Think Progress:

Today, CNN hosted "Dear Abby" author Jeanne Phillips, who recently publicly declared her support for gay rights and received the first-ever "Straight for Equality" award from Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. "I guess I just have a sense of fair play," Phillips told CNN. "I have some wonderful gay friends and I think they should be entitled to all the civil rights everyone else has."

CNN also showed Phillips a recent clip of Lynne Cheney saying that people "ought to be able to enter into the relationships they want" because it is a "free country." Phillips responded, "I never thought I'd agree with the Cheneys on anything."

If Cheney ever got tortured, he'd join John McCain in opposition. But since Conservatives lack empathy, they only care about that which affects them directly as individuals.

And since Cheney et al. will never miss a meal or worry about losing their home over medical bills, don't expect an ounce of humanity from them on those issues. Who cares about the teachings of Christ?

"CNN also showed Phillips a recent clip of Lynne Cheney saying that people "ought to be able to enter into the relationships they want" because it is a "free country.""

Any homophobe can say such claptrap. Ask her if gays should be allowed to marry and I'm sure you won't hear the word "yes."

Lynn Cheney revealed her true colors about gays back in 2004 when she accused Kerry of being a "very bad man" when he brought up the fact that they have a gay daughter. Her reaction that his mentioning of an obvious public fact was somehow "bad" just shows that she still thinks being gay is something negative.

Yep.

It is still the M-word. Something that steps beyond some people's "pale".

Marriage has SO MUCH baggage associated with it that create friction when they are rubbed (howzzat for metaphors?).

* Bride and Groom
* Bridal party
* Maid (matron) of honor
* Best man
* Bridesmaids
* Father of the bride
* White wedding (!!!)
* Wedding dress
* Tuxedos
* Trousseu
* Wedding shower
* Bachelor party
* Man and Wife
* Honeymoon
And so on...

Think of all the images these words call up that must be accounted for, shifted and modified to remove any "friction" from an Equal Marriage Ceremony.

It is not to apologize to the entrenched norms that have accreted over thousands of years. Rather, we are evolving, adapting to a world where childbearing is both no longer necessary for the survival of the "tribe," but where childbearing may actually result in the extinction of the human race through devastation of the environment. In just a very few years we will hit 7 billion (remember that we had only 1 billion people as late as 1800 CE!).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population

So.... it is not just "relationships" vs. "marriage", but how everyone conjures their images of companionship, promises, and happy forever into their participation in an Equal Marriage.

Ugh.

Yeah, I saw that interview (on the Daily Show) and she definitely did not say "yes" to gay marriage. That's because her hubby's base doesn't want to extend health benefits to gay couples. It would affect their bottom line in a negative way. Someone who would stab their own daughter in the back should not be lauded. But then, the Cheney's will never lack for health care like us peons.

Dear Abby,

I was born a pedophile. Studies (mostly my own) have shown sex to be good for children. Why are you denying me my right to marry and have sex with pre-teens?

Signed,

Ponce De Leon

Oh look, it's johnnyjustdoesntgetit - with another lame set of remarks.

First of all, Dear Abby didn't deny you or anyone else any right to marry. She didn't speak about children because anyone knows that sex with children is against the law. She, like any other halfway intelligent person (which obviously excludes you) knows that only a tiny sliver of a fraction of straight or gay individuals are pedophiles, and also knows that the vast majority of pedophiles are heterosexual.

I've always wondered how the VEEP could hold his tongue about gay rights when the Gop and the President keep leading the charge against gay rights. It seems to me, a man of character would have at some time stepped up and said "enough!" How can gay Repubs support a party that wants to deny them equal rights? It's something I'll never understand.

Get your facts right below average joe. Folsom Street Fair, the largest fair in SF attracting some 300,000 people from all over the world, is NOT a gay street fair, it is a leather and S&M fetish fair that attracts a larger heterosexual participatory crowd than a gay one. Furthermore, the image of the "Last Supper" was a flyer advertising the event. When religion is used as oppressive tool, we reserve the right to mock it. And lastly, I want the right to marry and receive its full benefits, not some right to swear an oath before some non-existant creature called god.

How can you blame gays for ridiculing religion when organized religion is responsible for much of the discrimination they face?

And what does religion have to do with governmental recognition of anyone's relationship? Last time I heard, this country does not force any religion on anyone although the right wing wackos would like to.

As to Lynn Cheney's comments... "And yea shall know them not by what they say but by what they do." Lynn CHeney may peddle all kinds of crap about how they feel about homosexual rights but it is still a fact that her husband did absolutely nothing when Bozo Bush went out front and railed for a Constitutional Ammendment against gay marriage.

Have you no honor?

old story but one that needs to be told over and over. Keep posting it!

Isn't it bizarre that being gay might eventually bring him down, but killing a million Iraqis, ahhhh, not so much.

Idiot! You should do a little research and you'd be surprised and the percentages of husband/wife couples that engage in "anal play".

it's brave of you to admit that you like your wife playing with your anus.
