AP:

For years, former Vice President Al Gore and a host of climate scientists were belittled and, worst of all, ignored for their message about how dire global warming is. On Friday, they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their warnings about what Gore calls "a planetary emergency."

Gore shared the prize with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a United Nations network of scientists. This scientific panel has explained the dry details of global warming in thousands of pages of footnoted reports every six years or so since 1990.

During his speech to a crowd of about 300 that included meteorology students and a host of professional meteorologists, Dr Gray also said those who had linked global warming to the increased number of hurricanes in recent years were in error.

He cited statistics showing there were 101 hurricanes from 1900 to 1949, in a period of cooler global temperatures, compared to 83 from 1957 to 2006 when the earth warmed.

"The human impact on the atmosphere is simply too small to have a major effect on global temperatures," Dr Gray said.

He said his beliefs had made him an outsider in popular science.

"It bothers me that my fellow scientists are not speaking out against something they know is wrong," he said. "But they also know that they'd never get any grants if they spoke out. I don't care about grants."

At his first appearance since the award was announced in Oslo, Mr Gore said: "We have to quickly find a way to change the world's consciousness about exactly what we're facing."

Mr Gore shared the Nobel prize with the United Nations climate panel for their work in helping to galvanise international action against global warming.

But Dr Gray, whose annual forecasts of the number of tropical storms and hurricanes are widely publicised, said a natural cycle of ocean water temperatures - related to the amount of salt in ocean water - was responsible for the global warming that he acknowledges has taken place.

However, he said, that same cycle meant a period of cooling would begin soon and last for several years.

"We'll look back on all of this in 10 or 15 years and realise how foolish it was," Dr Gray said.

Well perhaps Dr. Gray will turn on the news tonight to see that Southern California is on fire! Time for a P.H.D. recertifications for "doctors" who obviously have WAY too much vested in their Exxon/Mobile, Chevron, BPS stock (among others)

We have a global emergency here and all you idiots care about is killing the messenger.

How pathetic, grow up and realize that your portfolio will be worth squat when we all burn to the ground!

http://www.smh.com.au/news/environment/gore-gets-a-cold-shoulder/2007/10/13/1191696238792.html

ONE of the world's foremost meteorologists has called the theory that helped Al Gore share the Nobel Peace Prize "ridiculous" and the product of "people who don't understand how the atmosphere works".

Dr William Gray, a pioneer in the science of seasonal hurricane forecasts, told a packed lecture hall at the University of North Carolina that humans were not responsible for the warming of the earth.

His comments came on the same day that the Nobel committee honoured Mr Gore for his work in support of the link between humans and global warming.

"We're brainwashing our children," said Dr Gray, 78, a long-time professor at Colorado State University. "They're going to the Gore movie [An Inconvenient Truth] and being fed all this. It's ridiculous."

A little help, please.

Regarding Global Warming:

What is the underlying reason people choose to deny the overwhelming evidence that the climate is warming?

I can not even understand why the oil companies would want to deny global warming. They have the money and the technology to lead us toward a new energy source while profiting from the ever dwindling supply of fossil fuels. It seems like a logical transition any fairly bright CEO would want to make.

But I digress.

What is gained by denying global warming?

Will somebody please tell me.

Thank you,
Bob

!. MONEY is being made by continuing using fossil fuels and not reducing pollution.
2. POWER to control this resource.

Nice company, Al:

2005 MOHAMED ELBARADEI (joint winner). He’s done such a nice job with Iran.

2004 WANGARI MAATHAI. The Kenyan ecologist peacefully teaches that the AIDS virus is a biological agent deliberately created by the Man.

2002 JIMMY CARTER JR., former President of the United States of America. A true cosmopolitan, he has undermined the foreign policy of his own country and vouched for the bona fides of tyrants and murderers all over the world.

2001 UNITED NATIONS, New York, NY, USA._KOFI ANNAN, United Nations Secretary General. Among other things, they have respectively served as the vehicle for, and presided over, one of the biggest scams in history.

1994 YASSER ARAFAT (joint winner), Chairman of the Executive Committee of the PLO, President of the Palestinian National Authority. He was a cold-blooded murderer both before and after receiving the award.

1992 RIGOBERTA MENCHU TUM, Guatemala. She is the notorious Guatemalan faker and author, sort of, of I, Rigoberta Menchu.

1988 THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE-KEEPING FORCES New York, NY, U.S.A. Notwithstanding rapes and sex abuse committed by the team in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and the Congo, still doing fine work all over the world.

Well, it pretty much sums up the fact the this so called "Peace Award" has now become a meaningless object for the extreme Left Wing.

The truth, as inconvenient as it is to Al Gore, is that his so-called documentary contained critical distortions that are quite contrary to the principles of good documentary journalism. Good documentaries should be factually correct. Clearly his documentary is not.
If the integrity of the Academy Awards is to remain intact, is wholly appropriate that Al Gore be stripped of his ‘Best Documentary' film Oscar.

Well then ohiomark, perhaps you can explain why obvious conservitives like you can continue to post on this very liberal website, and on every other liberal website that I've come across, while at the same time, every conservitive website will ban anyone that expresses a liberal viewpoint, no matter how respectively expressed? Please explain that one to me.

Who wants to place bets that he WILL run? If you had the momentum that he has now, what better way to accomplish all of your goals that you still feel you can work towards? Cheap shot all you want about his house, waistline, wife or whatever. But despite all the neocon s**t against him, he's still telling the truth. Why? Because the truth is all the neocon "scientists" are well paid hacks by the oil companies. Name one scientist who backs Gore who's in the pocket of an oil company.

I hope the next step in Gore's life is to become an ambassador to this cause by finding solutions to this problem.

Granted that Gore did a lot for Global Warming issues, but does it truly deserve a Nobel
Should this award have been given to people who bring awareness to the issue or to people who come up with solutions?

Once there was ICE and it covered much of the earth. Since much of the earth's water was tied up in ice, the ocean's were much lower than today. Many people lived at the ocean's edge, as the living was easy. Inland was colder, foggy and perhaps like an arctic desert. Both an ancient Chinese myth and the Bible speak of a time before 'rain.' Fertile areas were closer to the sea.

With the melting of the ice came unimaginable disaster. For perhaps several thousand years the climate swung between re-freezing and hotter than now. Massive floods, massive rainfalls, and worst of all, massive earthquakes as the tectonic plates popped back up as the massive weight of the ice was removed.

Of course whatever levels of civilization humankind had achieved was destroyed as the oceans rose, tidal waves swept inland, earthquakes destroyed and floods decimated.

So, to us, the world began about 6000 years ago when everything settled down, and civilization again flourished.

"A commitment to openness, truthfulness and accountability helps our country avoid many serious mistakes that we would otherwise make.

Recently, for example, we learned from just-declassified documents after almost 40 years that the Gulf of Tonkin resolution which authorized the tragic Vietnam War was actually based on false information.

And we now know that the decision by Congress to authorize the Iraq war 38 years later was also based on false information.

Now, the point is that America would have been better off knowing the truth and avoiding both of these colossal mistakes in our history. And that is the reason why following the rule of law makes us safer, not more vulnerable."

If you want to know why Gore will probably not run for president, and the great disservice the national news media did not only to Al Gore but to the United States, you should read "Going After Gore," in Vanity Fair at this address: http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2007/10/gore200710

China doesn't believe in Global warming, a lot of republicans do not believe in global warming. The biggest polluter in the world right now is China, out of 20 most polluted places in the world, China owns to 16 of them. The only way for USA to help fight global warming is to start using biofuel, hyroelectric, solar energy and wind. WE all can do this if we put our minds and heart in it. This is for the future generation.

I love it. The Global Warming discussion has now officially been taken over by the two furthest poles of opinion. The actual discussion and agreement of Global Warming and its affects are no more; it's all political. The solutions or possible remedies to this problem are non-existent because big business, God forbid, might have its bottom line affected and the CEO bonuses might only be 200 times the normal yearly salary of its workers. And so here we stagnate because the extremists on this issue on both ends must have there way and fuck the problem itself; they must be right. So, it's all about man's contribution to the problem or lack thereof instead of trying to remedy a bad situation. We can't lower man's carbon emissions says the right because that would be proving the left wrong and we must put the blame squarely on man or that would prove the right correct. In the meantime the polar ice caps melt, man and wildlife and life itself suffers and nothing gets done. Thank you folks, and my children and grandchildren thank you.

Different tribes have been blaming each other for the weather back into pre-history, although I don't recall anything as fanciful as exhaust from cars.
The Sioux thought thunderstorms were caused by another tribe hunting Quail at night. Hey you never know, wouldn't want to be a Quail-thunderstorm denier.
And hey, give those Sioux a Nobel.
RightBrainposted 05:00 pm on 10/12/2007

Indeed!
The basis of the RightBrain argument is that human knowledge, generally, is defective.

For example we saw how the Bush Administration abused knowledge and information to con America into Iraq. Useless, deceptive and very wrong information. Proof that we are still as stupid as uncivilized savages.

Except, to be more precise, you argued that non-scientific beliefs were fanciful. For example, Bush's religious convictions are just as useless as those Sioux thunderstorm beliefs you mentioned.

Climate Change knowledge is built up upon a system of information gathering and systemization that humanity has painfully gathered and criticized for the last 500 years in order to rise above the general stupidity that you refer to.

Yet incredibly, when our civilization is built entirely upon this scientific system, most Americans are derisive of science and prefer to embrace religiously based tribal stupidity and chauvinistic prejudices as a preferred source of knowledge.

Haaaaaaaaaaack...............................spit!
