Jessica Seinfeld appeared on Oprah last week to promote her cookbook "Deceptively Delicious" and one week later it is a national best-seller. Today, her husband Jerry is in the interview seat to promote his upcoming animated feature "Bee Movie," in which Oprah voices a judge. With Jessica in the front row, Oprah, walnut-sized diamonds dripping from her ears, told the audience what Jessica had sent to her instead of a note thanking her for last week's appearance. Shoes.

Jessica sent Oprah 21 pairs of shoes. From the shot that goes across the screen, the majority were Christian Louboutin kicks, which retail for $800-$1200 a pair. Just a $16,000-$20,000 thank you, from one multi-millionaire couple to their billionaire friend.

I hear that Oprah gives every day:

(1) She flips quarters out her 100th story Chicago condo and she and Gayle laugh when the dumb homeless people look up and praise JESUS! Hahahahaha! Gayle bitch gimme another refill on my champagne!

(2) When she works out at the gym, she leaves her sweaty monogrammed towels on every machine so that the little people can sell them on eBay.

(3) Every time she passes a fountain, she throws in a flawless 5 carat diamond to make a wish for her and Gayle.

Oops, I forgot to mention that she makes Gayle go fetch the diamonds in the middle of the night. Naked.

That fat bitch probably breaks off that many pairs of heels getting to the elevator every day.

... and then Oprah did her fake surprise routine and then said "woohoo", followed by "you go girl" ... and then laughed her way to the bank as her desperate/hapless audience had tears running down their collective eyes ...

this thread is making me uncomfortable. i didn't think we were allowed to criticize black - women. this is all very racist. are you saying that a black woman who crawled her way out of poverty with little more than ability to blather about banalities in a way that make middle-class white women feel good about themselves should not be allowed to enjoy a few hundred pair of shoes?

My problem isn't with Oprah...this wife of the seriously unfunny Jerry Seinfeld is a complete zero...she could buy Oprah a million shoes, I wouldn't be impressed by anything she does or anything he ever has done, is doing, or will do...both are just non-entities, propped up by fools who have the worst taste in comedians and television shows.

I too dropped "O" Magazine when the materialism became oppressively rampant! My "favorite things" consist of my friends, my family, and being able to share my gifts and talents with the world . . . and what do I know for sure? Someday Oprah will look back on all the lavish spreads in her magazine and regret that she has added greatly to the landfills and deforestation and misdirection of many a "wanna-be-rich" household budget, when instead she could have been exerting her influence for moderation in all things.

I have to wonder how many little, naked feet in South Africa could have been shod with that gift of designer shoes. . . .

I forgot to state just how sick her support of the mindless book "The Secret" was.
Oprah is COMPLETELY cut off from the reality of most people's lives.
I also despise anyone who is successful who does not believe in luck.
Luck or more accurately probability plays a role in every event. It is the apex of arrogance to discount the luck involved in any success.

I know. I actually bought the Secret.
AND my Mom bought it.
AND my boss bought it.
AND my Mom bought another one because she gave one to a friend.
AND every other person at the manicurist had bought one.

and I'm sitting there, getting a pedicure, thinking, this book is a bunch of CRAP!

I wish I had thought of it.
Oprah, I'M SURE, had to have gotten a cut.

How does she make all that money?
I bet we'd all be surprised.

Hoodwinking countless gullible women as she laughs her way to the bank. Now don't get me wrong, I have NO problem with Oprah making some serious change, but when she endorses mediocre books, initially recommends a book by a plagiarist, and then sells cars without letting those who won know they have to be pay all the incidentals on those vehicles, well, then, she is a problem.

The woman is a huge influence on many women in this country...she needs to step up, de-emphasize the materialistic stuff, and focus on the projects she has done that are great...like the Angels Network.

Rich people HAVE to give some to charity for the tax breaks...so don't let some giving of money confuse you about a rich persons true motives.

Exhibit one for why we should restore taxes on the hyper rich!

And maybe fund healthcare...

EXCISE TAXES. Can it be any clearer why our country needs to look deeper into taxing this excessive money and it's worthless use.
A reason why the governments state that excise taxes should exist is to internalize external costs. For example, the alcohol excise tax could be used to pay for the treatment of alcohol-caused diseases.
Entertainment Excise Taxes could fund PBS and do the country some real good.

This is why I do not subscribe to Oprah's magazine anymore and stopped it years ago! She is out of touch with her audience and their lives. No one is buying 21 pairs of shoes in this economy. She flaunts her wealth at her worshippers every chance she gets. Trots out her famous rich friends on her show for ratings. Is she a good person? Philanthropic? Yes, of course. Is she arrogant? Full of herself? Yes, of course.

My soul mate died in early Sept., struck by a van while crossing a street in Paris. Do you think he got to take his shoes with him? Please, Oprah. Get a life. Most of us are lucky if we can occasionally buy a pair and at a discount store, at that.. Anyway, if i had that kind of money, i wouldn't buy shoes. I'd buy anti retroviral drugs for AIDS patients in african countries or mosquito netting to prevent malaria at #1 per net (think how many nets she could buy for one pair of those pricy shoes!). Or I would help build schools. How many pairs of christian loubotin would it take to send a kid to school for a year or more in some countries in Asia and Africa?. Oprah, get off your materalistic kick and get real. Go back to your roots. You might find people are much happier with less. oh, and as i said, my partner John didn't get to take his shoes with him on that sad day in paris last month.

If this country is so racist, how come Oprah and other black celebrities and sports figures are so popular? Maybe, we just hate poor people which come in all colors.

Wouldn't it have been interesting to see what the public response would have been had Mrs. Seinfeld thanked Ms. Winfrey with a donation to one of her many charities in the same amount as the bill for the shoes? Which raises another issue here regarding Ms. Winfrey's own generosity. While she has positioned herself as a major philanthropist, one needs to consider the details of some of her more public gifts. For example, the school she started in South Africa was estimated to have cost Ms. Winfrey $40 million (by her own account). What is interesting to note is that the prime time network broadcast of the "Building a Dream" program that featured this charitable project, was produced by Ms. Winfrey's own production company and (one would assume) it was Ms. Winfrey's for-profit production company that benefitted financially from the sale of that program to ABC. Perhaps someone with detailed information can provide a total accounting of ad revenues and/or upfront sales for that special? It would be interesting to see how that number played against the overall cost of the project (which would have also benefitted Ms. Winfrey and/or her company as a tax-deductible charitible contribution). No pointing fingers here, just offering a healthy dose of cynicism here in the hopes of being proven wrong. One would like to think it's really all for the greater good.

Good post. Africa itself was dismayed ( and withdrew itself from a more public position of support ) that Oprahs school cost so much yet served so few. Her leadership academy seems designed to develop a new elite. So many non profits have been so utterly decimated by GWB administration during his tenure that there exists glaring and crucial need here within the US. I would have loved to see Oprah do more ( 40 million is chump change for Oprah and her projects benefit from tax incentives and garner the financial support of other well heeled celebrity so I am not impressed, frankly , by her largesse....Bill/Melinda Gates *are* impressive) in America. Oprah has lost her power. The magic is gone but for her well developed brand which I suppose will continue to mutate and garner revenues. What was thought to be originality by so many of us has shown itself to be strategic series of posturing. *ultimately* . I think that Oprah should hang it up and return to Santa Barbara full time.

I don't watch Oprah (not a big daytime talk fan) but I did watch her "Building a Dream" show and was very dismayed with the school.

I didn't mind the fact that it was a luxury shopping trip for Oprah and cost too much when so many more children could have benefitted but, as a mother, I was heartsick at the fact that these little girls were shipped away from home without their families. I'm sure that school requires a lot of maintenance and staff and small bungalows could have been placed on the grounds so families of the girls could work for the school and be close to their children. Instead, there was one girl who had lost both parents to aids and only had her aging grandmother left and she was taking care of the woman as much as the woman was taking care of her... Oprah comes along with this opportunity and both the girl and grandma are alone.

I couldn't help but wonder how those girls felt as they slept on 800 thread count sheets and ate 3 meals a day when they thought of how their brothers and sisters were doing. If I was eating and my 3 sisters were starving, the food would be ashes in my mouth.

I know each of the girls have a chance at a wonderful life but at what cost to their souls?

As for the shoes... well, I'll just never understand that gift *lol* I guess Seinfeld's wife has too much time and money on her hands.

The almighty "things" and the worship of materialism. Ugly! With all Oprah's supposed conscious-raising about the inequities in the world, this is rather a disgusting display by 2 people that have so much, they simply throw it away. Oprah ought to learn to practice what she preaches. She may give a lot, but it is what she can afford to give. How much does she truly sacrifice for others? I wonder.
