Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres broke down while taping her show yesterday, in an episode that airs today, over a dog named Iggy that she rescued from a shelter in September. After she spent thousands to get Iggy neutered and to try and train him to get along with her cats, it wasn't working. Meanwhile, Ellen's hairdresser has two daughters and looking for a puppy. Ellen gave them Iggy, got daily reports of how the girls loved and had bonded to Iggy, and she thought she'd done a good thing by finding the dog a loving home.

But the rescue shelter claims Ellen violated a deal by giving the animal away, and they took Iggy from the kids. "I guess I signed a piece of paper that says if I can't keep Iggy, it goes back to the rescue organization, which is not someone's home, which is not a family," Ellen told the audience.

When the shelter called Ellen to check on Iggy, she was honest and told them she'd found the dog a new home. The shelter took Iggy from the hairdresser's home.

Here is Ellen sobbing on her show for the shelter to return the dog to the kids:

It sounds like this place would let Micheal Vick adopt a dog as long as he had the cash, and promised to keep owner ship until the pet died.

Nothing like driving up the cost and work by doing this. Why couldnt they just check out the new home, and if they qualified, see if they wanted to take over adoption and extort another 300 dollar bribe from the new family. Seems like that would make more sense that doing what they did.

My sis is the head of a dog rescue agency and when I heard about this, I called her to ask about process.
She also asks that if the dog doesn't fit, it be sent back so it can be placed in another home that she chooses as there's a waiting list BUT often, the adopter will call to let her know that the dog didn't work with their circumstance so they gave it to a family member. My sis will call and do a check of the home as if they were new adopters and, if it's acceptable, she happily agrees to allow the family to keep the dog.

She went to the http://www.muttsandmoms.org website today but it was no longer there so she checked it out on the wayback machine www.waybackmachine.orgg if you haven't been there) and she was dismayed to see how much emphasis is placed on donations (a $250 donation is required but more is suggested).

I can't believe the small mindedness of this organization. I also can't believe how they deceived the family by lying and saying they were only going for a home visit when they were there to take the dog.

I think the trolls want us to always focus all of our attentions on Iraq. If we focus our attention over there then we can be attacked by our own government over here. Get It? Got It? GOOD

If I wanted to control peoples thoughts and anxieties and where they focus their attention then I would do everything I could to make them think that I am exerting all kinds of energy trying to distract them, even though I'm not doing anything or much of anything really. I would just insert a few fake libs into a big group of real libs, to whisper about misdirection and what they really want us to look at and what they are trying to distract us away from, but none of it would be the real deal and so you'd have a whole bunch of people nervous and looking in as many directions as they could at once and constantly searching in the shadows and all together they would accomplish exactly, nothing...and thats all I really wanted in the first place isn't it? I'm not saying you're doing that, just rambling...

Fuck the damn dog!

There's an illegal war going on in Iraq. U.S. soldiers killed and maimed daily. Thousands of wounded U.S. vets. Hundreds of Iraqi civilians slaughtered each week. More than 3 million Iraqi refugees. Cheney pushing to do it all over in Iran.

And I'm supposed to give a crap over DeGeneres sloberring over a damn dog?

Meanwhile, the Cheney/Bush regime goose-steps the country towards establishing a proto-fascist state, using fear mongering to eviscerate fundamental civil liberties in the name of fighting the neverending "war on terror." The Cheney/Bush regimes counts on the fact that the majority of Americans could care less as long as they can watch American Idol on HDTV or shoot squirrels with semi-automatic weapons without government interference.

Stick a fork in this nation. It's over.

Obviously you don't own one...and if you do, we should sic the animal rescue people on you.

We all know about Iraq...settle down!

You may have ever had a pet. While I agree your views on Iraq, Ellen slobbered because when she agreed to rescue the dog she was expected to KEEP the dog NOT FIND IT A HOME.
SHE gave the dog a home. Why give it away? Why hadn't the hairdresser looked into rescueing an animal?
Ellen is sufferning from histrionics because SHE made a huge mistake and is now looking for sympathy. Sheesh Ellen, grow up.
By-the-way, I own 2 dogs. I would stop a bullet for either or both of them!

I have two dogs and a cat and quite frankly I have never met the PERSON I would sacrifice a one of them for. I do not understand the human mind that does not realize what a massive and great gift our pets are, nor to I care to.

Ellen should not be criticised for showing emotion. She has tried to be honest and good in her life, and has succeeded more than most people. Maybe there is more to this story than meets the eye, but maybe there are just some bureacrats who are more interested in the letter of the law than they are about the intent of the law.

I thought it was very moving that she pointed out she couldn't pretend to be "on" when this disturbing thing happened...and she took RESPONSIBILITY for not understanding contract...oooohh...someone taking the blame for their mistakes! What an ALIEN concept these days!

What we have here is a conflict between the spirit and the letter of the law. Sad thing when you get so hung up on horse shit that you kill the horse. But thats what happens when you let people get too much power and not enough humility. Personally I think if George Bush had to clean a toilet every morning things might be a little different.

This is not a "!aw". This is a conflict with the selfmade regulations of a private entity, probably to pocket another "donation"

I'm disheartened by some of the posts. Ellen has given millions to charities. You name a cause and she's there to promote it. She gives away things, and makes us laugh at a time in this country when we need all the laughter we can get. I doubt she's forgotten there's a war. In fact, she's so bighearted that she's probably all the more determined to bring us some laughter.

She was in the moment today, immediately after learning of something that she felt was her fault. I have a feeling that it is, more than anything, that these little children lost this dog. You only need to watch her to know she cares.

Let's just give her this moment. I would say that after a couple years of side-splitting laughter, we owe her a few minutes to cry. Those of us who are truly fans of this funny lady are with her on this, and hope that things will work out. Meanwhile, we just hope these people will understand that this is comedy, not news.

God bless, Ellen.

Hey, I'm with you. I get irritated with people who are animal right's activists at the expense of Human Rights but Ellen Degeneres is both, so its not offensive to me for her to care so deeply about a pet.

I remember when Matthew Shepard was killed. Ellen Degeneres went into action and was instrumental in rattling a lot of cages to attempt to get the Hate Crimes Prevention Act passed. She has worked diligently with the Human Rights Campaign for LGBT rights, so Ellen Degeneres is the BEST as far as I'm concerned.

I am not a diehard fan, but her compassion and concern for those kids and her genuine apology for her mistake was very moving. I wish some people here would lose their coldness and callousness...evidently no understanding of what a pet means to a child...did some of you not have one? Think if your pet had been taken from you...if you can't react to that, you clearly aren't capable of any emotion.

Someone at this Dog Shelter is responsible for turning a misuderstanding (Ellen's) into a cruel situation.

There was NO reason for the Shelter's management to behave this way VS talking to the the vet, Ellen and Ellen's friends, wishing to adopt the puppy.

So why did this happen?

Seriously, this may turn out to be one person's hatred of Ellen's lifestyle and sexual orientation.

It just doesn't make sense to have behaved this way for any other reason.

If the Shelter wanted more money to transfer the care of the puppy from Ellen to her friends, Ellen would have paid the extra fee.

Why did the Shelter make their high-handed and unreasonable stand?

Dave24- I'm guessing you don't have kids. They can become very attached to dogs and very quickly. Ellen was upset for upsetting the kids. It was probably very traumatic for them. I've seen kids cry over lost animals getting picked up by their owners. It really doesn't take long for them to bond. Remember? You're right, there would have been absolutely no reason for Ellen to cry for the sake of TV. That doesn't seem like her style.

Dave24- One can't always buy their way to happiness. You may not realize it, but some people actually LOVE the animals in their lives. The dog was not an object like a new toy or nifty gadget. Obviously this dog was a part of the family.

There's something about a celebrity using her status and her access to a national audience to try and circumvent the rules that rubs me the wrong way.

There's a reason that you read the fine print.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:26 PM on 10/16/2007

She's not trying to gain an advantage for herself. She's trying to help a family get back the pet they took into their home. She feels bad for the dog and the kids, not herself.

You know, I thought pets was one place that liberals and conservatives thought alike. I guess I was wrong.

Your lack of compassion for a pet that lost a home and and family that lost a pet is really shocking.
