It may be a long way away, but early indications are that a 2010 Senate race between incumbent Republican John McCain and Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano could be very competitive. A Rasmussen Reports telephone survey found that, if the election were held today, Napolitano would attract 46% of the vote and McCain would earn 45%.

That's an amazing result considering that McCain began 2007 as the perceived frontrunner in the race for the Republican Presidential Nomination. However, his national campaign imploded in mid-year when McCain vocally became a vocal advocate for the wildly unpopular "comprehensive" immigration reform proposal.

2010 is really a long way off. Incumbent Senators have about a 75% chance of being reelected. In 2004, McCain won with 78% of the vote.

What is fascinating is Napolitano's popularity in this state that really is the bedrock of libertartian Republicanism. Arizona really is solid Goldwater territory, at least Barry Goldwater territory.

There are some ramifications to Napolitano's popularity for the 08 elections. McCain isn't going to be standard bearer, nor do I think he would do something as foolish as a third party run. However, I also don't believe that he would enthusiastically endorse a knuckle dragging bible thumper like Thompson nor one who has pandered to the snake handling crew like Romney.

In short, there will be a battle for Arizona's future with Napolitano representing it and McCain not really giving much of a damn anymore. Nor will McCain be doing his usual stumping for candidates in the West if the Revival Tent Republicans manage to keep control of the GOP. The Mountain Western states will truly be battleground states in 08.

McCain will continue to be reelected in 2010. And 2016 for that matter. He might even try to rival Strom Thurmond and go for 2022. It's possible. His mother is still living and very lucid in her mid 90s.

Unfortunately for McCain, he left his sanity and his testicles on the battlefield all those years ago. I for one will not forget the virtual frottage between he and George W. Bu$h that took place on stage after stage in 2004 when he vigorously supported Dumbya's re-appointment(I refuse to call it a reelection considering 2000). I kind of wish he would be the nominee, all the Dem nominee would have to do is remind and show Americans McCain with his arms dutifully wrapped around his Master and she'd ride in on Gossamer Wings.

Unlike most Republicans, I respect McCain, but I still strongly disagree with his positions.

I think it would be funny as hell if Ron Paul took his campaign funds and ran as a Libertarian for the Senate in AZ and BEAT McChristian like a red headed step child.

I'm rooting for Ron Paul Supporters success in getting him nominated.... The only honest conservative running....

And even though I disagree with him on most points, and can't vote for him... he and his supporters show that "conservative american" does NOT mean you are tied at the hip and Marching in lockstep with the NeoCancers....

I'm 100% good with that

Unless McCain has a bet with Harry Byrd, I would not think that McCain would be interested in another term. His age is beginning to show and his political relevance has passed.

McCAin, now easily identified as a bush sycophant, needs to be rejected by the voters. His is an ideology of fear and warfare. He remains relevant only because he and his policy of war have not been rejected.
