Kissinger Finally Ponies Up For McCain
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has been friends with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger since 1973, but during the 2000 campaign, "McCain's handlers opted not to have the two appear publicly together," fearing Kissinger "would taint the image of the 'Straight Talk Express.'"
That all changed for '08, when McCain decided to openly embrace Kissinger and name him Honorary Co-Chair for his presidential campaign in New York.
Now, with McCain's campaign on the verge of bankruptcy, Kissinger is finally ponying up. Fundrace shows that Kissinger gave his first contribution of the '08 cycle this past quarter, a $4,400 donation to McCain. Kissinger's wife Nancy also gave $4,800 to McCain, which is actually beyond FEC limits.
In 2004, Kissinger gave the maximum $2,000 to President Bush's reelection campaign and another $1,000 to the Republican National Committee, Fundrace shows.
