Though they may spar across the political aisle, Vice President Dick Cheney is close enough to Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama to call him "cousin." Eighth cousin, that is.

Lynne Cheney, the vice president's wife, revealed this tantalizing bit of political trivia during a television interview Tuesday.

This apparent effort to cast dispersions on Obama via some supposed relationship with Cheney demonstates how excited the Republicans are about the opportunity to run against Hillary.

Gay marriage, flag burning, partial birth abortion and Clinton fire up the Republican base like putting out fires with gasoline.

A vote for Clinton is a shoe in for Guiliani.

His father, whom Obama met only once as a 10-year-old, was married and the father of two by the time he met Obama's mother and married her. The circumstances of their marriage " whether he was even free to wed " are sketchy, as is their divorce. One thing is clear, however, Obama's father (also named Barack) was a troubled man.


After abandoning his new wife and son to attend graduate school at Harvard, the elder Barack met another woman " also white " whom he married, fathering two more children. Obama Sr. returned to Kenya, where his new wife insisted that he give up his African bride, though he frequently paid her visits and fathered at least one, possibly two more sons (the younger son's paternity remains in question because the first wife also had taken other lovers). But this marriage didn't last either, so his father moved on to yet another woman, in a long chain of broken families that ended only with his death in a car accident when Barack was 21.

But, the point that will be missed by the Huffpoers is the kinship existing between whites and non-whites in American history. Still, today, it is far more common to see many whites acknowledge their Native American heritage, while avoiding the subject of African ancestry which was far more common and pervasive among Native Americans and blacks and among whites and blacks.

The revelation by Lynne Cheney that her husband is related to a black person is still a very highly charged and emotional subject, that many can not maturely and rationally discuss or bring themselves to acknowledge, with non-whites or among themselves. Instead of it being a window, to open up debate into the how America moved along its tragic racial divide, this subject will travel along a slew of juvenile 'off topic' remarks, designed to ignore the very real significance of who we really are as American people.

Personally, I appaud Lynne for speaking about her husband. Strom Thurmond, on the other hand, spent a 40+ year legislative record racially discriminating against non-whites as he hid the details of a black daughter he fathered in his parent's household. Only, in death did truth peel back the veil of secrecy that revealed that this icon of racism was also a hypocrite.

Lynne Cheney isn't the bad guy here, fear, loathing and hate is the continuing culprit which prevents some from moving from the typical black v. white paradigms to explore the commonalities which runs through the blood of more than 40,000,000+ whites who possess African ancestry in these United States.

To be honest: Everyone of European descent is really African under the skin anyway..and only seperated from Africa by a relatively few generations!

However, instead of talking about it (it's not politically correct to do so) and acknowledging this scientific, biological fact, it gets conveniently swept under the rug.

It's the most troubling aspect of the United States. But, instead of dealing with it bravely or "head on" to solve the problem, the discussion always gets usurped by Iraq or Al Qaeda or even Britney Spears.
