Stephen Colbert has announced his candidacy for president on "The Colbert Report," tossing his satirical hat into the ring of an already crowded race.

"I shall seek the office of the president of the United States," Colbert said Tuesday on his Comedy Central show as red, white and blue balloons fell around him.

Colbert, 43, had recently satirized the coyness of would-be presidential candidates by refusing to disclose whether he would seek the country's highest office -- a refusal that often came without any prompting.

I'd vote for him if every vote wasn't so damn important this next time around. Not that I live in South Carolina either. But just thought I'd mention it.

LOVE YOU, STEPHEN!

I'll take truthiness any way I can get it, including from a comedian. Especially when the news reporters are either forbidden to tell the truth, or afraid to.

You do realize that Colbert is doing this as a joke, don't you?

Here's what Stephen Colbert said:

"I'd let the people decide what party I belong in," he said. "I don't dictate the people's actions."

So what party should candidate Stephen Colbert belong to?

.
Cobert (a half-wit) is simply a low-brow, cheap version of Jon Stewart (a true wit). He appeals to those with the same third-grade mentality that like the buffoon Conan O'Brien, who NBC wants to replace Leno in 2009. Colbert and O'Brien reflect the continual, and now accelerating, dumbing-down of television, in particular, and US society, in general. Many are not amused.

Humor is subjective. There are those who might say that you don't find Colbert funny because you don't get the joke. They would be as wrong as you are.

Having actually seen the show now it looks like he may be serious about trying to get enough votes for one delegate. That would be really funny and be pretty harmless. Although I don't know if he can do his TV show and run at the same time. Al Franken had to stop doing his talk show when he started running for the Senate.

I think it's a sad statement of our society that so many people commenting here, and elsewhere, cannnot tell the difference between a joke and the news. Colbert is hilarious and like many stellar satirists in history, he and his writers use both realistic and humorous elements to point out the inequities and shortcomings of society. He is a comedian portraying a character, and he is good at it. He is not going to destroy the election process, hinder democracy or win. If anything he will only highlight how the "real" politicians and Powers That Are have already undermined democracy. He has demonstrated how ridiculous it is having yet another candidate show up for the same 2 parties. He went through the application process and showed the discrepancies. He mocks his character and people who take this all both too seriously and not seriously enough. It's funny cause its true.

Ditto.

The election process was already damaged by bush and rove.

These elections are a joke anyway; change is not going to be effected through electing another corporist.Look at the Congressional elections last November, it's almost ONE YEAR and the Dems have done jack. Nevermind ending the war, they can't even get medical insurance for poor kids.Pathetic.

I wish he'd run nationally not just in SC.This is one white male I'd vote for; he couldn't be worst than GWB.

Let the record reflect: Unity08 (http://www.Unity08.com) has invited Stephen Colbert on several occasions to become its presidential candidate. And since Unity08 is presently working to gain ballot access in all fifty states for its presidental and vice-presidential nominees, Colbert's presidential bid may not be as far fetched as some people might think.
It's silly, of course, and divisive, but being silly and divisive is what Unity08 is really all about.

I adore Stephen Colbert but this move was a bad miscalculation on his part.

There is nothing funny about very close elections where a phoney candidate could actually make a difference.

Also comedians entering politics -Al Franken being the exception- suggest a nihilism about politics which I haven't quite accepted yet.

Bad move Stephen- You were riding on the top of the world. Why this stupid "stunt?"

Honestly...doesn't it feel like the ENTIRE political and electoral process hads been nothing BUT a "stupid stunt" these last 7 years? A nighmarishly stupid stunt.

Colbert at least adds some levity in highlighting how ludicrous these polititcians and this particular administration are.

Nilhilism? A bit strong don't you think? In a country that elects Bedtime for Bonzo, the Terminator, Die Hard, Jim Bunning, the Love Boat, and professional football players, just to name a few, to high office?

Stephen Colbert is more interesting than John McCain, Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson, Rudy, Hillary, Edwards and Obama combined and has better positions on most issues than all of them combined.

I haven't watched Meet the Press since Tim Russert joined the bandwagon ignorning the overwhelming intelligence at the time that Saddam had no WMDs (Blix was searching wherever US intelligence told him to go and was finding nothing) and was an enemy of al Qaeda (bin Laden had publicly denounced Saddam as an "infidel" numerous times prior to our invasion) and helped cheerlead the American public, into supporting the invasion. Russert demonstrated that he has no integrity as a journalist or as a human being at the time. Nonetheless, if the rumors are true that Colbert will be on Meet the Press, I will watch it this week.

Imagine if you will, his inclusion in the debates. Whether he is serious or not, his being able say what he desires will put pressure on those who call themselves "legitimemt" candidates. They may be forced to think on their feet and answer questions with a non canned response.

Indeed.

The sad and pathetic truth is that people that watch the Daily Show and Colbert are better informed than anyone relying on commercial "media". Especially on the Daily Show where Jon has raised the level of discourse and ideas.

We couldn't have a better antidote to deal with these last 7 disastrous years of lies and criminal activity perpetrated by Republicans on us and the world.
