. Maybe here.

We haven't quite learned to ignore her yet — but we're getting there.

She's nuts, right. As in suffers from a patholgical narcissim? You might get a kick out of today’s episode of the daily comedy news show “The Ointment” which offers a look at Ann Coulter’s secret love life.:

Amazing! If everyone is truly as feed up with Anne Coulter as they claim to be then stop publicizing her! Stop blogging her! Stop wasting 7 pages of this HufPost site to bitch about a comment you would expect her to make anyway. This is exactly why she won't go away because everyone here, myself included, is contributing to her media visibility. If you can't stand da beotch, let it end RIGHT NOW!

The content of Ms. Coulter's recent diatribe is not as important as two questions which it raises: first, why does mainstream media continue to invite an untalented, unintelligent bigot to air her bile? Second, does she merely express something that others of her ilk also believe in secret, but have the political expediency to suppress?

Granted, Coulter is the Paris Hilton of pundits. However, sadly we are a nation which celebrates celebrity over talent and acumen (something which can certainly be said of our current administration). It may be the responsibility of media outlets to stop providing a forum for such arcane displays of ignorance. However, this does not change the fact that Coulter is merely the voice of many equally prejudiced people.

We should celebrate freedom of speech, and hope that, through continuing to hear Coulter and company spew their venom, people will wake up, recognize, and reject the vulgarity of all such hate-mongers. Maybe then we can have intelligent dialogue in lieu of being beholden to (and led by) ignoramuses in slick packaging.

Religion is a moot point, there is no evidence of any God, so these attacks mean nothing!!

We all want to believe in something supernatural, so that when we trash other races and religions we can feel justified.

Sick!!!

Mann Coulter is a perfect example of republicans. He is confused about his sexuality, or his sexuality is confusing with that huge man's adam apple, as he dresses in little girl clothes.

He lies all the time, loves wars that he is too cowardly to fight, and he lies all the time. He lies to spread hate, and he lies all the time. He lies all the time. Really, that man lies all.. the.... time.

Jews need to ask Mann Coulter if converting to Christianity will perfect Jews, why is he so pathetic. Mann Coulter's family are Jews(ethnic) who converted from Judaism to Christianity. Mann Coulter knows as much about any religion as his friend, She Hannity. The Mann, She-Hannity, and the other bigots do not represent Christianity or any religion.

New books about the man, Mann Coulter.

1. "Scandalous! that a man, Mann Coulter, with a big adam's apple dares to wear a dress".

2. "Treason! for a man with such as Mann Coulter to claim to be a woman".

3. "If Mann Coulter was a woman he would still be a man republican in the bathroom stalls with secret feet codes".

4. "Mann Coulter, and the republican closet sexual pervert men, who love him"

Seems there's a lot of wasted energy even talking about ann coulter. Her opinions are a waste of time, I'm sure her mother agrees.

With the emergence of many well know Political and Christian figures who share that opinion, how do you feel about this.
Do you consider Christianity a perfected form of Judaism?

Well, as an extremely lapsed Jew, I've always considered Christianity to be sort of Club Med or Judaism Lite in as much as the vast majority of Christians (from whatever quarter) seem to enjoy a kind of a la carte view of spirituality in which you can simply pick and choose the tenets of your personal belief system.

Tolerant of homosexuality, but abhor Jews; that's OK.

Tolerant of Jews, but can't stomach abortion:; that's OK.

Pro-choice, but want to ignore the whole judgement is the privilege of the Almighty; there'll be version of Christianity to suit you in some strip mall nearby.

The Christianity that Coulter espouses is a tacky, shiny, plastic sort of religion which would be barely recognisable to men and women whose spiritual beliefs are rooted in sincerity, tolerance and a quest for some sort of wisdom and meaning; Is she also saying that people like Gandhi or the Dalai Lama would be better off as Christians?

This hateful stick-insect talks about American values whilst somehow failing to remember that America was founded by refugees from religious intolerance.

Want to expedite the end of Coulter’s 15 minutes? Do the kind of grass-roots organizing and protesting that got Imus booted from MSNBC” and killed Dr. Laura Schlesinger’s TV show.

Target advertisers sponsoring shows that plan to have Coulter as a guest. Threaten to boycott. Hold protests outside those advertisers’ buildings, at the cable networks where Coulter makes appearances, at her publisher, and at her bookstore appearances. Dig up her dirt and throw it at her. Get press coverage, start the momentum, and watch her crash and burn.

Imus was kicked within a week of making that “nappy-headed hos” remark. But Dr. Laura’s TV show suffered a slower, more painful death—which would be a more likely scenario in Coulter’s case.

Schlessinger had once been very supportive of gay callers to her radio show, but changed course and began hyping ex-gay “cure” groups. Before the TV show premiere, Schlessinger called homosexuality a “biological error.”

In response, GLBT activists held protests in New York and in other U.S. cities. A Web site was launched just to get the show cancelled. Then she appeared on The View. There were protests outside the studio. She was confronted by audience members as well as by Joy Behar and Barbara Walters.

When her show aired many critics and viewers found it dull and cold. Within a month, she took out an ad in Variety magazine apologizing for her "poorly chosen" words about homosexuality. Subsequently, the media reported that Schlessinger was using a member of her staff to pose as guests on the show.

Within two months of the premiere, the show had lost many advertisers and its ratings were in freefall. CBS directed its stations to move the show to a late-night slot or replace it. The show was canceled six months after its debut.

Coulter has just given Jewish groups THE reason to begin a campaign. Other minorities who have been her targets—gays, for example—are itching to pounce and would likely form a coalition.

For once, I agree with Ann Coulter. Jews do need to be perfected. As do Christians. As do Muslims. The whole damn lot of 'em need something other than what they currently have. And, if you don't believe that, you've obviously been sleeping through the last half century.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:52 AM on 10/14/2007

Yes; Christians, Jews, Muslims. Not a difference among them. If you don't believe that here's a little experiment:

Stand outside a church in Rome and denounce the Bible.
Stand outside a synagogue in Jerusalem and denounce the Talmud.
Stand outside a mosque in Tehran and denounce the Koran.

Let us know if all reactions are the same or if any one of the groups stands out in their response.

What concerns me is that I can continue stand ANYWHERE in 'OUR country' and denounce ALL THREE AS BULLSHNITZ FAIRY TALES, except perhaps in their places of worship,...wouldn't be polite.

Not allowing neoCONS and CONgress to subvert and dismantle OUR Constitution would ensure that no 'religion' EVER takes over OUR country. It's why WE take oaths to protect The Constitution from enemies foreign AND domestic.

It IS the season for FEAR and being afraid of spooky things you can't comprehend though, huh? Let me help,

ownsthepodium: Weak arguement, because that can be said about any group of people being attacked by their enemy. The reactions may not be same, because people are different.

Stand outside a fire station and yell fire.
Stand outside a gay persons home and yell bigot slurs.
Stand outside an African-American place, hold a noose and yell racist slurs.
Stand outside an atheist home and yell "murder them all they do not belong here."
Stand outside a woman's home and yell "rape her".

If those inside don't beat the blank out of you, someone will. Any person who has pride about his life, family, friends, etc. will not and should not tolerate hate directed at them.

And a person being attacked, has the right to defend themselves.....

BY, WHAT... EVER... MEANS... NECESSARY.

Our local Barnes and Noble bookstore had set up a stand of her new book in the front of the store.
It disappeared immediately after she made her latest fascist statement.

Someone should look into Coulter's childhood. Something went terribly wrong in that woman's upbringing. Perhaps she was molested, abused, dropped on her head, given lead and mercury to play with......

I've seen her in person before. I honestly think she's mentally ill.

And I'm not just saying that because I disagree with her political point of view. Her presence is very erratic. Her casual actions remind me of the few acquaintances I've known who were later committed to mental institutions.

She stares out from this ghastly deep-sunken expression that is quite disturbing. She responds to situations like a sociopath -- the natural timing is not quite there, instead there's this eerie, subjugated poise like a brainwashed cult devotee, or a voodoo-possessed zombie. Except her subjugation happened through childhood conditioning or perhaps a congenital defect.

I went to this nightclub once where there was a gogo dancer onstage who was clearly mentally retarded. I asked the club owner why, and he said "because it's funny." Reminds me of the Ann Coulter phenomenon in many ways. Makes me sad to see her.

The best thing for me about these latest comments is that I absolutely do not care anymore about these comments. In the past, I'd just look at her and get pissed off. It seems like the spell has been broken, and comments like hers kind of wash away, like Britney lyrics or episodes of The Bachelor.
