Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres broke down while taping her show yesterday, in an episode that airs today, over a dog named Iggy that she rescued from a shelter in September. After she spent thousands to get Iggy neutered and to try and train him to get along with her cats, it wasn't working. Meanwhile, Ellen's hairdresser has two daughters and looking for a puppy. Ellen gave them Iggy, got daily reports of how the girls loved and had bonded to Iggy, and she thought she'd done a good thing by finding the dog a loving home.

But the rescue shelter claims Ellen violated a deal by giving the animal away, and they took Iggy from the kids. "I guess I signed a piece of paper that says if I can't keep Iggy, it goes back to the rescue organization, which is not someone's home, which is not a family," Ellen told the audience.

When the shelter called Ellen to check on Iggy, she was honest and told them she'd found the dog a new home. The shelter took Iggy from the hairdresser's home.

Here is Ellen sobbing on her show for the shelter to return the dog to the kids:

This is outright stupid. We're bogged down in a war, 47 million people in America without health care coverage, education in trouble, etc..And a national celebrity is crying and whining about a dog she can't keep? Either she's emotionally unstable, an ego-maniac, or simply desperate for material--or all three. Either way, it makes me sick.

This woman is SO self-absorbed; try watching her gabfest and you'll see what I mean. How about her own line of greeting cards as proof? Plus, can't she get some wardrobe advice? I know she's a lesbian, but for crying out loud, she's got the WORST taste in clothing imaginable. Those drab man-clothes paired up with a pair of sneakers. Awful!!!

The truth is that If this would've been Paris Hilton we would all be laughing. Including Ellen. Like I mentioned, I LOVE ELLEN, but come on guys, enough nonsense

Hmmm... how 'bout if the shelter had simply scolded DeGeneres, publicized the scolding, then evaluated the new home and approved the placement?

Nahhh... no percentage in that. Who cares about the best interests of the dog and the kids, anyway. It's all about the egos of the shelter warriors who've turned into junior storm troopers. Not the first time charitable instincts have turned into bureaucratic pathology.

Yeah, they really showed everyone who's boss...

Everyone except Iggy and the little girls.

This issue is pretty basic. The shelter has rules to determine who gets the animal. Ellen signed a contract stipulating those rules. She broke them. When the shelter found out they said the new family should apply for adoption. They didn't, the dog was taken back. The rules apply to everyone but Ellen.

The rules make sense. Turn this around and assume it was an adoption of a child. Would you think a family can adopt a child, then decide it was a mistake and simply give that child to another family? Not likely. Ellen is no judge of who is suitable for adoption of a pet. If she disagreed with the terms of this shelter she should have gone elsewhere.

She has hurt this shelter & all shelters in general. People are so pro-Ellen they're losing sight of the issue. The pets' welfare is the issue and shelters are responsible for the pets they take in. They do not have special rules for Ellen & other rules for the rest. There is no reason Ellen couldn't get this family to come in & go through the adoption process unless she didn't believe they'd qualify... which opens another can of worms.

Ellen says that she is at fault but the shelter should not punish this family or the dog. Neither is being punished. The dog has been happily placed with another loving family & will go on with its life. The original family had the option of going through the adoption process and declined. The situation was resolved the way everyone but Ellen wanted it resolved. Each party had the ability to change the outcome by changing their actions. I've always liked Ellen & her show but she really dropped the ball on this one... twice. Once when she handed the dog over to the family, twice when she publicized this situation.

What's going on? Are you kidding?
Free media coverage--PUBLICITY!--for Ellen.

Just like the "drama" that gets free media coverage [PUBLICITY, stupid!] for all the other people in the so-called news. hahahahaaaa...

Ellen was stupid for not following the rules of the adoption. "Moms and Mutts" were even more stupid because they were unyielding in terms of their very restrictive rules and did NOT put the animal first. I have had FOUR shelter animals, these are dogs on a mission: they want a home, they want a pack leader...they have separation anxiety and a host of mental ills caused by humans in the first place. They don't need to settled into a home environment and be yanked away needlessly. There are many super Pet Rescues out there and super wonderful dogs needing homes. Please do not let rank amateurs like Moms and Mutts prevent YOU from adopting a shelter pet from a professional and well run Shelter operation!

A moment of silence for Ellen's confiscated dog please...................now get over it! At first I thought Ellen gave the dog to a Korean delicatessen by her reaction. Melting down on national television over a pet adoption gone awry is truly pathetic. As for the people that took back the dog. What and the hell were you thinking? Millions of animals are euthanized on a daily basis and you are reclaiming animals from homes that want to take them? Idiots. Sounds like everyone involved in this affair need some common sense.....all that is except the dog.

I don't laugh or make fun of people that show compassion. Of course, there are those that don't understand it and so there for make fun. I guess that is a way of covering up their own lack of. So to Ellen, which I adore, I feel your pain from someone who loves dogs and understands how sad you feel for the girls losing their pet after bonding with him.

When I first saw this, I was sure that an earthquake had happened or that her parents died in a car wreck. But, nope. Another upper class American citizen lost their dog. A day of emphamy, indeed.

This is just about the stupidest controversy I've ever heard of.

Just give the dog back to the little girls. I'm sure the children and the dog have already bonded. I'm all for rescuing animals but some of these animal welfare fanatics take things too far and shoot themselves in the foot. It's completely unreasonable to insist that a dog be placed only in a home with no children under fourteen. What if Ellen or Portia became pregnant (turkey baster method, of course...)? Would they be forced to have an abortion to keep the dog? Moms and Mutts (debatable as to who is who) is going to lose a lot of support after this but they've imposed their will on a rich, spoiled celebrity, and, God, we know that's what is really important, right?

I don't know what it is about some of these rescues - especially out here in California. We have encountered numerous ones where they act like you're going to take their dogs or cats home to eat or sodomize (or both).

I'm sure there are plenty of awesome ones run by logical, passionate, and loving people, but this Moms & Mutts outfit seems like one of those crazy animal hoarder places.

They should be ashamed. They really could have spun this situation to their benefit and helped more dogs than ever, but instead they're acting like jackasses. I hope they go out of business. They're obviously not in it for the right reasons or else they're so blinded by their rigid rules that they cannot see that they are ultimately hurting their cause.

Woof.
